2006 March

Friday, pre-convention

Blargh.
I’ve had maybe four hours’ sleep in the last three days; we’re getting ready for the Emerald City Comics Convention and for some reason this has been the hardest year yet. Trying to get parents and kids coordinated and make sure they’ve all got rides to and from the exhibition hall and get their passes […]

And Then One Day - Passionately Publishing Comics

Ryan Claytor rose to the challenge I set out to all you mini-comic creators out there, and sent me #2-4 of his autobiographical series, And Then One Day. And I’m glad he did, as And Then One Day made for a very engaging, fun read. Although, missing #1, I was totally lost as to what […]

Cronin Theory of Comics - It Is a Lot Harder To Move From Another Media To Comics Than Is Given Credit

I did a bit on this in 2004 before I started doing the “Theory of Comics” shtick, so I thought it would be nice to rewrite it as a “Theory of Comics” bit. In any event, , I believe that, if you’re a good writer, you’re just a good writer, no matter what the genre […]

Friday in the Shooter Gallery

  • by Greg Hatcher
  • Saturday, March 25th, 2006 at 12:04 PM EST

Going to be a short one this week, because we are rapidly closing in on the Emerald City Comic-Con up here in Seattle, which means that I am frantically trying to get enough of my students’ giveaway ashcan zines printed to get us through the show weekend. Thankfully, I have some connections in the printing […]

Robotika #2 - Taking a Comic Seriously

Whether one enjoys the work that Alex Sheikman is doing on Robotika, I think that one would have to admire how seriously he is taking the comic, and the execution of the comic. In #1, one of the problems that I had with the book (and I know a few other people had the same […]

This Comic Is Good - Graphic Classics: Rafael Sabatini

  • by Brian Cronin
  • Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006 at 2:55 PM EST

Graphic Classics has now done more than a dozen comic collections adapting the works of great writers, and each one has been highly entertaining and quite affordable ($12) for the amount of story contained in each volume. Their most recent entry, devoted to the work of Rafael Sabatini, is no exception to this trend.

Bad Friday

  • by Greg Hatcher
  • Saturday, March 18th, 2006 at 12:03 PM EST

It’s been a cranky and unpleasant week here in the Hatcher household, all things considered. Some of this crankiness is comics-related; some is not. In an effort to alleviate at least the comics-related part of it, I’m going to snarl about it and you all get to listen. Amazingly, I didn’t plan this with Greg […]

Cronin Theory of Comics - Last Page Turns Should Be Used Fairly

I don’t mind surprises in comics. I don’t mind “twists” either. One thing that I do dislike, and what I think should be avoided in comics is the use of the last page turn “shocker,” where the last page exists strictly to shock you, not to service the story.
These “shockers,” which often get referred to […]

Friday in various Batcaves

  • by Greg Hatcher
  • Saturday, March 11th, 2006 at 11:43 AM EST

So I’m reading all over the internet, including here, how generally pleased everyone is with the new, one-year-later issue of Detective, and how it represents a nice reboot/kickstart/clean slate for Batman, what a fine jumping-on point it is, and so on and so on. I hasten to add, I thought all those things too, it […]
