Dark, super-depressing Batman? It must be Comics You Should Own!

I was on the fence about including David Lapham’s recent 12-part “City of Crime” as Comics You Should Own, even though I liked it. Then I re-read the series in one sitting, and it blew me away. Excellent, excellent stuff. So therefore, it’s the subject of my latest column. Read if you like!

This is coming out in collected form next week, so I can’t read your article until then for fear of being spoiled. I personally think it’d be better times to do this piece next week to coincide with the release.

I don’t make the schedule, T.! I knew it was coming out soon, but I didn’t know it was so close. I guess my overlords didn’t check the schedule either, or they might have saved it until after it came out!

No prob, I’ll just read it next week. I just don’t want to be spoiled, but I’m sure it’s good.

Now you got me wondering about this, I stopped reading it part way through. So I will hold off on your post too.

Nice piece. City of Crime really is one of the more unsettling Batman stories I’ve ever read, and one of the more compelling versions of the character I’ve seen.

It’s been awhile since I read this and I never read it all together, but I remember reading the Narrator as being Gotham herself. I don’t know if this is completely off, but it made the insight into Batman all the more creepy for me.
Great review! You brought up several important themes I didn’t notice before. I’ll have to pull this back out when I have the time.

This really was phenomenal. Too bad the run was slapped across the face by the unwanted break that was “”War Crimes”.

I know it’s been a while since you wrote this, but I just read the collected book and, desperately looking for some analysis and insight on City of Crime, eventually found this. And I’m too lazy to register for popcultureshock’s forums.
It’s a great analysis! I was also confused on some of the plot points, especially towards the end, and this helped clear it up for me considerably. Like others said here, the whole story was truly disturbing. I shouldn’t have been as surprised as I was, considering I’ve read a couple issues of Stray Bullets, but damn. City of Crime starts off a bit unrefined, but by the end it definitely redeemed itself and more.
Thanks for writing this. I’ve started to look at some of your other columns in this series too (wow, someone else remembers Dark Knight, Dark City).
