I was very interested in Oni's project with The Colbert Report.

Also, Amanda Conner's books will be worth looking into.

And I was excited to see that Jeff Smith's Captain Marvel book will come out next year. Finally!

And it's fuschia.

Failing that, the new Mike Carey ongoing sounds pretty good.

From what I understand from Rodriguez interviews, Miller pretty much was always in the set during Sin City and Rodriguez would ask him questions all the time so the movie would come as close as possible to what Miller wanted. But he did very little actual directing in it, more like a producer that supervises the director work very close.

I can't care to the Superman II news either. I like it a lot the way it is and I think it's far better than #1 (and that probably has to do with Donbner being fired). Anyway the film will probably go to be 2/3 Lester to be 2/3 Donner so its still not the one Donner wanted to make.

Loeb has left lost too, AND series creator Abrams is returning, so that show should become good again as well. It went from having a ton of Emmy nominations in its first season to having zero after its second season.

Oh yeah, Greg, those bits of news WERE certainly interesting as well, and I probably should have included the Superman II restoration (I think the Stardust one wasn't "new," but I could be wrong), which was neat, especially the sorta odd sounding "new" scene made out of a screen test by Reeve.

And Donner/Johns, while "announced" at SDCC, was first reported, like, seventeen years ago, it seems...hehe.

But yeah, giving him a co-writer was a great idea, I think. He also got the best Kubert brother!

Huh. Once again my age is showing. I glanced over CBR's news coverage and the items I was so pleased to read that I printed them out to show Julie were:

--The panel about the Neil Gaiman Stardust movie.

--The Superman II restoration. I am really jazzed for that; it's why we don't own that movie yet. I'm holding out for the restored version and I was delighted to read how MUCH restoration they are doing; I had thought they were just cutting the deleted scenes back in, like the first one's enhanced edition. But this really is a true restoration to what it was GOING to be before Richard Lester was brought in.

Now, maybe those things weren't technically roll-outs but they were news to us and we were very pleased to read about them. I'm kind of interested in the Johns/Donner Superman comic, too... although, God knows, Kevin Smith and Brad Meltzer should have shown by now that success elsewhere doesn't really translate to good superhero comics. At least DC is smart enough to give Donner a co-writer.

I think Miller doing the Spirit is the best news, not because Miller is great or anything (he's actually pretty hit-or-miss) but rather because it means Jeph Loeb isn't involved anymore.

Agreed, if he’s writing it, I’d be a bit wary. Although, to be fair, I do believe Robocop II and III were heavily changed from Miller’s original story.
i seem to remember reading somewhere that ROBOCOPs 2&3 were written by Miller as ROBOCOP 2, only fragmented and stretched to make two movies.

1. Miller might do a decent job as director. We’ll have to wait and see. I’ve never really cared about The Spirit so I’m not likely to be offended by a shitty adaptation. The real trick is will Miller be doing any of the writing. Forget about All Star Batman, has anyone else seen Robocop 2 and 3? I’d rather read Dark Knight Strikes Again everday for a month than sit through Robocop 3 again.

2. The fact that they adapted Miller’s work scene for scene is what made Sin City such a great movie in my opinion. That, and a handful of genuinely great actors going balls out over the top with Miller’s shit dialogue. It’s amazing how much I enjoy listening to Mickey Rourke doing Marv’s interior monologue considering how much I hate reading it.

I thought there was some very nice acting, and the movie looked great, but I just thought it translated it so well, it made me question the NEED for a translation. That being said, if you dug Sin City, then odds are pretty good you'll dig The Spirit.

3. Not that they should but why can’t they do Eisner’s Spirit scene for scene?

The Spirit stories were so short and not necessarily connected I don't think it'd be a viable option for a movie, where Sin City had complete stories to adapt, and even THAT managed to fit three in one movie.

4. This is just semi-related trivia but, ever seen the Michael Jackson video for Smooth Criminal? Crap song, but I swear that club they’re dancing in was lifted directly from the pages of The Spirit.

Ha! I can see that!

Frank Miller co-directed Sin City, so my presumption is that he will approach the Spirit with the same style that he used with Rodriguez on Sin City, the big difference being is that what I found to be the biggest problem with Sin City was that it literally just adapted Miller's work scene for scene - and I do not think that will be the case for the Spirit, because, well, you really can't do that for the Spirit.

Personally, I'm looking forward to Oni's My Name Is Earl book, as well as Adam Warren coming back with Empowered for Dark Horse. I might be the only person with at least three sketches based on his characters from Livewires, so I'm definately excited.

Well, that and the mention of "The Excellent Super-Bat" to which I'm thinking... "wait... Super-Batman?? Is that a play on Super-Batman?"
