Judging (Marvel’s November) Books By Their Covers
Marvel’s November Solicitations are up, so let’s make some prejudgements based just on the covers (as we all love to make prejudgements, don’t we?)!
Let’s begin!
___________________________________________________
Let’s just get it out of the way.
This cover looks bad.

Onslaught Reborn? Stillborn is more like it.
Moving on! As that was too easy, and overly mean, so I feel ashamed. Better to get that out of the way early, though! Onward and upward!
___________________________________________________
This Pasqual Ferry Ultimate Fantastic Four cover reminds me of the OMAC stupid robot things. Therefore, it is inherently a bad cover.

Sorry, Mr. Ferry!! Don’t blame me, blame sense memory!!
___________________________________________________
Holy crap. Mr. Land, if you cannot find an actor or model who looks like Hyperion, please note in the future that it is acceptable for you to create a face on your own, rather than just using a model/actor who does not look like Hyperion at all.

Just trying to help.
___________________________________________________
This Ultimate Vision cover begs the question…

With all the nostalgia comics, why no Tron comic!??!
___________________________________________________
Weird perspectives/poses on this Ben Oliver Ultimate X-Men cover.

I like him, though, while I’m not thrilled with this particular cover.
___________________________________________________
I love the layout on this Ron Frenz Spider-Girl cover.

Very professional.
___________________________________________________
If there’s something strange in your friendly neighborhood…
Who ya gonna call?

Pretty decent Scot Eaton cover for Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
Has there been a new regular artist named for this book yet?
___________________________________________________
This is a weird Clayton Crain cover for Sensational Spider-Man.

I honestly don’t know what to say. So I open it up to you folks – think of a funny joke about this cover. The funniest joke gets a cool point!
___________________________________________________
What I particularly like about this Takeshi Miyazawa cover is the boldness of willing to have the beginnings of MIDTOWN HIGH without explaining what the letters mean.

In addition, Miyazawa does a good job of capturing the reaction of MJ and Harry to hearing that they’re considered the school’s two biggest flirts.
___________________________________________________
Pretty fun Spider-Man/Power Pack cover.

Gurihiru is occasionally a bit TOO cartoony for my tastes, though.
___________________________________________________
This Skottie Young cover looks like it wasn’t quite finished.

I do like the design, though. A perfect fit for an anthology.
___________________________________________________
Well drawn Wieringo cover for A-Next #1…

even if the majority of the characters on the cover are hideous.
___________________________________________________
Not a bad Jo Chen cover for Runaways, but not the most engaging of covers…

___________________________________________________
Did the Leader switch places with Stan Lee again?

Damn, that’s a big noggin.
___________________________________________________
I didn’t know Heroclix was a contact sport!

___________________________________________________
A nice drawing for Lopresti for the What If..? special involving Avengers Disassembled (and, by the way, this idea for all the What If…? one-shots is a LOT cooler than the last set of one-shots, which were pretty lame).

My only concern is that, like Michael Ryan’s art on New Excalibur, it seems a bit light for the dark nature of the story.
___________________________________________________
What if… the Other wasn’t awful?

___________________________________________________
CIVIL WAR COVERS!!!
___________________________________________________
I’d like to see Iron Man just let Cap get his followthrough from that cover – {CLANG!!}

___________________________________________________
Wow…until seeing this cover, I didn’t realize that pretty much all the black superheroes are on Cap’s side.

That’s kinda odd, no?
___________________________________________________
Okay, so either Drax has become giant-sized, Nova has shrunk or this Gabriele Dell’Otto Annihilaton cover doesn’t make sense.

I hope it’s A or B, but it seems like it’s C.
___________________________________________________
I loves me some Phil Hester, but I can’t say I enjoyed this cover.

I mean, is there an explosion? Fire? What is going on?
___________________________________________________
GREAT cover idea by Scott Kolins for this Beyond! cover.

I can’t say I’m thrilled with execution of the idea, but the IDEA is brilliant.
___________________________________________________
It’s impossible for Dave Johnson to draw a BAD cover, but I can’t say that I’m particularly impressed with this Earth’s Mightiest Heroes 2 cover.

Although I love the cover design (with the giant letter)! Very nice change from the first series.
___________________________________________________
Is that Panther armor on this Black Panther cover?

___________________________________________________
Marko Djurdjevic is a very talented artist.

I can’t say, though, that I’m particularly impressed with the design on this Blade cover.
___________________________________________________
Pretty good Lee Bermejo cover for Daredevil.

___________________________________________________
I absolutely lurve Marco Martin, but this Dr. Strange cover leaves me a little cold.

I don’t think the little artistic flourishes around the characters helps the cover. In fact, I think it detracts from my enjoyment of the cover.
___________________________________________________
Wow, this Rick Berry cover for the Eternals includes an odd artistic choice.

Having the background be so cloudy…just an odd decision.
___________________________________________________
It is rare to see a cover like this.
In the foreground, we have one of the loveliest depictions of the Fantastic Four that you will see, by the uber-talented Alan Davis.
Then, in the background, we have one of the dorkiest looking Doombot (I guess it is a Doombot, right?) you will ever see, by the same uber-talented Alan Davis.
A tale of two parts of a cover!

___________________________________________________
Cute Franklin Richards cover.

___________________________________________________
I’m a bit disappointed in this Mark Texeria Ghost Rider cover.

The demon bikers after Ghost Rider barely look menacing at all. In addition, you can barely tell that they are all apparently going very fast.
Weird.
___________________________________________________
Daniel Aja is a great artist, but this Iron Fist cover seems a bit too much like a poor Sam Kieth drawing.

___________________________________________________
That is one creepy looking Heroes for Hire cover.
Yee-ikes, that’s some…ahem…interesting anatomical choices.

___________________________________________________
Is this just a bad Sal Buscema cover, or were the 80s really this hideous?

I’m leaning towards the latter option.
___________________________________________________
Alex Maleev’s Scarlet Witch certainly isn’t BAD, but I think a bit too stylistic.

___________________________________________________
Very striking Gabreile Dell’Otto cover for Fantastic Four 1602.

___________________________________________________
This David Finch cover for Moon Knight is quite striking. The bright colors of Spider-Man’s costume compared to the white garb of Moon Knight make for a nice contrast.

___________________________________________________
I put a lot of faith into David Mack’s stylistic choices, as he’s a brilliant artist.
However, I think this White Tiger cover could have had a more interesting cover layout.

___________________________________________________
Not the most appealing of Squadron Supreme covers by Mike Deodato.

___________________________________________________
I am sure this Walter Geovani cover would hold more appeal for me if I had any idea what Demons of Mercy was about.

Since I don’t, though, this cover is pretty blah looking.
___________________________________________________
Mark Brooks’ art seems a bit too bright to pull off the seriousness that this Cable/Deadpool cover is meant to convey.

___________________________________________________
This “Exiles disguised as members of the Shi’Ar Imperial Guard” cover by Paul Pelletier is a new candidate for “dorkiest cover imaginable”!

___________________________________________________
Pretty decent Paco Medina cover for New X-Men.

Suitable creepy, even with the cartonish feel to it.
___________________________________________________
Good cover idea by Michael Ryan for this New Excalibur cover.

The Juggernaut’s helmet breaking is a very nice hook.
___________________________________________________
I normally enjoy John Watson’s work, so seeing such a poor Uncanny X-Men cover by him really disappoints me.

But man, how unrealistic does THIS cover look? No one’s movements seem natural at all!
___________________________________________________
Wouldn’t Wolverine be a lot cooler if he was just a walking skeleton?

___________________________________________________
I am torn on this Ariel Olivetti Wolverine: Origins cover…

On the one hand, the fight on the cover is both engaging and well structured. On the other hand, the looseness of Olivetti’s “no inks” cover art gives it a weird feeling to me.
___________________________________________________
Pablo Raimondi joins the book as regular artist, which is happy news – sadly, though, he is keeping the stupid giant wolf head for Rahne.

Are there any FANS of the stupid giant wolf head for Rahne out there?
Let me know! Why do you like it?
___________________________________________________
This Marko Djurdjevic cover for X-Men: First Class, I think, is not all that engaging, as far as covers go.

Marvel NEEDS to get him working on a project with interiors, though! He’s a fine, fine artist.
___________________________________________________
Clever idea for this Phoenix cover.

Silvestri’s execution, though, is a bit weird.
___________________________________________________
Nice Arthur Suydum cover for Hellstorm, but didn’t we JUST see this homage at Marvel? Next week’s She-Hulk, I think. Let’s mix things up a bit, folks!!

___________________________________________________
Decent enough Kyle Hotz Zombie cover.

___________________________________________________
Pete Wisdom looks pretty cool on this Wisdom #1 cover by Trevor Hairsine.

___________________________________________________
This Sean Chen cover for Marvel Adventures: Avengers seems a bit stiff with the character work.

___________________________________________________
Wow, even Marvel Adventures: Spider-Man has a black costume, now? Yikes.

Nice Patrick Scherberger drawing of it, though!
___________________________________________________
Nice film poster feel to this Criminal cover by the great Sean Phillips.

___________________________________________________
Interesting composition by Jack Kirby on this cover.

The characters, themselves, though, don’t look that appealing, which you have to wonder how it will affect enjoyment of the posthumous series Jack Kirby’s Galactic Bounty Hunters.
___________________________________________________
Pretty boring looking Powers cover by Michael Avon Oeming.

Also, I don’t like solicits that pride themselves on showing you gross scenes you couldn’t see in other comics. Seems like an odd selling point.
___________________________________________________
HONORABLE MENTIONS!
___________________________________________________
This Ladronn Hulk cover is good, but the characters seem overly stiff to be ranked higher (I loves me some Ladronn cover art).

___________________________________________________
I found this Mark Bagley cover for Ultimate Spider-Man to be quite strong.

A classic, yet engaging cover. A good example of “cliched – because it WORKS.”
___________________________________________________
Tommy Lee Edwards had been blowing me away with his Daredevil cover images, so I was highly disappointed by only having a pretty strong opening cover for Bullet Points.

The cover is still engaging enough to deserve special notice.
___________________________________________________
Computer coloring effects really help Mike Wieringo’s cover art POP on this Ms. Marvel cover.

His design work helps, as well, as he lays out a very intriguing cover here.
___________________________________________________
I like Michael Perkins’ artwork, and this cover has a nice idea…

however, his characters seem way too stiff. Some of them don’t even seem to be acknowledging the break in the glass in the center of the comic, which is weird.
___________________________________________________
This Chris Bachalo cover is completely madcap, but not without sacrificing detail and logic.

___________________________________________________
This was the CLOSEST call – between this one and #5. I almost copped out and had a tie.
Here is, as drawn by Kano for Marvel Adventures: Fantastic Four – Sue Storm, Secret Agent!!

FLYING CARS!! They are always awesome! Not awesome, enough, however, for the…
___________________________________________________
TOP FIVE COVERS!
___________________________________________________
5. Nextwave JUST edges out Marvel Adventures: Fantastic Four.

A big plus, mentioned by my pal Jake, is the way that everything on the Nextwave cover is a part of the cover, including the logo – the logo is a real piece of the artwork.
That helps push Stuart Immonen’s cover to the top five (on top of, of course, an engaging layout and great character depictions).
___________________________________________________
4. This cover shows why Tim Bradstreet should not do colorform covers.

When he actually draws, we get awesome looking covers like this one!
___________________________________________________
3. This Tomm Coker cover for Agents of Atlas is bizarre, but extremely compelling.

The cover layout is interesting, and Coker draws the animals and Venus (is that Venus? Aha, apparently, it’s Namora) quite well.
___________________________________________________
2. I continue to be amazed at how great of an artist C.P. Smith is nowadays.
This Punisher X-Mas Special is yet another example of it.

Extremely stylized without taking away from coherence – it’s a real accomplishment of Smith’s artwork.
___________________________________________________
1. This John Cassaday Astonishing X-Men cover is just way too much fun not to have at #1.

___________________________________________________
Okay, that’s it for me, folks!
Feel free to share YOUR prejudices (and YOUR top five)!!

The animals on that Agents of Atlas cover are photshopped photgraphs, no? Also, surprisingly obvious use of the Plastic Wrap filter on that Sue Storm cover…
By the way, I LOVE the Judging Books by Their Covers feature!!

Ya think so? I think he may have photoshopped them after he drew them (to make duplicates), but they look drawn to me – but it’s close, so I certainly allow that you may be correct!
And thanks!

The woman on the Agents of A.T.L.A.S. cover is Namora, Namorita’s mom.
And there WAS a Tron comic last year, btw.
T.
August 24, 2006 at 4:22 am
With all the nostalgia comics, why no Tron comic!??!
Slave Labor Graphics did announce one in 2006:
http://www.slavelabor.com/nf_tron.html
It was supposed to come out in April 2006, don’t know if it ever did.

Oops, Typo Lad beat me to it. (Except it was this year, not last year).

On that Bradstreet cover, it looks like the Punisher’s getting attacked by a helicopter three feet long.

But freaky eyeball floating where the head should be, anything can be saved with a freaky floating eyeball.

The fellow on the ANNIHILATION cover isn’t Drax. It’s a plus-sized new villain named “Ravenous” who first appeared in the SILVER SURFER mini-series.
kelvingreen
August 24, 2006 at 7:07 am
Yeah, he’s right. It’s Ravenous (awful name, by the by), not Drax.
Ack. Liefeld. Why in the name of all that’s good and holy do Marvel (and DC, but mostly Marvel) continue to employ him? Ack.
And Onslaught? Dear god. Are Marvel still publishing this shite as a charity book for the Sam Loeb Fund? Sick.
Hey, I don’t know why people complain about Greg Land’s photoreferencing. I mean, it’s not like he’s clearly used the same model for both Sue Storm and Hyprion’s blonde friend or anything. No siree.
I actually really like the Spidey/Power Pack cover. When do we get that cool, fun, version of Spidey back?
A-Next? Again? And another Avengers spinoff while the main title is still being impersonated (badly) by Skrulls/Bendis. Tsk.
Earth’s Mightiest Heroes 2? Again? And another Avengers spinoff while the main title is still being impersonated (badly) by Skrulls/Bendis. Tsk. Didn’t they use the big letter motif on the first series too?
The Heroes for Hire all seem to have the same, slighly shocked, face. Interesting.
Oh gosh, why won’t they let 1602 die? I’m not his biggest fan, but it was Gaiman that made it work. Doing it again without him is an idiotic decision, akin to launching a second Avengers title for all the fans who don’t like Bendis, then assigning Bendis to write it. Oh wait…
Hey, the running guy on the Squadron Supreme cover looks like Triathlon. Is that delibrate?
Wouldn’t Wolverine be a lot cooler if he was just a walking skeleton?
Bad Brian! That’s mid-90’s thinking. Which means there’s probably a Skeletal Wolverine series in the works…
A Pete Wisdom solo series? Who’s writing that? Please, not Daniel Way…

You can just hear HERBIE saying, “Well, here’s another fine mess you’ve gotten us into.”
As for Rhane’s wolf head, I don’t have a problem with it. Maybe it’s just because I have no particular attachment to any of her past character designs, but I see nothing wrong with it.
James
August 24, 2006 at 7:58 am
The “giant wolf head” Rahne appeared at least once before, in the (incredibly lame) Xtinction Agenda storyline circa 1991 (her powers were amplified through anger, thanks to Bruce Banner correspondence lessons, I guess). So there is a minor precedent for it. But, yeah, count me up for a “lame” vote.

Paul Cornell, a wonderful writer of Doctor Who and other TV work, is doing the Wisdom series.
I hated the Daredevil cover. What the hell is up with the costume? It’s this sort of weird revisioning that bugs me about Simone Bianchi’s covers to Detective (Batman having a mask that has almost no correlation to the one inside the issue or indeed the entirety of DC’s output for the past 66 years aside from bat ears).

I’m sorry, but that Franklin Richards cover was the best one of the month. Too funny. The Ultimate Vision cover looked pretty sharp as well, I’m surprised it wasn’t an honourable mention.

August 24, 2006 at 10:08 am
I like the Dr. Strange cover.
The Astonishing one is undeserving of #1, man.
When I first saw the Exiles cover, it didn’t register with me what was going on until I saw Morph there. Probably because I have no idea who any of the Shi’Ar *are* besides Guardian.

If you like some Djurdjevic, take a look at the gallery here: http://www.degenesis.de/data_galerie1.html
They’re for a German RPG, he did most of the interiors, layout and art directing. You can get the complete rulebook as a PDF under Downloads on that page.
(The forum has an English section: http://www.degenesis.de/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=14&sid=b08b418629d9140a21eeee4c312a9cfe in case you want to find out more about the game. Apparently an English version is in the works but not ready yet.

The Franklin Richards cover needs to be higher. Herbie’s expression, the pilgrim hats, the deadpan turkeys with goggles- beautiful.

Speaking of covers–I don’t recall you talking about this cover a few months ago: Did anyone else see the HORRIBLE cover design for the “Kraven’s Last Hunt” hardcover that came out this week. It looks like a temp cover designed for some kind of dull instructional manual. It is the worst cover design I have ever seen on something so expensive. Here’s a link to the image:

It’s the cover to Amazing 295 set into a tasteful, bookstore-quality design. What, are you pissed because there are no boobs and explosions?

August 24, 2006 at 1:58 pm
Damn, Marvel has some truly hideous covers this month. The Wolverine:Origin and Uncanny X-Men covers look they should be painted on the side of someone’s van.
I think the Punisher cover looks even more like a colorform than any of Bradstreet’s past efforts. The helicopter appears to be in the distant background, but Frank’s shooting directly above him. There’s no sense of perspective or depth. It really does look like two unrelated images slapped onto the same page.

“Interesting composition by Jack Kirby on this cover…The characters, themselves, though, don’t look that appealing, which you have to wonder how it will affect enjoyment of the posthumous series Jack Kirby’s Galactic Bounty Hunters.”
It isn’t a “posthumous” series because it isn’t work by Jack Kirby. And unlike the first issue, the layout doesn’t look like a Kirby layout at all…whatever the cover credit may claim.

Re: Kraven HC cover
That’s the variant cover, made to please the fanboys who want something to match their collection of Marvel Masterworks. The regular cover is actually an awesome design, featuring the classic Zeck image of Spider-Man in his black costume digging himself out of his grave, digitally painted by Richard Isanove.

Maybe I’ve just been out of the X-Men for too long, but I can only identify about three characters on that Bachalo cover.
And who’s that guy in the Morrison uniform on the Astonishing cover? You know, the one who looks like a normal guy.
I love the Dr. Strange cover. I can’t believe I like something with Night Nurse. But, yeah, I think the effects and everything are perfect for a Dr. Strange book.

Oh yeah, and Jeph Loeb’s a prick for guilting people into buying Onslaught stuff by Liefeld.

– Considering that she’s supposed to be an FBI agent turned reluctant superhero, it’s amazing that the new(er) White Tiger managed to lose 15 pounds from her Maleev depiction, slap on nothing-to-the-imagination spandex, and adopt a supermodelish pose in time for her cover.
— John Watson’s cover for Uncanny appears to have been modeled by G.I. Joe figures.
— Criminal looks better every time I see it.
— Lee Bermejo’s cover for Daredevil rocks, especially when you notice how he rendered Tombstone’s hair. Remember, the character’s meant to be an African-American with freaky pigmentation.
— Sensational Spider-Man: Apparently Clayton Crain forced perspective until it broke.
— Nice use of radial symmetry on Cassaday’s cover.
— I Ultimate Sue breastfeeding her brother on that Pasqual Ferry cover?

Anyone else think that Ulimate Vision’s hip is cocked in a weird way?
Also, first thing I thought when I saw that Land cover was that the Squadron Supreme must have gotten an alternate Sue or her twin on their team…or, you know, he needs more than one model for his generic blonde super-heroines.

The recent Tron comic is based after 2.0 though, that doesn’t count
Is the girl (looks awfully young for MJ) on the Sensational cover being rescued by Spider-man or attempting to molest him…. looks like it could go either way.
That Deomons of Mercy image would’ve been pretty cool if that were Godzilla there.
I like the Dr. Strange cover too, could use a bit more psychedelic colors but otherwise it’s a good image.
The Agents of Atlas cover probably rates as my fave just on the basis of it being the one that held my attention for the longest.

There WILL be an Image one. They just have the misfortune of releasing their solicits the same day DC does and a day before Marvel – so many covers, so little time.
Dark Horse, though – do they even HAVE enough covers for it to be worthwhile? I’m willing to give it a shot.

Apodaca, the “normal guy” on the Astonishing cover is Cyclops. He no longer rocks the visor.
As for Adjectiveless, the core team depicted is comprised of Iceman (fingers), Cannonball (falling), Rogue (pulling hair or the victim of poor foreshortening), Sabretooth (in chains), and Mystique (shooting a gun of some ilk). Cable’s also on the team, but he didn’t make the cover. Lady Mastermind, the blonde daughter of Mastermind, is getting her hair pulled (maybe…?) by Rogue. Karima Shapandar, Neal Shaara’s ex-girlfriend-turned-Omega Sentinel, is the brunette with the white gauntlets, pulling back for a punch. Both are members of the title’s supporting cast. The other characters are the villains of the piece, The Children.
And, I’m surprised no one mentioned the return of the classic costume on the Spider-Man covers.

Loeb can of course use his own work to raise funds for his son’s very worthy charity. More power to him.
But there’s something sick about using a shitty Onslaught book with shitty Liefeld art which no one would buy if it weren’t for the charity connection, when Loeb is also going to be writing Ultimates 3 and a hhigh-profile spidey title/arc.
Think of the money and goodwill Marvel could generate by donating the proceeds from Ultimates 3 #1 instead of guilting fans with this Onslaugt filth.

Wow – great month for the ladeez
Top Five
5 Astonishing X-Men – dramatic, unusual and highly effective
4 Agents of Atlas – fantastically executed
3 Ultimate Vision – now, I’ll be honest – I wouldn’t have thought I would found a female android sexy but, hoo boy, this cover certainly kicked my prejudices into touch
2 Phoenix Warsong – the Cuckoos are so creepy and I love the zombies here
1 Heroes for Hire – I don’t find this creepy, Billy Tucci has rendered the women strong, sassy and sexy and with distinctive and different body-types as opposed to the usual mandatory double Ds.
