When Superman was “killed”, he was replaced by several different faux-Supermen.

When Punisher was “killed”, he was replaced by several different faux-Punishers. I know “Suicide Run” isn’t well regarded, but there’s some stuff in there I love.

And now there’s a bunch of Beetles running around, though I don’t think he’s dead.

Frank Castle is not the first Punisher, there was a Galactus robot…

Johnny Storm is not the first Human Torch, there was an android…

Lois Lane was not the first “Superman’s Girlfriend”, that was Lana Lang.

Can’t be famous firsts– the Beetle’s first appearance was in a Human Torch story; Spidey and the Human Torch had teamed up previously (and more than once) in Spidey’s own title.

But I have no clue myself what the connecting factor is.

I’d say the connection with the covers is the framing devices.

Lois Lane has action going on behind the ripped out panel (so it’s action with-in the action).
The Punisher has Spiderman in his sights (so it’s action with-in the action).
The Beetle is peering around a wall to an unaware Spidey and Human Torch fighting (so it’s action with-in the action).

The cover homage seems to be to Amazing Spider-Man #38, the last Steve Ditko issue, which usede the same “side insets” bit. Of course, the reason it did that is because Steve had quit the book without drawing the cover, so Stan and Sol Brodsky had to use other art and inside panels to “create” a Ditko cover instead.

I don't have any good guesses for the three covers (until I saw the Spidey one I was going to guess that each cover had a multi-plane point of view) but I just gotta comment: look at the gorgeous coloring on the cover of Spider-Man #21. Sublimely beautiful and beautifully sublime. Keep your Alec Ross and your Gregs Horn and Land; this is the kind of painted art that I love. Whoops, was that kinda snarky for snark-free corner? And I reject your two bat-dance choices. Only Vibe can win such a contest.

The only problem is that the Punisher isn’t a guest star in that appearance. It’s his debut, and he appears as a villain (who eventually switches to Spidey’s side, if I remember correctly).

All of the covers also feature a superhero as a guest star, in these cases Superman, the Punisher, and the Human Torch. They also each feature the names of all those guest star characters written out in little side boxes (is there an official name of them?), and not as part of the cover’s logo. Heck those little boxes also help summarize the plot!!

And Dick Grayson wins because there has to be some way he could use his circus background for any kind of dancing.

All three covers have the number 12 on them. The Superman and Second Spider-Man both cost twelve cents and the first Spider-Man cover is number 129 or “12″9
