X-Men #190 was so good it gave me chills.

Now, I admit that any comic featuring my boy Northstar is a comic I will willingly spend money on no matter how crap it is, but I don't suspend my critical faculties just because he's in there. I bought X-Men #190 with a trembling hand, terrified that Carey and Bachalo wouldn't be able to keep up the standards they'd set for themselves -- but they did, praise be to God, and I was most pleased. (They even had Northstar meet with Victor! SO AWESOME!)

FYI, the whole Man-Wolf/Star-God thing is from a mid-70s solo run in Creatures on the Loose, which was concluded a couple years later in Marvel Premiere. The brief recap in She-Hulk pretty much tells you what you need to know. I have fond childhood memories of those issues, as wacky as they are.

I'm 99% sure that X-factor cover is the 1st part of a tryptich.

I'm sure that squid thing shows up sometime in the next 2 issues.

Maybe.

Re: Action, I'll admit, Nightwing having basic confidence and simply not getting punked is about as good as it can get for the character it seems, so I'm satisfied for now. I'll take what I can get. Hopefully the next step is winning a fight.

This issue of All-Star Superman was quite possibly the best comic I've read this whole year. I absolutely loved it - Morrison and Quitely have a pretty much perfect take on both Lex and Clark, and after buying the Showcase Superman/Superman Family trades recently, I feel like I appreciate the mood Morrison's creating even more than before. I remain amazed at the way this series has issues that are (essentially) self-contained, while still cramming in tons of tiny-but-fulfilling details - the eyebrow pencil bit, Clark pounding his foot to create the "earthquake", saving Lex from electrocution/gunshot, and so on. Like someone said, it *is* possible Morrison can screw things up in the end - but if the series maintains this consistency, it's going to be a simply amazing run. And probably my favorite Superman story ever.

re: All-Star Lex: Looking back at #1, he seems moderately skinny in most of both issues; he only seems bulked-up when he's actually lifting weights (which I took to be a standard cartoony "stress the musculature in a weight-lifting scene" approach) and during his trial (which seems to be a quirk of Quitely's related to men wearing suits). On the whole, though, he's a generally skinny Luthor. Compare him to Quitely's much-beefier Earth 2 Luthor, for example.

Also, Frank Quitely's Parasite is amazing. I'm never going to be anything but disappointed in the look of the "real" Parasite.

re: Action: On another T.-related note, this comic has probably the coolest Nightwing I've seen in years. T. will point out that isn't saying much, but still.

G'nort's hiding at Marvel because he's worried what might happen to him in the Guy Gardner mini.

Nobody tell Chaykin.

All Star Lex was indeed awesome. I did not expect him to completely steal the show like he did, though Clark certainly did some cool stuff too.

T., yeah there has been a definite change in Luthor's physique since issue #1, but the head-on facial features are relatively the same when you compare the similar expressions on the 3rd to last page of issue #1 ("Before I do something terrible to Superman") with the 3rd to last page of #5 (Luthor's "I killed Superman" panel).

Again, I chalk up some of the differences to the circumstances Luthor is living under in each issue. In #1, I get the impression he's isolating himself in a lab and focusing all his attention on developing new technology, leading to a more gaunt appearance, while in #5, he's been focusing on bettering himself physically as well given the limited facilities for invention present at the prison, leading to a more physically imposing appearance.

Kirkman's Ultimate X-Men is very good indeed. I haven't read the annual yet, but the main book has been trucking along for sometime with good twists, excellent use of the whole cast, and a nice continuation of storylines from across the book's life. It's really very underrated. Astonishing gets more attention, but Ultimate is the stronger title. Wish it had a more consistent art team...

T., in regards to the change in Luthor's physique between issues #1 and #5, I'm assuming Luthor looks "beefier" due to the weight lifting he does in the prison gym.

Another thing: I don't have any problem waiting for an excellent comic when the creative team and the publisher are honest up front about it. ASS was never supposed to be anything more than bi-monthly, as far as I know. It's something like Promethea's schedule, and I'll happily wait an extra month for J.H. Williams' artwork. (It's much harder to stomach when we're waiting many months, like for Seven Soldiers. But oh well.)

Quitely's fine design sense on that two-page spread, recalling a bit of Chris Ware as Lex and Clark walk down the prison steps — well, that's just gorgeous. Bravo gentlemen. Yes I'll wait for that.

(Plus: While the All-Star Superman issues have an ongoing arc in the background, they're still basically done-in-ones. Unlike, say, Whedon's much more tightly wound Astonishing X-Men, which really suffers from being bimonthly.)

"Clark looks so pathetic in some of the panels (which, of course, he’s trying to be) and Quitely does a wonderful job of making him a completely separate person than Superman. I’m still not buying the disguise, but Quitely is one of those rare artists ... "

Which is EXACTLY why I DO buy it, finally. For the first time in, probably, ever. I LOVED this issue (particularly because I love the way Morrison writes Lex, and his All-Star Lex (as an evil-genius scientist) is even more delectable than his DCU Lex (as an evil-strategist mogul)). and the longer their encounter continued and Lex didn't connect the dots, the more I began to appreciate this aspect of Kal-El. He doesn't need some silly 1980s Byrnesque excuse for people not recognizing him; he just ACTS, and nobody figures it out because he's that good. (It's like -- I dunno -- seeing "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" years ago and being stunned afterward to learn that Leonardo DiCaprio isn't retarded in real life.)

The distinction Grant and Frank make between Superman and Clark is so much fun, so simple but so brilliantly done. I was even thinking about it again this morning as I made my breakfast. They're taking something suggested by pitch-perfect performance of Christopher Reeve in the first two films (and to some degree, also by Brandon Routh's decent job on Clark, though both were a bit too handsome -- they needed worse hair and thicker glasses or something), and they're really playing it up. Quietly nails it the best, "acting" through his pencils.

If Morrison doesn't blow it at the end, this run is going to stand up as one of comicdom's all-time best.

“Clark looks so pathetic in some of the panels (which, of course, he’s trying to be) and Quitely does a wonderful job of making him a completely separate person than Superman. I’m still not buying the disguise, but Quitely is one of those rare artists … ”

Which is EXACTLY why I DO buy it, finally. For the first time in, probably, ever. I LOVED this issue (particularly because I love the way Morrison writes Lex, and his All-Star Lex (as an evil-genius scientist) is even more delectable than his DCU Lex (as an evil-strategist mogul)). and the longer their encounter continued and Lex didn’t connect the dots, the more I began to appreciate this aspect of Kal-El. He doesn’t need some silly 1980s Byrnesque excuse for people not recognizing him; he just ACTS, and nobody figures it out because he’s that good. (It’s like — I dunno — seeing “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” years ago and being stunned afterward to learn that Leonardo DiCaprio isn’t retarded in real life.)

I'm just joking, T. - I know you have an issue with Miller's handling of Daredevil rather than what he did with him. And I can't remember how Lex looked - I'll have to go back and check it out. Someone with a better memory will have to field that one!

Keeper of the Fortress - I just don't know about that. I wonder if it was intentionally humorous. If it was, it's a strange place to put it, especially coming on the heels of a guy getting sliced up by throwing stars. It didn't really piss me off, like it did Bryan, and I don't have anything against ninjas in the same way I don't have anything against the Joker - I just wish writers wouldn't use them as much.

What the heck happened to my covers? They weren't that big earlier!!!!

I read All-Star Superman in the store and put it on the rack. After skimming it I got the gist of it and it didn't feel worth the money or the wait. But I was just curious, is it just me or is Quitely drawing Luthor much different than issue #1? I seem to remember Luthor being rail thin and looking similar to a younger Cassandra Nova in that issue. Now he seems beefier and Yul Brennerish in this book.

I had the exact same reaction as you when the ninjas showed up in DD. I couldn't believe I was expected to take it seriously at all. All the great feelings I had about the book during the first 5 issues of Brubaker's run have disappeared with the last two issues.
