For Jim K: you’re recalling JUMBO COMIC BOOK, which wasnt marketed as a coloring book – but was probably sold alongside Waldman’s other coloring books. It reprinted Star’s Frisky Animals, which themselves reprinted Novelty’s Frisky Fables, which themselves were produced for Novelty (Saturday Evening Post company) by Jason Comic Art.

I actually remember having the issue that cover image was originally from …. it came in one of those 3 packs you could buy at K-Mart along with an issue of Spider-Ham and He-Man (or Thundercats, one of those..).

Showcase Presents: He-Man*, now that’d I’d buy!

*It would have to be a showcase volume, it’d be the only way you could get the Superman team-up issues in it.

Well, they did put out Essential Godzilla, which they had to re-license and charge a little extra in order to publish.

I wouldn’t mind if they did the same for ROM, too.

The funniest thing is that if they could get them into the bookstore market in the children’s section, these would be the best selling Essentials volumes ever. Especially since the paper used and the open black and white drawings would be perfect for small children to color.

I’ve since lost it, but I once found a 300 or so page “coloring book” at Kmart (this is back in the late 70s) that was simply Israel Waldman reprinting old funny animal comic books once again. But instead of selling it as comics, it was sold as a coloring book. Lots of good AGC, Standard and St. John’s funny animal stuff, with no licensed characters, of course.

Being a Howard Post fan, I admit to having these issues already – so I dont know if i would buy an essentials. but would Marvel even consider doing material they dont own?
