Top Five Funniest Jughead Cover Gags

This week’s top five is based on the cover gags of my favorite Archie Comic, the spinoff comic starring his pal, Jughead. The topic? What I thought were the Top Five Funniest Jughead Cover Gags! I went through about two hundred covers to pick these five, so you better like them!

Enoy!

Honorable Mention – Jughead #33 (Vol. 2)

This cover really isn’t all that FUNNY, but damned if it isn’t one of the more interesting covers that you’re ever going to see!

5. Jughead #132 (Vol. 1)

The first two are quite pun-derful (and oddly enough, back-to-back issues). I really liked the usage of the Archie superhero characters in the cover. What’s intriguing about Jughead is that the covers often hit patches of “themes.” For instance, a stretch of covers might all feature monsters. Here was a stretch that mostly featured superheros.

4. Jughead #131 (Vol. 1)

I love this one because it makes NO sense, except as a joke.

Just totally out of nowhere.

3. Archie’s Pal, Jughead #137 (Vol. 2)

I like the nice, amusing nod to Jughead’s status as the king of eating. It is a nice way of showing how renowned he is for eating.

2. Archie’s Pal, Jughead #87 (Vol. 1)

While the previous cover shows how renowned Jughead’s eating talents are, this one shows how freaky they can be!

I love the dialogue from Archie – it really gets across the dismay at Jughead’s actions!

1. Archie’s Pal, Jughead #66 (Vol. 1)

Jughead is two things – an eater and a girl-hater. We’ve seen the eating jokes, now here’s my favorite girl-hating gag from the covers.

Very amusing stuff – and it’s one of the few gags that works even withOUT the characters. That could be ANY girl-hating dude and the joke still works.

Agree? Disagree? Let me know!

Technically, it already is “ANY girl-hating dude.”

It’s a very old joke. (Still a good one, though.)

Who’s the skirt anyways? Thats not Betty, is it?

That’s an Owen Fitzgerald cover to Jughead #66, right? Love his work.

Isi t that he hates girls, or that they just rank lower on his priorities than food?

Is it that he hates girls, or that they just rank lower on his priorities than food?

He hates girls.

They even tried mixing it up a bit during the late 80s/early 90s, by having him date girls – they ended up dropping the bit.

Once during atrip I slammed on the brakes, jumped out and grabbed something from the street. I jumped back in & my wife asked what was up. I showed her a fork that I found in the road & said “That guy said that when we come to a fork in the road, we should take it.”

It took two weeks for the swelling in my jaw to go down.

Absolutely love the Jughead/ice cream joke.

But Jughead didn’t hate girls in the sense of being a misogynist — he had no trouble being friends with women — it was just that dating and romance and that sort of stuff held no interest whatsoever for him. And I do remember at least one comic where he met a girl who was an expert cook, so he was certainly keen on her…come to think of it, I’d be very surprised if they didn’t use that plot more than once.

Okay, so Betty’s left hand is conspicuously hidden from view by that rather strategically placed plate of fruit, and that look on her face is pretty devious, so I can’t help but think that if the good Ms. Cooper had tried this technique earlier, she’d have snatched Archie away from Veronica years ago!

Oh definitely, RAB.

Jughead isn’t a misogynist. He just USES the phrase “girl-hater” to describe his disinterest in dating.

Interesting how Jughead can have a disinterest in girls and dating and it’s treated as totally innocent. What if Judd Winick worked at Archie? How long before we realized Jughead’s disinterest for girls was just a mask for his repressed homosexuality? That could make for a good story,

Agreed, T.

I think that’s a really nice aspect about the Archie Comics, in that they can have stuff like that happen without taking it too seriously.

I’d really like to see a Jughead/Betty miniseries.

Also good pics. The blogsphere needs more Jughead related content.

Oh, man, T… the thought of Winick writing Archie blew my mind.

But no, I don’t want Jughead to be revealed as homosexual and beaten up.

I dunno – if Betty was “hinting” like that … with THAT look … I think I’d change my mind very quickly! :)

I ran across a couple of those “Jughead’s a ladies’ man” comics, and they were sure creepy. The strangest thing was that it was right in the middle of regular comics, and so you’d see jughead hating girls and then suddenly…cool jughead with a pack of girls chasing him around, going out on dates or something. It was creepy enough that I expected it to be explained as some alien invading Jughead’s body. But I never read any explaining it at all.

I did read a funny one where Jughead kept having dreams where he was kissing Betty and Veronica and then his dreams came to life. Of course, it was all revealed to be a joke they were playing on him. With friends like those, though…
