Next Wave is pretty good at delivering the funny, but am I the only one who primarily reads it for the fight scenes? Holy crap, they're amazing, just on a whole other level in terms of spectacle, impact, and visual appeal and than any action scenes I've seen in ten years of off-and-on comic reading.

I was losing interest in Nextwave for a little bit, there. It just wasn't making me laugh. But I decided to give it one last chance--

--and I'm glad I did. From the Mindless Ones doing a West Side Story routine down the street to Aaron's line about Tabby having muck shot all over her, it was solid, funny, quality. And I believe I'm beginning to fall in love with Stuart Immomen. And Elsie Bloodstone.

"apart from the bizarre plotline about how the “aristocrats” and rich people of London got the tip-off to evacuate calmly and secretly, while the evil government left all the “common people” to die in terrorist explosions."

it was going so well until you got to that bit, then it all fell apart :(

Regarding "Wetworks"

Since I am a big Wildstorm nerd, it falls to me to tell you that the team that appeared in the first issue of Wetworks was not the original team. The original team was mostly killed off in the earlier series. Only Jackson Dana and Mother One survived. The rest are new members.

Adam! - Yeah, I read it, but in the store. So I get the experience without paying the money for it!

Mike - I'll probably wait a few years until she knows more about what she's doing and let her choose some comics. Right now she just likes the bright covers, and she was chewing on the Ewoks book (or more accurately, chewing on the bag it was in). Next year, more than likely, I'll start getting her things she can understand better. That's a good idea about Krypto, though - I'll have to keep it in mind.

Your blog is great. You should, however, be buying up the issues of "Krypto" for your 15-month-old daughter to enjoy some day -- or even to read to her as bedtime stories now! :-) That will cement her, ahem, "descent into comic-book nerdishness" (your words, not mine ).

My five-year-old son and I have a lot of fun with Krypto on TV, and I expect we will with the comic books, too. I am saddened to hear that, apparently, Cartoon Network is cancelling the show . . . so any support you can drump up for the Dog of Steel would be greatly appreciated!

Union Jack was pretty good at avoiding all the stuff that might irk an actual British reader - unless you happen to be a Brit but not English and get a bit shirty about the England = Britain thing, but even that was at a total minimum in this - apart from the bizarre plotline about how the "aristocrats" and rich people of London got the tip-off to evacuate calmly and secretly, while the evil government left all the "common people" to die in terrorist explosions.
WTF? I know we have a class tension hangover in this country, and Union Jack being a working class hero with a chip on his shoulder is kinda interesting, but that whole "aristocrats" thing (who says that anymore?) was just bizarre and seemed not thematically British to me at all.

And is there some secret 'rich person' grapevine that the governemnt has to all the posh hotels?

Not to mention most of the current rich and governmental people in Brit society come from pretty "common" stock.

Anyway. Fun issue apart from that weirdness.

Not reading Union Jack on principle - the principle that, assuming its set in England, they feel the need to stick him in a terrible union jack costume (groan)....and then CALL the title union jack, just to drive home the message that yep, this guy is from the UK alright. What's wrong with all-black spandex? Or a big red flappy cape? No, all our heroes have to look stupid. We don't all run around in England waving flags everywhere. Oh, and "God, not again" bonus points if he talks like Dick Van Dyke.

Bah.

I believe the Giant Gorilla at the end of this month's Catwoman is infact The Gorilla Boss of Gotham... a silver age villian who was a mobster who turned himself into a Gorilla for reasons I can't quite recall.

Right. Because no one in the history of superhero comics has been killed off only to pop up years later in some unknown country alive and mostly well. Rick Flag is such a pioneer like that!

That's why there are editors, Dan. Don't blame Rucka - someone should have mentioned that Rick Flag is dead. He may have known and said "screw it," but someone needs to stop him. Remember editors? They were cool.

Every time I think Rucka can't jump another shark, he does the Fonz proud.

Sigh. Hi, I'm Greg. If you're going to call me bitter, at least write, "Jesus, is Greg bitter much?" Isn't that friendlier?

Could you be more specific, though? Bitter about what? I didn't buy Civil War, so I'm not bitter about that - I don't really care about it. I'm not bitter about the books I bought - sure, I have some criticisms of them, but for the most part, they were fine. If some of them don't get better I'll drop them, but I won't be bitter about it - I'll just say goodbye and that will be that. I'm certainly not saying I CAN'T be bitter - I'm pretty good at it when I want to be - but how I am bitter in this post? Because I point out why you might enjoy these books more than Civil War? I would submit that any one of these books, viewed objectively and not through the lens of "Wow, Iron Man is fighting Captain America - how cool is that?", is better than Civil War. Okay, maybe not Wetworks. But the others are!!!!

Come on, you can give me specifics! I want to know how I'm bitter!

" ... 52, which is in the same category as Civil War, no?…"

I don't really think it's fair to lump 52 into the same category as the crossover quagmires better known as Infinite Crisis or Civil War. As proof, I humbly offer ...

The Top Five reasons why 52 is NOT like Civil War:

1. It actually comes out ON TIME. Every week.

2. Some issues have been "meh," but I'd say their batting average is .750.
I wouldn't say Civil War's had three compelling issues out of the entire four they've published so far.

3. While other DC titles might make you feel like you need to read 52, it seems to me 52's main plotlines are pretty self-contained. Meaning, I don't have to read Superman or JLA or Teen Titans to follow what's happening here with Clark Kent and Booster Gold and Wonder Girl.

4. 52 features Animal Man and the Question. Civil War features Iron Man and Captain America. Oftentimes, the C-list is way more interesting, and this is no exception.

*** MINOR SPOILER ***

5. The recent twist ending in 52 (involving Skeets) is BY FAR a better cliffhanger than any of the endings to the individual Civil War chapters so far.

Just sayin'.
