I actually liked the recent Batman issue more than the prior two. That whole sequence with The Spook and his henchmen was a great throw-away bit, even more so after I realized he was a Scooby Doo bad-guy (that green ghost illusionist that could walk through walls). Would've been funnier, in a dark comedy sort of way, if the head had been more recognizable (Oh no! Freddy!).

That’s not a good cover. I’m just sayin’.

You'd THINK that'd be obvious, but some dude on IGN put that pretty high in his Top 50 Marvel Covers of the entire freaking YEAR!!

What the hell?!?!

It was done, in an issue of What If…?

I did say someone talented. Couldn't have been done very well if it was just one issue of What If? that nobody really remembers.

If Wolverine’s 100 years old, or whatever, doesn’t it make sense that he might use antiquated slang?

I think Wolverine should talk like a nineteenth century prospector, all "ought-six" and "consarnit" and "I'll be jiggered"!

Not to defend the X-writing AT ALL, but Wolverine (and other "tough-guys") has been calling women "frails" for years.

Mostly during Claremont's eras.

It was weird and hackneyed then and it's worse so now.

I'm really digging Carey's X-Men. He does a great job of balancing the big things with the little things, while grounded it all in the canon.

I'd much rather Cable NOT be running around with a gun, because really, he doesn't do that much anymore, but whatever. Actually, they need to deal with some of Cable's own book in X-Men at some point. I know Carey included him because he's a fan of what Fabe did with C/D.

They need a quiet issue or what not after this arc is over.

Still, I think Carey might be doing the best job out of the Whedon/Brubaker/Carey Trio. He just balances things a little better while still hitting the little lines and character moments.

I agree with you totally on Lapham's Batman, Greg. It had its flaws, but bleakness wasn't one of them... Lapham was one of the few writers since Miller to pull off the grim'n'gritty well enough to make it a strength. This was a dark comic, but it was damn good dark comics, and it was still a uniquely 'Batman' story. And best of all, the excessive darkness enabled Robin to actually serve his purpose of lightening the mood occasionally... the way Lapham worked Tim into every issue of a gruesome, twelve part murder mystery/conspiracy was pretty damn impressive.

Not so sure about your critique of Morrison's Batman-- introducing a son would seem to be a pretty big deal, and this latest issue rewarded repeat reading, IMO. And the idea that there are actually people saying, "oh, it's a different-looking Spider-man, I'll buy something else then" seems pretty far-fetched given Civil War's sales figures. I do love Slott, though, so I can't really disagree with anything that pimps his work instead of the more hyped crossovers!

Marvel's not quite as mean as you think, though... She-Hulk was given a new #1 issue to boost sales, and 'Civil War' led to a She-Hulk tie-in getting a second printing, like a good tentpole crossover should. Besides, wouldn't promoting She-Hulk heavily go totally against the common (and monumentally stupid, IMO) refrain that continuity is killing comics and putting off new readers?

"I’d like to see someone (talented) do a story where mutants are actually evolving into another species - a species with specific, defined, consistent traits, instead of this silly setup where individual powers change from one person to another. This would be cool for a couple reasons: First, you could play around with the evolution concept, which really hasn’t gotten much play except for some limited experimentation during the Morrison run. Second, the shoe would be on the other foot, with mutants being the dead-end species destined to become the outmoded precursors for the new guys. And then you could have Magneto, with his paranoid “race war” shtick, show up to exterminate the new species, demonstrating that his “I’m just trying to survive” routine makes him every bit the genocidal butcher he’s always claimed he’s not. Hop to it, X-writers!"

Tricia - yes, Lapham's Batman was very bleak, but the version of the character, and the arc, work well. At least that's my opinion. Bleak doesn't necessarily mean bad, any more than happy and sunny mean good.

Oh, and it should be patently obvious by now that Grant Morrison is not a better anything than Alan Moore, as desperately as he wants us to believe this.

It's worth Carey trying the "species that comes after mutants" thing, because when Claremont did "the Neo" it was stupid and insensible.

Not that "the Children" look like they're going to make much more sense than "the Neo" did, of course.
"The Secret Origin of the Children of the Vault is revealed in this issue, and while it’s nothing all that special, it certainly works as a story and makes the characters somewhat sympathetic. The problem with this, as the problem with so much of comic book stuff these days, is that it’s been done before, and will probably be forgotten as quickly. Claremont had those “post-humans” not long ago, and nobody even remembers them anymore. How long will it take for Marvel to forget these characters?"

At least Carey got around to explaining his mysterious super-race. I'm still not sure even Claremont knew what the deal with the Neo was.

I don't really want to spoil it, Dan. It's not that earth-shattering, but it does put a lot of Marvel history in an interesting new light. If someone else wants to give away the goods, be my guest! Or, if nobody minds, I'll come back later and ruin it.

T. - yes, you're the only one. How lonely for you!

Am I the only who didn't like Batman and the Monster Men? I bought the trade based on all the raves and found it really dull.

I am not authorized to view either Va, va, va, or voom.

What was the retcon in She-Hulk? I can't buy it, because I'm boycotting Horn-dog covers, and I don't think it's that funny. But I am curious about things!
