I should add, it's not like you really showered it with praise or anything, but you've really got me wanting to read 'Ultimate X-Men' now, and maybe even 'Uncanny'.

Sorry, but honestly, anyone who read the "good racists" line and actually thought it could be construed as Greg praising racists is a moron. There's editing, and there's giving 'tips' to other bloggers, and then there's just patronising ridiculousness. The review was fine as it was, Greg, but I figure you already know that.

Oooh a Scarlet Traces story that I didn't know about!

I hope they put it in a funky (and cheap) little hardcover like they did with the GN!

Definitely agree on the editing recommendation. Anything you put more energy into than a post-it note should be reread before giving it to the world.

Dude, first "gooks", then "good racists"? I love you man, but take the time to read your column before you publish it, okay? Obviously, you meant no harm either time, but seriously, just a smidgen more self-editing could help you out. I reread my own posts (at Spot's World regularly, sometimes even three or four times! And I often make numerous edits within minutes of my first posting. It works! And, it has the fringe benefits of making your language usage stronger, allowing you to fix misspellings and typos, and it makes your syntax better too!
Say that you'll try, okay?
I'm sure we'd all like to avoid another flame war like last week's (fun as it may have been to read).

"People who are good at being racists," perhaps? It's still a despicable thing.

I don't mean to imply that you can't have good superhero stories without the melodrama. When the X-Men are really good, though, the writer strikes a balance between the soap opera stuff of the weird incestuous family the X-Men are and the action they get involved in. That's what makes the X-Men great, but it doesn't necessarily work for other books. I don't really want melodrama in the Justice League, for instance. They should be all about the ass-kicking.

Greg said, "Typical soap opera stuff, really. Like I said, nice, simple superhero stories."

I don't think the two are really analogous. Nextwave, for instance, tells perfect, simple superhero stories. No soap opera stuff, whatsoever. Also, I hate soap operas. You can have superhero fun without constant melodrama.

And "Good racists in Arizona hate Hispanics, not black people."

Good racists, Greg? You might want to re-think your phrasing...

I must cop to actually being a Cable fan - though only when Nicieza writes him, because the character actually has an interesting personality and goals.

That said, the last page of this month's Ultimate X-Men struck me as a pretty great reimagining.

I was tempted to get "Uncanny" just because I like the mix of characters on the team. It appears that I shall, in fact, be Waiting For The Trade (TM).

Just like talking gorillas and Skrulls, jokes about "Plan 9 from Outer Space" will always be cool. Uncanny has managed to land two of three, though at times I swear that Warpath isn't much more than a gorilla. Add Bru to the mix, and you have a comic that makes me happy. This arc has been really up-and-down for me, but I really, really liked this issue and the reasons are pretty much along the same lines as yours, so I won't get into it.

I picked up "Ultimate X-Men" for the first time with this issue and, I admit, I should have read the 70+ issues that came on my $1.99 disc that came with X-Men 3 before jumping in here. Having only read the first arc, I was a little lost with the status quo, but I still enjoyed it nonetheless. Also, the twist on who Cable is was pretty awesome and the exact reason why something like the Ultimate Universe can be fun. Screw the rules and continuity of the 616, let's just grab characters and fundamentally change them in new and interesting ways. I totally dig it.

Sometimes, I think to myself that there is no possible way that I can love Fables anymore than I already do and that there is no possible way they can do anything new to keep me entertained. Then, over and over and over again, Willingham proves me wrong. This issue was the bee's knees my friend.
