Actually It wouldn't be that hard to retcon. It was all made up Osborn to mess up Peter, the kids are clones made with some left over Jackal stuff. I mean Osborn has made a clone before...

You know, the reaction to this story was the basis for my thesis in college.

I don't want this retconned. Was it a good story? No. It only exists to make more goblin characters and have something shocking to get people talking. However, was it a bad idea? Not necessarily. It represents a very real change in Peter's life, and that should not be taken lightly. So it really chaps my ass that a bunch of people would rather live on a cave on Mars with their finger in their ears and eyes closed just because Gwen Stacey is some sort of saint.

Apodaca said …
"Well, at least they didn’t try to hide the fact that he’s an ugly old man.
Eeeewww. "

Of course not. That was part of the point.

For those of you who want to ret-con this (and I laugh at how JMS went out of his way to make it hard for another writer to do that) how would you do it?

Would "he mind-cotrolled Gwen" be enough? Would it have to be "it as an elaborate plot and he made up the whole thing, and mind implanted the thought into Gwen's brain, and MJ's brain, and made kids with Gwen's DNA"?
I think adding to it would just make it even more of a mess.

It is. Here's the gridiron footballer STEVE VAN BUREN; a fine example of real-life version Osborn hair. You see gangsters with this sort of hair in old movies.

It's curly hair, combed back with lots of Brylcreem or lard or some sort of miscellaneous filth. But like so many things, over time it has become refined as a graphic element into this finely-plowed, if somewhat abstract barnet.

I always figured that, despite later artistic interpretations, Osborn-hair was just Steve Ditko's extremely stylized take on short-but-wavy hair on guys.

I'd be fairly interested...not for any sexual reason deviant or otherwise; but merely to answer the question which even Reed Richards must ponder, when he's not becoming more and more like his Venture brothers parody-self:

'Does Norman Osborn's bizarre hair ever get messed up?'

Nope come rain or shine, ball busting combat with Spidey or ball bursting sex with Gwen Stacey the man's freakish hair remains 'preserved'.

What is his hair anyways? Short Corn-rows? Are white people allowed to have that sort of hair?

Ever seen Woody Allen's 'Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex (But Were Too Afraid To Ask)'?

There's a scene where Gene Wilder is a doctor, and a patient tells him he is in love with a sheep.
There's a brilliant shot, which feels like it goes forever, where upon hearing of the man's love for the sheep, Wilder's character is trying to not have a reaction, and so looks everywhere except at the man. It's very funny, but very naturalistic - looks exactly like someone who doesn't know what to do or say next.

I imagine the artist had that look on his face when he saw he had to draw that panel.
