Judging (DC's January) Books By Their Covers
DC's January Solicitations are up, so now is as good a time as any for us to make prejudgements based just on the covers (as we all love to make prejudgements, don't we?).
Let's begin!
___________________________________________________
Very nice design work from Dave Johnson.
Then again, you knew that as soon as you saw the "Dave Johnson" part, didn't you?

___________________________________________________
Ah...the post-Infinite Crisis DCUniverse...so much brighter and cheerier.
By the by, this 52 cover by JG Jones seems a bit more like standard comic art than normal, as his stuff is usually more like painted art.
___________________________________________________
Am I wrong, or does it seem like Adam Kubert works with his father a lot more than his brother Andy?
And it's funny, but Joe always dominates it when they work together, like this Action Comics Annual cover (by the by, they're doing an incentive cover for an ANNUAL? Isn't that weird?).
___________________________________________________
Not a bad drawing by Joshua Middleton for this American Virgin cover, but not all that gripping, either.

___________________________________________________
Very nice Ladrönn cover for All-New Atom.

___________________________________________________
HOLY CRAP!!
I don't blame Christopher Jones for this hideous Robin for this Batman Strikes cover (as he obviously just drew what they told him to), but seriously, who the hell thought that this was a good idea?

He looks like Beavis!
___________________________________________________
Andy Kuhn is working old school on this Blue Beetle cover. Has a real Silver Age vibe to it.
If only Blue Beetle's costume wasn't so ugly.
I have noticed something - my favorite Blue Beetle covers are when his costume is not a big part of the cover (the Phantom Stranger cover, that cover where his costume is acting like the Venom symbiote).
___________________________________________________
Not a bad Whilce Portacio cover for Batman Confidential, but not too good, either.

___________________________________________________
This is just a shot from inside the comic, right?
Why don't they tell us this in the solicits (not cover of Batman, but shot from inside the comic)?
___________________________________________________
Words fail to descibe how silly this Batman: Greatest Stories Ever Told Volume 2 cover by Alex Ross is.
The ONE saving grace is as follows...
Take the cover for Volume 1.
Then flip back and forth from Volume 1 to Volume 2, and you can make it look like Batman is doing a funky dance.
___________________________________________________
Another neat Stephane Roux cover for Birds of Prey.

___________________________________________________
Very nice cover design by Matthew I. Jenkins for this Cartoon Network Action Pack cover.
The cover motif is good, and the way it works in the other characters is top notch.
___________________________________________________
I'm less impressed with this Robert Pope cover for Cartoon Network Block Party.

Not an interesting design, and the characters aren't fit into the cover very well.
___________________________________________________
Pretty good Derec Donovan cover for the Connor Hawke mini-series.
That isn't Shado, is it?
That would be creepy.
___________________________________________________
Not feeling this Justiniano cover for Creeper.

___________________________________________________
The fact that Adam Hughes has done so many great recent covers really makes this disappointing cover stick out even more so.
It's not a BAD drawing, by any means.
It just is pretty bland.
___________________________________________________
This Deadman cover is more intriguing, but ultimately, not THAT intriguing.

___________________________________________________
You know what comics need more of?
Violence against women.
There's just not enough of it.
That being said, that IS a pretty striking cover by Carlos D'Anda.
___________________________________________________
I was sooooooo impressed with the first, like, TEN DMZ covers, but I haven't been impressed with many as of late.

___________________________________________________
Simone Bianchi does a decent job on this Detective Comics cover.

___________________________________________________
This whole "Arch-nemesis being a little kid" thing isn't getting any less creepier by the issue.

___________________________________________________
If he hasn't already, Ryan Sook needs to be hired by the film industry.
He has really nice design sense, as seen on this Friday the Thirteenth cover.
___________________________________________________
So, what the heck was the deal with that whole Jason as Nightwing thing?
So weird.
Not a very good Scott McDaniel cover.
Maybe if I didn't hate Brick so much...
___________________________________________________
For this Gen13 cover, Grunge should say, "Want to see my swamp thing?"

___________________________________________________
I've never seen anyone use their shirt to carry their volleyballs!
Hawkgirl, you are an innovator!!

___________________________________________________
Interesting contribution by Phil Winslade to the Helmet of Fate month....although, doesn't this sorta spoil a plot point of 52?

___________________________________________________
I am seriously creeped out that POWER BOY, of all characters, seems to be getting a bit of a push by DC.
Best Kalman Andrasofszky Ion cover yet.
___________________________________________________
Nice drawing by James Jean for this Jack of Fables cover, but it's unclear as to the point of the image.

___________________________________________________
Man, they're just BURNING through JLA Classifieds, aren't they?
First, the end to Chaykin's arc (nice cover by Plunkett).

___________________________________________________
then the beginning of Jurgens' arc!

Nice to see Jurgens return to the one good part of his JLA run - Doctor Destiny.
By the way, thanks for turning my issue of JLA Secret Files into a LIAR, DC!!!
___________________________________________________
This Ty Templeton Justice League Unlimited cover must be the most straightforward cover ever.

___________________________________________________
Decent Jordi Bernet Jonah Hex cover.

___________________________________________________
Good lord, are we back to the "Alex Ross draws a somber cover featuring a member of the team" routine for JSA AGAIN?

___________________________________________________
VERY nice Scott Jeralds cover for Krypto.
I heard it was cancelled (the TV show). Is that true?
___________________________________________________
Pretty cool Phil Winslade cover, and with Christos Gage writing it, you'd hope Deadshot would be treated well (and without the dorky costume!).
Sad to see Legends of the Dark Knight go, though.
Only THREE ongoing titles! That's the fewest ongoing titles for Batman in FOURTEEN years!
___________________________________________________
Decent Scott Gross cover for Looney Tunes.

___________________________________________________
Pretty good Chris Sprouse cover for Midnighter. Nice action shot.

___________________________________________________
Again, I think this is an interior page, not the cover.
Damn you, misleading solicits!!
___________________________________________________
Al Barrionuevo has been doing a good job on the Martian Manhunter covers. This one is a bit lackluster, though.

___________________________________________________
I honestly do not recall if this is a reused cover, so I included it here.
In any event, nice Glenn Fabry cover for the Neverwhere trade.

___________________________________________________
I do not get the concept of having Jonboy Meyers do the cover for Ninja Scroll.
He isn't drawing the interiors, and his art style is nothing LIKE the interiors.
If he was some huge name, I'd understand it...but, well, he isn't (not that he is not a fine artist).

___________________________________________________
Very nice Ben Oliver cover for Nightmare on Elm Street.
Oliver is really coming into his own as an artist.

___________________________________________________
I've decided to add some dialogue to this OMAC cover by Renato Guedes.
"YOU be the stupid OMAC robot thing!"
"No, YOU be the stupid OMAC robot thing!"
I am sorry, Renato, you deserve a lot better than to be drawing that stupid OMAC robot thing.
___________________________________________________
Can't say I'm thrilled by this Henry Flint cover for Omega Men.
Way too busy with the fire.

___________________________________________________
Wow, Matthew Clark! I am impressed!

Very nice style for this Outsiders cover.
___________________________________________________
Jerry Ordway is a fine, fine artist, but these Red Menace covers are pretty boring.

___________________________________________________
Okay, how weird is it seeing this Superman and Batman vs. Alien and Predator and Scalped cover, back to back?

Flip back and forth enough times and you'll start seeing Superman wearing a head dress.
By the by, Superman and Batman and Alien and Predator?
What a stupid, yet awesome, idea!!!
___________________________________________________
This Robert Pope Scooby Doo cover is a step up from his Block Party cover, but still not all that impressive.

___________________________________________________
Nice Supergirl and the Legion of Superheroes cover by Barry Kitson.

Has he left this book yet? Not that I WANT him to, but two years is a pretty long time for an artist to stay on a book nowadays, isn't it? Especially if they're as popular as Kitson is.
___________________________________________________
Very nice Tom Derenick cover for Shadowpact.

___________________________________________________
I dunno...does this cover make YOU want to follow Skye Runner?

___________________________________________________
VERY nice Phil Jimenez cover for Superman/Batman.
Could that be Despero?
___________________________________________________
Pretty good Al Barrionuevo cover for Superman.

___________________________________________________
Cool Tim Bradstreet cover for Sandman Mystery Theatre.

___________________________________________________
See, now THIS is a cool use of Kryptonite as a backdrop (as compared to the cover of #1).
Well done, Tim Sale!

___________________________________________________
I get that Stormwatch PHD is trying for a different vibe than most comics...but this cover is still weird.

___________________________________________________
Weird Darick Robertson art for Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

___________________________________________________
Nice Liam Sharp cover for Testament.

___________________________________________________
Definitely an...ahem...interesting cover for The Boys.

___________________________________________________
Interesting The Other Side cover by Cam Stewart.

___________________________________________________
You know what Shazam comics were always missing?
Not enough guns.
Thanks for addressing that, Mr. Winick!
___________________________________________________
It is official.
When even comic art legend Berni Wrightson can't make the goatee look good, you know it has to go!

___________________________________________________
That snake head was cool on this Tranquility cover!
Nicely done, Neil Googe!
___________________________________________________
Very nice Tony Daniel cover for this Teen Titans East cover.

Oh man, Batgirl as a villain - SOO lame!!
___________________________________________________
How did Batman Strikes Robin get into Teen Titans Go?!?!

___________________________________________________
That sicko! He was trying to use his X-Ray vision to look through Phantom Lady's top!!

___________________________________________________
This can't be the cover to Wetworks, can it?

___________________________________________________
Very nice Massimo Carnevale cover for Y The Last Man. He really stepped up in JG Jones absence.

___________________________________________________
HONORABLE MENTIONS
___________________________________________________
Jesus Saiz can draw anything.
I wish he didn't have to draw Sasha, though.
Man, do I not like her anymore.
___________________________________________________
Nice J.H. Williams III cover for Crossing Midnight, although I fear we aren't getting Williams' full ass on these covers.

___________________________________________________
Very cool Doug Mahnke cover for the last Seven Soldiers trade. Oh, how glorious it will all be when it finally finishes!

___________________________________________________
VERY clever Lee Bermejo cover for Hellblazer.

___________________________________________________
What can I say?
I dig Ted Kord.
I wonder why he's on the cover of Manhunter?
I wouldn't mind a return by Ted, no matter how lame the ressurection is.
With Ted's weight issues from the past, I'm shocked Chaykin didn't try to sneak in some protruding nipples.
___________________________________________________
Very cool Marcelo Frusin cover for Loveless.
Loses a few points at the blood being so consistent across.
___________________________________________________
Walt Simonson opening up a case of artistic whoop ass with this JSA Classified cover!
Wow, he really did a number of Hawkman there! He looks so badass!
___________________________________________________
I love watching Patrick Gleason experiment with his art.
This Robin cover is a nice result of him experimenting a bit. And interior art by Frazer Irving?!!? How could you NOT read this book?!
___________________________________________________
TOP FIVE
___________________________________________________
5. If you wanted to draw a cover of a comic that features the Helmet of Fate being examined by Detective Chimp, I don't think you could find a finer way of doing so than this Brian Bolland cover.

___________________________________________________
4. Suitably creepy Exterminators cover by Darick Robertson.

He really makes you feel the disgust, doesn't he?
___________________________________________________
3. Matt Wagner infuses this Batman and the Mad Monk cover with so much energy that it is pratically electrifying.

___________________________________________________
2. I give James Jean grief sometimes, but it's only because I know he can be so damn creative with his covers when he wants to be, and I grow to expect it, I guess.
Well, this cover is a great example of him being creative...
Nice, eh?
___________________________________________________
1. Darwyn Cooke, just by being Darwyn Cooke, almost automatically gets at least an honorable mention from me.
His first Spirit cover was just being Darwyn Cooke. This second cover?
It does a little more, which is why it is #1.
Darwyn Cooke rules.
___________________________________________________
Well, that's it for me!
Feel free to share YOUR prejudices (and your top five)!

That IS a pretty badass Walt Simonson cover for JSA Classified. It makes me want to pick up his arc just for the art.

That's not Power Boy, that's the Atom from the Tangent Universe with Batman, Joker, Flash, Power Girl. Green Lantern and Superman.

You really like that Connor Hawke cover? 'Cause it wins my "Fugly" award.

That Stormwatch PHD is a swipe from a famous shot of the Rat Pack, in case you didn't already know that. Also, you left out one important comment regarding that Action Comics Annual, namely: Mon-El! Mon-El! Mon-El!

It's so awesome that Simonson's writing and drawing the JSA:Classified story. We writes so much better when he's drawing. That is one cool cover.
I agree with most of your picks this week. I might've put Superman/Batman/Aliens/Predator a little higher. I want Superman/Batman/King Kong/Godzilla next.

I agree with that top 5 except for the Mad Monk cover. I think that's only in there because it's Matt Wagner, it's not bad but there are a lot better covers this month that could take its place. The Loveless cover, the Crossing Midnight, Walt Simonson's JSA Classified cover with the badass Hawkman, and others.

All that's missing from the Superman cover with the wings is a little mutant girl and some anti-mutant protest signs. It may not be a direct swipe, but it bears a very strong resemblance to Marvels #3.
Then again, art history isn't my strong suit. For all I know, the Marvels cover is an "homage" to some famous paining.

I was surprised that you didn't mention that the Krypto cover was an homage. I laughed when I saw it.

I'm pretty sure that's not Sasha on the Checkmate cover, but Jessica Midnight, given the cropped hair.
Brian
October 17, 2006 at 6:55 am
I'd like that Manhunter cover a lot more if the colours were flatter. Most of Chaykin's recent DC and Marvel art has been a turn off for me because of the colouring.
Favourites for me were Robin, Midnighter and Bolland's Detective Chimp/Fate.

although i'd have Darwyn Cookes baby, that cover would come second to James Jean's this month. Especially if you consider which one you'd rather have as a poster.
I expected Teen Titans Go! to be in top 5

The Rat Pack photo:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rat_Pack
Actually, there are others, taken from the same shoot (I'm assuming). Shawn Levy's excellent book -Rat Pack Confidential- includes a similar one, with Frank, Sammy, Dino, and Peter standing in front of the Sands sign instead of sitting. I think the Stormwatch Phd cover is a specific homage to the "standing" photo included in the Levy book (the resemblence is very close).

One thing I noticed about this column is that the title implies that there's going to be some discussion of what the covers reveal about the contents of the books, but actually it's the covers themselves that are discussed.
I'm just saying.

I'm just trying to picture the solicit text for that Batman Strikes cover. "This issue, the Penguin learns that even Bobblehead Robin isn't someone you want to mess with!"

"You know what Shazam comics were always missing? Not enough guns."
I'm going now to my happy place...it's 2009, there's a Shazam movie out and it's all been retconned back to the way it was before Winick was let loose...

It's the shading on that Manhunter cover that bugs me. Particularly around Ted's mouth. "Lips Do Not Work That Way."
As to what Ted is doing there, I believe the plotline is WW going on trial for killing Max Lord (AGAIN- wasn't she already acquitted in absentia?) so it'll probably just be flashbacks/revelations. I think I'll skip it.

Can someone please, please with Power Girl on top animate the two Batman cover picture thingies so we can all enjoy the Batman dance?
Please?

The "F13" cover is a thing of pure beauty. Thematically, it is borrowing some elements from the one sheet for Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood. Even if I wasn't already going to check that series out, that image alone would sway most gorehounds to pick up the book.
The "Deadman" cover is also quite nice in an 80s fashion which I like. And the cover to the "Action Comics" Annual fills me with Silver-Agey glee.

You can't really blame the lame Batman collection cover on Alex Ross -- aren't all of his covers for the "_________: The Greatest Stories" books clipped from other, larger works he's done? (On a related note, I miss the hyperbolic certitude of older collections that simply announced their contents were "The Greatest _________ Stories Ever Told"...)
Edward Liu
October 17, 2006 at 1:08 pm
Not sure if you're being facetious, but the bobblehead Robin on the Teen Titans Go! cover is Larry the Titan, a character who showed up in the 2nd or 3rd season. He was an homage to Bat-Mite, except he idolized Robin and not Batman. Mayhem ensued. Definitely one of the top "WTF?" episodes of Teen Titans.
Are you saying you still haven't watched the show yet? Horrors!

Yeah, the Volume 1 cover is a cropped version of a Batman illustration he did for a series of posters of Justice Leaguers, and the Volume 2 cover is pulled right out of "Batman: War on Crime", cropped, with the background deleted.

That 52 cover looks rather Watchmen-like to me. Mock a depressing DC all you like, but it's a pretty good cover.

It's even better when you see the finished cover to the Action Annual.
That's right. GO-GO CHECKS!

"So, what the heck was the deal with that whole Jason as Nightwing thing?"
It would be less confusing if this blurb wasn't right after the Friday the 13th cover.
Not that Jason/Nightwing wouldn't be COOL in an Aliens/Superman/Batman/Predator sort of way.
Also...
Hey! Tangent! Hooray!
Also...
Who's Power Boy!

- I agree that could just as easily be Jessica. Doesn't look enough like Kate Spencer to be Sasha.
- The best thing about the (new) Blue Beetle cover is that he looks like he's about to hit a windshield.
- That Portacio Batman cover is AWFUL. He looks like one of the Spy vs Spy guys.
- How the heck do you tell Roux from Acuna?
- The Gleason Robin cover is amazing.

None of these DC covers grab me. If I were confronted with them in a comic shop or newsstand I wouldn't feel compelled to pick any of them up.
hmm. Actually I've been feeling that way about a lot of DC output lately, regardless of the covers.
That Legion of Super-Heroes cover, wouldn't it be more fun if it homaged Fantastic Four #1? or is that just me?

The Spirit's face in that cover just sold me on the series. Perfect.

Nice pull, Mike! I THOUGHT it looked familiar!
Also, nice call by Craig with the Rat Pack homage...to which I say, "It is pretty weird to do a Rat Pack homage with a superhero comic book cover."

I'm so glad you still run this "Judging DC's Books By Their Covers" feature. How else would I know whether I'll be able to buy a comic that sports James Jean, Matt Wagner or Darwyn Cooke cover art in two months without jumping down to your "Top Five"?
Seriously. All three are great cover artists (and Highfather knows I loves me some Darwyn Cooke), but there's only so many months one can read "Comic X is the best cover solicited this month because Darwyn Cooke is the man." until it's just not funny anymore.
By the way, am I the only one who thought that January's Deadman cover was actually a rejected Shadowman cover?

Wow, Klarion in Robin, actually DRAWN by Frazer Irving? Yeah, that'll get me to buy that book! (That was easily my fave SS mini, closely followed by Frankenstein ... though I'm gonna have to re-read them all in the next week or two before the conclusion comes out.) Too bad Irving didn't draw the Robin cover too. (Hey, did anyone buy his Iron Man mini? I started to, just for his art, but dropped it after the second or third issue ... It was different enough to be interesting, but at the end of the day, Iron Man just doesn't suit Irving like Klarion did!)
That Fate/Chimp cover rules. Probably my #1. I also like the Connor cover (she's biting his lip! That's badass!), and the Catwoman cover too. Works even better for me than Darwyn's entry this month (Why won't you spread your love on Adam Hughes, Brian?!) As for that Portacio cover, I'm getting a whiff of Gil Kane from it. (Am I mad?)

Was there an answer supposed to be there, Jesse?
Brian Cronin
October 18, 2006 at 1:52 am
You are correct.
I was just complaining about him having to draw Sasha, in general.
I take any opportunity I can to express my displeasure with Sasha, as currently written in Checkmate.
Brian Cronin
October 18, 2006 at 1:54 am
There's some of thst mixed in!
Like the Robin discussion or my general distaste for Sasha in Checkmate!

Most correct! I was referring to Christos Gage's Deadshot mini-series, where they CHANGED Deadshot's costume!! FOR SHAME!!

I was being facetious.
I have still yet to watch the TV show, but I've read Teen Titans Go enough to know who Larry is.

AURGH!

Brian Cronin
October 18, 2006 at 2:07 am
It's not meant to be funny!
It's just a list of my five favorite covers from the particular month, and quite often, those three exceptionally talented cover artists end up in the Top Five, which isn't much of a surprise, as they're all really, really good.

October 18, 2006 at 6:43 am
Hi -- The blog is great, as always! As for the fate of "Krypto" on Cartoon Network, I can't find a straight answer anywhere, not even amongst the crew at Superman Homepage, but on-line episode guides at various places list "second season" titles, and, while CN is currently rerunning old stories, more recent ones feature Stretch-o-Mutt, who I think is a new character, so my best guess and hope is that Krypto is still going strong (even if the stories seem to star Krypto less and less all the time . . . I guess, like his Master, that's the problem you run into when you're a 99% invulnerable superhero -- not enough conflict in your stories . . .)
Still, my five year old and I love the show, and that, along with reprints of old Silver Age comics and early Marvel stuff, are the superhero stories we can enjoy together without fear of anything objectionable, so I hope Krypto will keep flying for some time!
"O" - the Humanatee!
October 18, 2006 at 7:55 am
Brian - Can you explain in what sense you see that Blue Beetle cover as Silver Age-y? 'Cause I sure don't see it.
Omar Karindu
October 18, 2006 at 9:08 am
-- I like the Superman/Batman cover, but doesn't Despero have three eyes? The cycloptic thing really looks more like one of those Infinite Crisis robots-that-shall-not-be-named.
-- Why do all of SImone Bianchi's Detective Comics covers look like grainy B+W photos of Batman maquettes?
-- So is Batman Strikes' Robin equipped with a bulletproof cranium? Or is a super-brained mutant whose mighty cerebrun will one day grow to a size that leaves him immobile? Someone must alert the Journal of MODOK Studies to this new development.
-- Sacrilege though it be, I find Matt Wagner's Batman: The Mad Monk cover a bit posed and stiff. *Ducks*
-- Damn. That Darwyn Cooke cover just overcame my last objection to reviving the Spirit. Beautiful characterization work and personality to the figures, wonderfully consistent stylization, and a nice simple layout. The colorist also deserves a bonus for the subtle "black widow" chromatic scheme.
-- Anyone else getting a Neal Adams/Jim Steranko vibe from that final LotDK cover?
-- I can see the Silver-Ageitude of the Manhunter cover with Blue Beetle if only because you can just picture Beetle saying something like, "You must not reveal the contents of this issue! A guaranteed shocker!" or somesuch.

That Dave Johnson cover reminds me of Canada's once prime minister Kim Campbell who posed for her official picture which hangs in parliament with her robes on a hanger in front of her nude.

October 18, 2006 at 5:47 pm
As far as Krypto goes, It depends on how you define "cancelled".
Like most weekday cable cartoons, a certain number of episodes is ordered...usually just enough to hit the "magic number" by which a show can be sold into syndication.
Only sometimes (as in the case of Kim Possible getting new episodes) are such shows renewed.
Grant
October 18, 2006 at 6:25 pm
The Simonson cover was my favorite. I might pick up that book if he's doing interiors. That's an awesome looking Hawkman.
Martin
October 20, 2006 at 10:25 am
Why so much love for the Matt Wagner covers? They're always dull and really stiff.
