In response to the Sales Tax at Graham Crackers in Illinois, 2 years ago they had to pay a fine of over 100,000 dollars for failing to collect sales tax. Back Issues aren't current periodicals according to Il State Law 86 Ill. Adm. Code 130.1910 and according to law have to have sales tax paid on them. acepot is full of shit himself.

I love the guy complaining about paying taxes on bin issues. I'm not from Illinois, but I can't imagine the tax on 50 cents being that outrageous. At least not so much that it would actually cause me to call the "Better Business Bureau" on them. You know they we probably laughing at you when they hung up the phone right?

Good to read you again, Greg, I lost you for awhile....this is a great idea and very funny. I've laughed out loud at least five times reading this and the previous installments. The extra sad thing is...I actually bought this comic when it came out. The art reminded me of Paul Gulacy. But I have never, ever finished reading it, it is completely incomprehensible. I commend you, sir, for actually going cover to cover. You are brave, but insane.
Can't wait to read the others!

I ended up at a local shop for about four hours on Friday while my roommate judged a costume competition there, so I had plenty of time to browse their back issues. I ran across Chaykin's Midnight Men (also from the Heavy Hitters Epic line) and thought it looked kind of interesting. Getting all four issues would have run about ten dollars though, and ten dollars was something I just didn't have.

As the night wore on and I basically got down to just inspecting every corner of the store, I found their 50 cent boxes underneath the kids comics and rummaged through there. Among a sea of House of M #8s, I found Midnight Men #1, 2, and 4. Sadly, it was 50 cents or four for a dollar, but I rounded it off with the first issue of the World of Metropolis miniseries.

Just finished #2 and now I really wanna go back and pay 2.50 for the third issue to finish it up. It's not fantastic but it's pretty interesting and definitely was worth the change I spent on it.

Yeah, his art on Whisper looked pretty different. Much more fluid. Actually not that appropriate for Whisper, who was a pretty gritty character and should have a rougher style. But I'd always wondered what happened to Spyder, and this book may explain it....

I remember when I was a kid, and my neighborhood store suddenly stopped charging sales tax on back issues. They'd been caught for that very thing. I wonder if the CBLDF would cover that?

Graham Crackers rips you off by charging "tax" on all back issue purchases. They say it's the law, but when I called the better business bureau, I found out that they were full of shit, and are basically just pocketing the "tax". Suffice it to say that I prefer to do my back issue bargain hunting elsewhere. I don't like giving my money to thieves and liars.

Another title that was part of the Heavy Hitters line was Sachs and Violens by Peter David. S&D later showed up in the last two issues of DC's Fallen Angel, and stayed with the title in the 18 year chronology gap between the end of the DC run and starting at IDW.

I'm going to have some upcoming posts on the Fallen Angel series, including a review of Sachs and Violens - which is due to be released by DC in TPB format before the end of the year - at my blog.

Ken - I probably COULD find a cheaper copy of this, but, of course, I'm just going into the regular back issue boxes and pulling books out, not actively looking for crappy comics. This book, I'm sure, is in the box that comic shops SHOULD have of "Take them! They're FREE!" but that's not how I work.

That's interesting about Hansen. On the back of this issue is a drawing he did as Spyder from a couple of years earlier. It's actually pretty good. And I remember seeing the ads for Whisper in other First books when he first started, and the art looks very good. I wonder why he changed his style. I hope it wasn't just to look KEWL. That would be a shame.

Oh, I forgot to say: Ive bought a lot of Heavy Hitters in quarter bins over the years (Greg, dude, I really can't believe you couldn't find a cheaper copy...) and most of them are awful. However, Howard Chaykin's Midnight Men is quite good, if you like Chaykin. It's basically his stock themes and characters, but done pretty well. Other than that one, stay away when you see that Heavy Hitters logo.

I've found oodles of good stuff in cheapie bins. I first discovered Nexus and Shade the Changing man there. I've managed to put together a (nearly) full run of Sandman Mystery Theater without paying more than a dollar for anything. Granted, there's a lot of garbage there usually, but I think part of the fun of being a collector is finding the gold in the dross.

Neil Hansen, BTW, worked on Whisper for First Comics unde the name "Spyder". He showed a lot of promise at the time. That's another great book from the quarter bin!

But I can't believe that no one has commented on the revelation that these books do not, in fact, come from the quarter bin. Whotta scandal! This should be covered in "Urban Legends".

I get my comics at Graham Crackers in Naperville, IL, and they have a 50 cent box that I regularly check. I've found some pretty good stuff in there, like several Jack Kirby Captain Victorys, or a couple issues of Ditko's Shade the Changing Man. And there's often recent stuff that is slightly damaged or was overstocked. And I've found some good stuff that I had not know about before, like several issues of William Messner-Loebs' Journey. I love those boxes.

The tiny amount of respect I have around here might go down if I admit that I didn't buy this in the quarter bin (or 50-cent bin, as they are often now). I actually buy all of these comics from the regular boxes. Yes, I'm sad. This cost me $2.75. Yes, it appreciated in value 25 cents!!!!!

Y'know, when I used to go quarter-box diving as a kid, I usually found something like coverless Silver Age DC, such as DOOM PATROL or METAMORPHO. My condolences at finding UNTAMED! Heavy Hitters was one of those lines that just seemed like it should have been better than it was.

I recently scored Negative Burn 1-3 from a quarter bin. that was this past Wednesday, I think.

My greatest achievement, though, was getting around half a dozen Kirby Black Panthers, about eight Sienkiewicz Moon Knights, and four issues of SOLO (Paul Pope, Tim Sale, Richard Corben, and one other) out of a bin. The BP and MKs aren't complete runs, but man, what a steal.

It really depends on the store, I find. A few years ago, Graham Cracker Comics in Lincoln Park, Chicago, had a 50-cent box (no quarter comics there!) containing things like an entire run of Peter Davi'd 1990s X-Factor run, about half of the Alan Moore WildCATS issues, and similarly underappreciated (at the time) goodies.

I say "a few years ago" because, frankl, I think I looted the cream of the crop from those boxes. I'v found stuff like Good-condition issues of Moench/Gulacy Master of Kung Fu from the 70s in quarter boxes before. Granted, I've found a lot more material like Untamed....

I love this feature, it's one of my favorite regular things we have here-- probably more than Urban Legends, even.

Still, realistically, the reason something ends up in a quarter box is usually because either A) it's damaged or B) it's crap. And 99 times out of a hundred, it's "B." We stocked up on quarter books at the show a couple of weeks ago, for Halloween -- we like giving out comics instead of candy, it's more fun and that way there's no candy around the house that we end up eating and replacing -- and Julie kept having to check with me about whether or not books were really appropriate to give out to the neighborhood kids. Roughly one third of what she showed me I ended up saying, "No," not so much because it was age-inappropriate but because it was so badly-done that the kids would hate it, as well as being part of some convoluted continuity mess that made it incomprehensible as a stand-alone piece. The books that made the cut were mostly Archies, Topps licensed stuff, and the Milestone line. There were a couple of Groos in there too but Julie said we should keep those for ourselves.

Where was I? I had a point... oh, yeah. I know we are spending our own money on this stuff and thus quarter boxes are the way to go, but sometimes it seems like kicking a cripple. If you find it there it's already got a couple of strikes against it. Once in a while you might try this exercise with a five-dollar budget in the spendier back issue bins, or with "the seventh indie book I see" at a small comics show, or something, and see how it shakes out.

I just can't comprehend that anyone would actually be selling that comic book anywhere.
