The easiest way to get the price down on comics? Sell more copies. The more copies you sell, the lower the profit per copy has to be to make the same amount of money. This all gets back to the point I've been practically screaming in everyone's face for months now, that comic books have to find ways to sell themselves outside of the Direct Market, because (all together now) the current comics marketing plan is to wait for someone to walk into a store demanding their product, then sell it to them.

I thought the first episode of Heroes was a disaster, the second was brilliant, and the others just so-so. There's nothing new for comic fans, but at least it's better than Misfits of Science.

I'm just happy to have something to watch on Monday nights after, what, a decade long drought.

<strong>Steve Flack said …What book was that reprint of “Legion of Monsters” and “Spider-Man meets Brother VooDoo”? I feel I need it.</strong>

Marvel Milestones. It actually has that same Marvel Premiere cover.

I was pleasantly shocked to see that Legion of Monsters reprint. I had that book when I was a kid, and always hoped we'd see more Legion of Monsters stories, but I guess that never happened.

"As an actual piece of FICTION, I’m not in love with it but I don’t hate it either, I just want it to, you know, get on with it. But I am endlessly fascinated with the way it’s apparently being marketed, it’s so clearly aimed right at us. Rolled out at the San Diego Con. Online graphic novel tie-in. Geek shout-outs and namechecking in the dialogue. For fans of my generation, being so shamelessly courted and sucked up to by a major TV network is frankly disconcerting."

Maybe that's why I don't like it. It feels like I'm being relentlessly pandered to.

That and the shoddy writing and acting.

<b>Grant said …"Am I the only comic fan that thinks Heroes kind of sucks?"</b>

I imagine now that you've gone ahead and asked there will be lots more chiming in.

I don't actually think it SUCKS. I wish it would move faster and get somewhere. Which is something I say about a lot of mainstream superhero books, which led to the a-ha moment that, my God, this really is modern comics on TV.

Just a goofy thought…

Everybody seems to think the price of single issues is inappropriate for the amount of material we are getting these days, especially with decompressed stories. Why not go back to pulp paper and four-color presses for the floppies and do high-end printing on the graphic novels? "

Easy, because sales would plummet. You would have to have some sort of illegal collusion to get all the companies to do it, and if you couldn't get them to do that, then sales on the cheap books would go way down because the lower price would mean fewer orders on the part of the retailers (because they would be making less off of them). Also, you'd have to recolor or possibly reink pages if you're going from one-format to the other. It would just add more cost.

Also, the reason why they don't do more ads has been explained time and time again. They need companies interested in buying the ads. Remember when Marvel did more ads about a year ago and how many people complained that there were ads every other page? That didn't work out too well.

Oh, and the TV=magazines (not 'floppies') and DVDs=TPBs, doesn't quite work because you have to factor in reruns, other channel airings, iTunes, and syndication.

"Spider-Man! He's DEFYING us!"

It's not that Moondog is about to slit that woman's throat that bothers Brother Voodoo. It's not even fact that Moondog is giving voodoo a bad name by using his power to pick on a politically explosive target like an upper-class white women.

No, Moondog won't stop when a pair of superheroes tell him to knock it off. Uppity bastard!

I came <i>this</i> close to picking up a copy of Essential Tomb of Dracula v2 a few months back, hoping that in it's reprinting of Giant-Size Dracula #1, it would reprint the Stan Lee-written five-pager <a href="http://community.livejournal.com/scans_daily/1631980.html" rel="nofollow">"On With the Dance"</a>. Sadly, it was not to be.

Hell, I'd love to see an Essential Atlas Horror.

Wow, great cover. I really think Brother Overdramatically State The Obvious needed a larger role in Civil War.
