How much actually covert action did the WildCATs do back in the day, anyway? I seem to recall them mostly fighting giant glowy spaceships above major metropolitan areas.
It wasn't the name they gave to themselves, it was the name I.O. gave to them while investigating the scenes where the WildC.A.T.s had been (and yep, they were still covert at that point).
I seem to recall there being a bit in the first Mr. Majestic miniseries by, I think, Joe Casey. They actually address this point and muse about how the team should probably be called WildOATs.

Well, uhm...what if they just don't tell anyone their team name?

They went on a couple during the too brief James Robinson run. He seemed to be trying to make the book more of a SHIELD ripoff then a X-Men ripoff.
I never understood the Wild part which implied they were a "Rogue Covert Action Team"

When the rabbit's right, he's right. Woulda been the perfect name for a GI Joe type thing, though.

What else could you call the WildCATs?
