Great article on one of comicdoms most underated and underacknowledged talents.

High time that someone took the time to pay tribute to Bill's vast contribution to the medium. I loved Micronauts, Swords and his Howard the Duck work amongst others ( I know the last may not be a popular opinion but hey, apparently its a free world).

Great job David and CBR.

Everyone - check the link and donate. Make a difference!!

Cheers, Chris

Hi Corey et al-

Thanks for catching the error on Tyrone's sir name. The proofs on the site are uncorrected galleys, but I bet that one would have slipped past me.

My sincere thanks to EVERYONE who is looking forward to this project and to those who have generously supported it financially. And of course, to Greg, for suggesting this interview, which has already given this project more exposure. I know that Mike is touched by your support and enthusiasm, as am I.

Best wishes everyone-

Great project!

Looking at the site and the preview pages of the benefit book, I noticed that the text got the last name of Cloak wrong. His real name is Tyrone Johnson, not Tyrone Washington.

I hope more info on Cloak & Dagger can be found in the book. They are definitely my favorite Mantlo work, and I'm really glad to hear they meant so much to him. Reading back-issues I remember thinking how curious it was that Bill left as writer, and how the stories became rather odd by the "Misadventures of Cloak & Dagger" series.

Anyway, great work!

I totally agree with Matt Bird on Mantlo's Hulk run. Those issues will always be "definitive" of the Hulk character to me. Lots of action and enough good old fashioned Marvel soap opera to keep the series progressing. Rom was always an under-rated series. It had 72 issues and several annuals, pretty impressive for a toy line that never got off the ground.

Great to hear it. I just re-read Bill's entire legendary run on Hulk, 245-313, one of the greatest and most profound epics ever to appear in this medium. I've been re-reading a lot of my old comics and I find almost nothing holds up as well as this run. When I read the recent poll on the top 50 writers, my first thought was "Where's Bill Mantlo? This list isn't worth a damn if he's not on it."

One thing that impresses me about Bill Mantlo's body of work is the sheer volume of beloved minor characters that he had a hand in creating. Such as the U-Foes, Sabra, Firebird (granted almost all of her development was later under Steve Englehart), Darkstar, Carrion, the original White Tiger, and the list goes on.

Rom: Spaceknight is one of my all time favorite comic books. It speaks volumes of Bill Mantlo's talents that he was able to take a book that was to be based around a silly one-off toy and managed to create an exciting, riveting series that I continue to re-read over and over to this day. I loved how the Rom series was such a deft blend of sci-fi, horror, and superheroes. Great stuff.

Thanks for the heads up on this Bill Mantlo tribute project. I'll definitely be picking it up.

That's a very good column, but I would like to point out that Xander Berkeley will forever be the guy who inexplicably cheats on Virginia Madsen in Candyman. What's up with that?

This is why you're only allowed to post once a week, because your essays are too darned interesting.
