Here’s a twenty-question comic book trivia quiz!
Have fun!
Giving the O Face
DC likes to add the letter o to words where it does not belong to make superhero and supervillain names. I’m not talking characters whose names naturally end in O, like Halo. I mean creating brand new words that end with O, like Destructo. Or even foreign words that end in O! Give me the name that matches each description.
1. Member of the Super-Malon who controls the earth.
2. Superman’s opposite
3. Classic Justice League villain who accidentally created the Zoo Crew.
4. Former villain member of the New Guardians.
5. Android with the Justice League’s powers
6. Disgraced Green Lantern of Korugar.
7. Shape-changing alien nemesis of Plastic Man
8. French member of the Young Allies who could turn intangible.
9. Sev Tcheru’s codename
10. Super-Ape.
11. The first Cro-Magnon boy
12. Worked for the Ghost against Captain Atom.
13. The Green Lantern planet.
14. Shared a body with Bruce Gordon
15. A former carny who was one of the Human Bomb’s Bombardiers.
16. Darkseid’s main assassin.
17. Villain who killed Gypsy’s parents.
18. Snake-tattooed archer
19. The Legion villain with a destructive touch.
20. The killer of one of Triplicate Girl’s bodies.
Good luck, and have fun!

What, no Starro?
Andrew
November 1, 2006 at 10:16 am
Isn’t Starro the answer to Number 3, the accidental creator of the Zoo Crew?
And Number 4 - Floro, as he was called in the New Guardians, aka Jason Woodrue, aka Floronic Man

Darn - I was going to be able to answer some of these this time, but Aaron Kashtan beat me to most of the ones that I know. Except I’m pretty sure that Andrew is right and it was Starro who created the Zoo Crew … and a quick trip to Wikipedia confirms it.
And one of these actually doesn’t fit the theme of “characters whose names don’t naturally end in ‘o’” - Mano is Spanish for “Hand”, so it would naturally end in ‘o’.

More than one of these fails the “regular word with ‘O’ tacked on the end test.” Kanto, Mogo, Shado - I’m not familiar with the words “kant”, “mog” and “shad”. You might as well have included super-chimp Beppo and JLA villain Professor Ivo. Word+O is certainly a DC staple, and there probably are 20 examples of word+O out there - why not stretch deeper to fill out a quiz that matches the intro? What about the one-time JLEurope villain Deconstructo? (I really just wanted to somehow work that in.)

6. Sinestro
10. Titano

2. Bizarro
3. Despero (This one is a fairly wild guess)
5. Amazo
6. Sinestro
10. Titano
14. Eclipso
19. Mano (which is actually Spanish for “hand” and therefore doesn’t fit the category)
20. Computo

Unless it is not the actual answer, Stickler could have also mentioned “Anthro,” #11, which is in fact cutting a word, “anthropology,” short. I have always assumed that “Shado,” #18, is similarly derived from “shadow,” which he also seems to have failed to pick up on. Besides, there really is a word “shad” in English; it’s a kind of fish.

#16 is Kanto.
Hooray, I actually knew one of them before someone else. That happens… not often.

To echo previous posts, yes, there are alot of these types of names (word+o) but
KANJA RO
MOGO
ANTHRO
SHADO
MANO
KANTO
don’t count, cos the first two aren’t words at all, and the next two are misspellings of words that end with an”o” sound anyway, and the other two are just real words.

7. Shape-changing alien nemesis of Plastic Man — AMORPHO, who appeared in a single issue of Police Comics that was reprinted years back in DC’s Greatest Golden Age Stories ever told.
Also, there’s a third Super-Ape from the Silver Age — Yango, a gorilla from Krypton who became a protector of African wildlife.

I can’t believe I didn’t get Bizarro.
I’m so embarrassed. If JulianPerez sees this I’ll have lost all weight in any of our regular disagreements about Superman comics

Surely the champion “O”-characters must be two of Denny O’Neil’s creations from Richard Dragon, Kung-Fu Fighter: the O-Sensei, who bucks the trend by fronting his O-ness; and Professor Ojo.
Denny O’Neil — sneaking “O”s into comics for four decades and counting.

The question contains the phrase, “foreign words that end in O.” Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think it did initially.

“pampero” is a Spanish word for “from the pampas”.
It’s like “pamper”.
