According to my mother, the first time my father proposed she said no. Their 25th Aniversary is next year, so I’d say it’s not neccasarily a deal breaker.

didn't MAry Jane refuse Peter Parker twice before agreeing to marry him? Okay, fiction, but anyway ...

I recently brought the 4th and 5th trades of Green Arrow, as I'd enjoyed the series when it started and had the first four.
I sat down and re-read through the Kevin Smith Stuff (GREAT! REALLY, REALLY GREAT!), the Brad Metzler arc (GOOD!) and then got into the Winnick stuff (BAD! REALLY, REALLY, BAD!).

Winnicks pace is horrific, every villain either looks the same (two arcs with monster/troll things in a row?) and other superheroes swing buy for no reason.
Also, the Green Arrow Family all seem to hate each other now. And one of them has HIV.
It's horrific shit.
Smith and Metzler had this great silver age vibe going, and Winnick just dragged it down with this early 90's grittiness that just sucked all the fun out of it.
It wouldn't suprise me to learn that it was his writing that made Hester and Parkes leave the book.
Nothing ever happens and if it does, it's either depressing for the characters, or insanely violent for bit part characters.
It's like he couldn't wait to get on the book and inject with 'reality' - reality of course being the early issues of Spawn.

He also forces his book Outsiders into it - I've only read them in their appearance but boy do they SUCK. They read like a bad X-Force/Youngblood clone or somthing.
After pestering Connor Hawke as to wether he was in a monastery for spiritual reasons or because he liked men, Green Arrow asks one of the team "Are you guys always like this?" and gets the response "No. Usually we're surly".
Thats shit dialouge. Brandon Choi wouldn't go there.
(also note: The Outsiders aren't introduced in the story, we're just supposed to know who they are. They also don't do anything).

And I haven't even gotten into how clever he thinks he is when he writes the riddler (and you do have to ask why a Batman Villian is in two arcs of Green Arrow).

All in all, Judd Winnick is a BAD superhero writer. Putting him on a book is going to drop reader numbers in the long term. Because he really is that BAD.

You know, it's interesting--I was going to defend this issue, because I was a big fan of Winick's run on Green Lantern and I thought you were being a bit harsh on his writing style, but then I realized...you're absolutely right. (OK, maybe not about his writing style--I think that's more an "either it clicks or it doesn't" thing. Your tastes may vary. But it does work better here than it does on 'Shazam', I think we can all agree on that.)

But yes, even though I enjoyed this run, this is exactly the sort of thing I was talking about when I wrote the Punk Comics Manifesto--this is not a comic that works on an issue by issue basis, this is a comic that's intended to be read in trade paperback-sized chunks (and, in fact, I wound up giving up on single issues during Winick's run on GL and read the last 12 issues or so in trades.) And yes, if it's meant to be read in 150-page installments, why are they publishing it in 22-page installments?

Valuable lesson here, for me at least--saying something doesn't work as a single-issue story isn't the same as saying it's bad...just that a short story is different from a chapter of a novel, as it were.

"Are these questions I’m meant to ask? That any normal, rational person is meant to ask?"

First question: Yes, you're a comic book fan.
Second question: No, you're a comic book fan.

According to my mother, the first time my father proposed she said no. Their 25th Aniversary is next year, so I'd say it's not neccasarily a deal breaker.

I was working in a comic shoppe when that issue came out and I remember thinking that bit on the beach was pretty pointless. Her explanation iirc was that the sun helped charge her up more but really, would a few square inches of fabric make much difference? And if so, shouldn't she take off her bottoms as well? Or shave her head so she can feel that good all the time? Does her hair absorb solar energy?

I'll chime in. It's always been the middle finger. I know this because when I was a youngster I was chided for wearing a ring on the middle finger and not the 'ring' finger, and my explanation that I was doing it like Hal Jordan did fell on deaf ears. One of the earliest of many instances in my life of being made to feel stupid for knowing something about comics. Ah, but if they could see me NOW! BWAHAHAHAHA!

...actually, if they saw me now, I doubt they'd think different.
