Sorry - It's just that Byrne has a history of saying insensitive things in the wake of people dying (Christopher Reeve and Steve Irwin) and has also upset Cockrum's wife in the past, so I thought the odds were good.

Dan CJ:
Let’s see how quickly John Byrne can say something insensitive!
How about "I have no words. R.I.P." ?

or,

"Looking back on Dave's career, I found myself noting that he was part of that first wave of new talent that came into the industry after the interegnum of the late 1950s and early 60s. And what a wave it was! In a very short span of time we saw the arrival of folk like Neal Adams, Berni Wrightson, Walt Simonson, Mike Kaluta, Archie Goodwin, Roy Thomas, Len Wein, and Dave himself.
Good company to be in!"

and lastly,

"...his life and his work will not be forgotten.

****

We can hope, Greg -- but at times like this I wonder. We can, for instance, look for the next few days and weeks to be filled with fulsome praise for Dave from people who have spent the last few years resolutely not giving him work. This is, as noted many times before, not an industry that takes care of its own."

Seems to me John's been very respectful, honest, and appreciative to Dave.

So, what was the sense of you making the remark?

This is a real shame. I knew that he had been sick for quite some time, but didn't realize that he had died. I always liked his art, it was clean and fun, and he was a genius at coming up with costumes and characters.

He was instrumental in reviving two huge franchises for both DC (LSH) and Marvel (X-Men). He was a huge talent in the industry. My condolences to his family.

Oh man, that's just sad.
I really thought that he was an okay artist- he was definitely good at what he did in life. And without him, we wouldn't have the X-Men (or comics in general) that we have today.

damn.

Cockrum's "pirate style" design sense was unique, and his art, which has it's own distinctive flair, was always immediately recognizable.

While he wasn't my "all-time" favorite, I did cut my teeth on his early X-MEN stuff when I was a kid.

I'll have to dig out his old "FUTURIANS" graphic novel and comics.

I liked that team.

Rest in peace, Dave.
