Also, Timmie and Chip are robots, not children & Ballistic was like Bullseye. Stryker knows that because they have a history. Once she took out one of those armed hilicopters by throwing a pebble into the pilot's brain. If that happened in Ultimates or Authority People would be cheering.

I just want to chime in and say that the comic you bought wasn't the first issue of Cyberforce. It was the seventh. Rather than continue from the miniseries directly, they start with a regualr series number one. After reading the first six issues, you're supposed to already know what's going on... and things are going on. Its not the best comic ever, but cut those guys some slack, huh?

That last panel in the post is hilarious. I love that the big metal guy is making sure to pull on his wardrobe. I guess he's modest and doesn't want people to see his metal junk.

VCHAGZ - Man, that's a hard question! What books do I recommend? Do you have all day? That might have to be a post in the future, so everyone can recommend their own picks. Come back and check it out!

I bought Joe Quesada's Marvel debut. Sometimes I wish he would step down as EiC, because his work is just great. He's an amazing penciler.
I have almost all the issues from the Killer Instinct crossover. This is the only one I'm missing. I also have Chris Claremont's WildC.A.T.S. issues, which also weren't very good. I guess starting to read comics a year ago gives you a higher standard writing-wise, doesn't it?

I've developed a perverse interest in comics from this period. It's sort of the "decadent" phase of comics- thanks to the speculators, it must have seemed that anything with any artifical significance attached would sell, so writers and artists kinda went a little insane.

Heck, I even bought the first issue of Liefeld's AVENGERS, and am seriously considering ONSLAUGHT REBORN.

The only Image comic I ever bought was the first issue of a three-issue VELOCITY mini-series. The local trading card shop (we don't have a comic book shop) had a few long boxes of random comics a guy was trying to get rid of. The cover is what sold me. Just Velocity running across the cover waving at me on a white background. Simple and eye-catching. I should pick up the other two issues just to have the set.

Anyhoo...

I love this column!

It's funny, I stopped collecting comics in the 90's because everything seemed to be so bad. I'm not sure if it's sad or embarrassing that I've had over half of the books you've reviewed so far.

I sold a bunch of comics to a friend of mine who was looking to get into the hobby and I've been recently helping him organize everything. Occasionally he'll ask about characters that are on covers and what they're powers are. I'm hitting a good average for all the DC Marvel stuff, but when he goes to bag and board a '92-93 Image comic, I can't get a single one. I think I've blocked that part of my comic collecting history out of my consciousness.

I just want to add that most of the big Image Comics launch titles back in '92 did value art over writing, with the exception of McFarlane. The Cyberforce #1 from the miniseries was immediately sold-out. You can see that Lee and Silvestri blatantly copied the X-Men to make characters for their own titles. Cyblade=Psylocke, Stryker=Cable, Warblade=Wolverine, etc. Even so, Image was willing to put more money into the books, using what were cutting edge techniques at the time: glossy paper, computer coloring, etc. Moreover, they kept the cost down to $1.95-$2.20. For a young comic reader, this really made a difference.

Marvel was offering Uncanny X-Men for 4 bucks with dogshit art on newsprint by John Romita, Jr. and overwrought dialogue by Scott Lobdell. They put all these 30th anniversary issues for all the flagship titles that had a gimmick cover, a high price, and little else. Image forced Marvel, and I guess D.C., to make their comics look better to keep in competition.

I'm looking to get back into comics. What do you recommend?

"By the way, that’s a good way to get people interested in your new title - make the first issue either the first or second part of a crossover (your first three issues, actually). Thank God the big companies - like, I don’t know, Marvel - didn’t pick up on this trend."

Although it always is the worst idea ever to launch a book in a crossover (or have any serious continuity that isn't naturally explainable in the course of the issue - if it's got a #1, it should be a readers starting point), Cyberforce already had a mini-series before hand, and it sold like an Image launch title, and Wildcats was selling heaps, so I guess they assumed (and had sales charts to back them) that everybody in the world had already read the previous issues.

As for Silvestri's brother, he got Silvestri his first gig by going to a hotel the editors were staying at at a con, getting into one of their rooms by pretending to be room service, and then refusing to leave until they had looked at Marc's work.
I think he still works at Top Cow or image, although not in a creative role.
(and man must his dialouge have been bad if VCHAGZ is saying that Choi's was better).

"No WAY! The 1993 Jays were so much better, and if we were Image characters, we would now have to fight!"

If you were in an Image book, you'd already have been fighting.

Were the 1992 Toronto Blue Jays a better team than the 1993 variety?

Yes, probably. Certainly their pitching was better.

I actually have cyberforce 1-2, and wildcats 5-7. So i don't have the conclusion to the storyline. Misery has mind control powers over Ripclaw and the rest of Cyberforce. She convinces them to help her steal technology that would bring her dead lover back to life. The wildcats team tries to stop Misery, because she also plans to sell this technology to the Daemonites, who are the WildCATS enemies. I must say that the WildCATS comics are better drawn and on glossy paper. The scripting is also much better.

I stopped collecting comics in '94, but I had an X-men subscription through Spring '96.

Even back in '92 I thought Cyberforce was one of the worst designed Image teams. What was with the guy with 3 metal arms on one side of his body? Because more hands means you can hold more guns!

"Killer Instinct" was, without a doubt, the best story ever. You had Silvestri and Lee! The superstars of WildC.A.T.s and Cyberforce! A really hot chick villain! The only thing better would be Youngblood and Wetworks teaming up and hunting after Spawn, whose only allies are Brigade and their new leader, Shadowhawk!!!

Oh, and Misery is not the same as Miss Misery from Sleeper, which would have been rad!
