Wow! Great work Greg. I just started an issue by issue overview on my blog, and if I'd seen this first I might have been a little too intimidated.

As for ‘magic’ vs. ‘magick,’ years ago a read a book about self-publishing in Britain. I have no idea why. But the only thing I remember from it is the origin of the word ‘magick.’ It was an alternate spelling popularized by Aleister Crowley because, numerologically, it has more power than the actually spelling of the word. I don’t know enough about numerology to explain why.

I'm not sure about Olwen, because she is called a changeling and has that weird fly-like head in one panel. I suppose it doesn't matter all that much.

Of course, Matt, by the time of the "far future" from which the Queen hails, Latin probably won't exist anymore anyway!!!! I just like nit-picking about things occasionally - I love the name, because it sounds cool.

Enjoying the columns so far. But about Olwen: I was pretty sure that was the real Olwen, only she's been corrupted by her time captive among the Sheeda.

Gloriana Tenebrae is eventually revealed as being from the far future, so her name in the future could be based in Latin, with the Welsh-speakers in the past repeating her name as they heard it, rather than making it up from their own language or even knowing what it means. That sentence is confusing, but it makes sense in my head.

I'm pretty sure Morrison set it up in the series that there have been numerous "Shining Knights" through the years.

So Sir Justin still exists.

I just want to verify something. With this maxiseries and Infinite Crisis, does that mean that the original Sir Justin is no more? That would be a shame...while a crossdressing warrior girl from the past makes for interesting storytelling, I figured the original would have promise in this day and age. I figured he'd be among the top five most popular heroes of all time within the world of the DCU because he served with three legendary armies (Round Table, All-Star Squadron, Seven Soliders of Victory), and emerged from the past on two different occasions.

Didn't Bianchi say in an interview (memory failing) that his sister posed for him as a model for Justin/a?

A bit of a clue, that...

Thanks, Johnny Boy. That's still kind of vague, isn't it?

From the American Heritage Dictionary:

mag·ick (māj'ĭk) n. An action or effort undertaken because of a personal need to effect change, especially as associated with Wicca or Wiccan beliefs.

According to my good, stolid dictionary, it's NOT spelled both ways, but that's because my dictionary doesn't have anything to do with those weird, New-Age hippie spellings of words! I don't care how he spells it, I just don't like it, because it's stupid. And it smacks of Morrison being pretentious - oooh, look at me, I'm not a stage magician, I do REAL magiCK! Oh yeah? Well, what the hell does that mean, exactly?

Stupid hippies. Sorry, it's early in the morning and I'm grumpy.

just so you know, magicks is actually spelled that way. look it up. magic and magick are different things. especially with Morrison being a practicing magician (and that doesn't mean stage magic, but more magick)

Since the past Justin's (presumably) Welshie dialogue is rendered as plain English in the past sequences, perhaps Olwen is actually saying a Welshie equivalent to the Latinate "Gloriana Tenebrae?"

As to the JLA references with the "true lantern" and so forth...Seven Soldiers #1 seems to suggest a sort of "secret origin of all superheroes" that might go some distance in explaining their presence.

The green lantern thing also bothered me. My guess is that it's, as you say, part of Morrison's attempts to link the Knights of the Round Table with modern superheroes like the JLA. I hadn't noticed Arthur's orange tunic (or at least hadn't made the Aquaman connection), but it's possible the creators wanted to include a number of palpable connections to familiar superhero mythology.
