I loved the Spider-Man / Firelord fight. Especially the way Spidey kept looking for someone to help him.

And, it really reinforced the trend at the time to show that if you can't hit Spider-Man, then he will eventually wear you down and defeat you. He did that with a lot of villians (Titana and the Absorbing Man come to mind.)

Can I second the disbelief at the way the Spider-Man vs Firelord fight is written off here? And during a Snark Free Corner at that!

I'll admit, I always get choked up on the last page of ASM 122. I can't believe Gerry Conway was only 19 when he wrote that.

"Sins Past" is no longer part of my personal continuity. It's an Imaginary Story.

'Spider-Man: Blue' on the other hand is 100% canonical.

Gerry Conway's long Batman/Detective run was right up there with his stellar Spider-Man run. The guy gets way too little credit. Of course now he's crying all the way to the bank, making mad money as a "Law and Order" writer.

Gerry Conway's Spider-man was actually pretty good, wasn't it? I mean, dude didn't have the most stellar track record in comics, but he seemed to have a real affinity for Spidey.

"The “Gwen’s kids” thing actually does make some sense, if they’re Peter and Gwen’s. It’s kind of odd the way Gwen just goes off to Europe for a while, and makes you wonder where the writers were going with that in the first place."

I think, by then, the writers had realized that the relationship had progressed to where either Peter had to tell Gwen he was Spider-Man, or they had to write her out of the book.

What was funny about "Acts of Vengeance!" was the weird metatextuality of it. Loki would just run around to supervillains, saying, "Hey, you used to fight this guy. Why not fight THIS OTHER GUY? He'll be unprepared and you'll kick his ass!"

Sins Past was a horrible story, it really turned me off JMS. I understand he originally intended it to be about Peter and Gwen's kids. Which could've worked, but since the editors canned that he turned to this alternative which is as ridiculous as it is creepy. He should've just thrown away the whole idea.

By the way, this is totally off-topic, but where does the term 616 come from? I understand what it means but how did the term originate?

"and every time there is an alternate reality story, Peter ends up with Gwen."

Which I think is pure bollocks. Just the law of averages says there must be some universe where Gwen lived, but she and Peter didn't end up together.

In fact, and I'll be excoriated up and down for this, I think it's likely what would have happened if Gwen had lived in 616,

Since Hawkeye - unlike Green Arrow - actually managed to commit to a woman and marry her (and they even stayed together until her death!), I think that demonstrates that Hawkeye was able to tie the stronger knot.
