The charter is for "Land" or "Earth" Morrisons' artist for this series was Chinnese, so i doubt it was just thrown there.

I think the key thing about the Sheeda is that they are *both* our insectile descendants from the far future *and* the fairy folk. Morrison's conceit is that that is what the fairy folk have always been, or at least some versions of them. There's no real distinction - that's why it's Frankenstein vs. Fairyland, not Frankenstein vs. the Future.

Now, this doesn't fit too well with the Vertigo fairies from Sandman and Books of Magic, but then the concepts of the Dreaming and alternate realities cover a multitude of inconsistencies. You can have imaginary fey based on accounts of the Sheeda Harrowing gain a certain degree of reality based on belief. We also can't tell for sure from Morrison if the Sheeda are the only possible future, or if there are others where our descendants are basically benevolent, or if the Sheeda ensure their own history with their Harrowings in the past. Nor do we know whether they come before or after Lovecraft's coelopterans...

When Ed refers to Brutus as the "last" of the Four Golems, he may simply mean that in the sense of "the one I have left." I took Strato's presence at Vincenzo's side as a sign that while the members of the Newsboy Army may have been estranged, Ed was still keeping tabs on the rest, and dispatched one of his team to look after Vincenzo. Maybe the other two were destroyed, or maybe they were also secretly watching over Ed's former teammates and possibly even reporting back to him.

And adding a note to the chorus of praise: these summaries have been excellent...and while I enjoy the annotations on Barbelith as well, your pieces are much more accessible to the general reader.

Greg

I'm with Jeremy. These posts are the thing I currently most look forward to in my RSS reader. Truly excellent stuff.

To paraphrase Bob Hope,

Thanks for the summaries...

In Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, Strato is the soldier who holds Brutus' sword that he might run upon it.

Greg I wanted to say how much i enjoy these posts. I'm in the middle of re-reading Seven Soldiers right now and while I knew were a few connnections I had no idea there were anywhere near as many as you point out. Also all the allusion to other fictions you point out are just great. i honestly look forward to these every night. Keep it up.
