Golden Age Christmas – Superman Visits Christmastown U.S.A.

Welcome to the latest edition of Golden Age Christmas, where we will feature a different Golden Age Christmas comic book story every day from now until Christmas Eve!

Today we look at a cute (if a bit straightforward) Superman Christmas story by Alvin Schwartz and Win Mortimer from 1947’s Action Comics #117, as Superman comes to Christmastown, U.S.A.!

Over in the mid-west’s Central Valley, a man worries about his missing grandson, who was supposed to play Santa Claus in the town’s famous Christmas festival. A festival so famous that the Daily Planet flies its two top reporters out to cover it (which makes no sense, but hey, it’s Christmas!)…

The flooding is a major issue, but Superman has an interesting solution…

I firmly DO believe that keeping people’s spirits up is an important thing during a crisis like this, but I have to wonder if Superman’s efforts might not have been better served helping flood victims. But that’s neither here nor there.

Lois encounters a young man suffering from amnesia. She decides to stick with him to help him out of the goodness of her heart. Nah, I’m just kidding, she figures she can exploit his amnesia for personal gain…

Of course, as it turns out, the young man is just who you think he is (his grandfather had to dress as Santa with him missing)…

Superman thinks that the best thing to add to a flooding crisis is a snow storm…

I kid, Superman, I know it is only a light dusting.

Cute story by the great Alvin Schwartz. Great Win Mortimer art. He was a very good artist.

That’s a funky hairstyle Lois is sporting in this story. And a weird looking version of Perry White.

This art has been modernized. Perry White looks weird because his hair is made to look 1970s. Same for Clark with the sideburns. And Lois’s hair is retouched. They must have revamped the pages for some big tabloid edition printed in the 1970s.

The story was reprinted in Limited Collectors’ Edition C-34, April, 1975.

Yeah, that’s where this story is from. The Limited Collectors’ Edition.

If you do a Silver Age Christmas series, I look forward to the Teen Titans’ Christmas story with Mr. Scrounge.

Someone obviously gave Perry a bad toupee for Christmas!
