The new Fantastic Four sounds like a clever idea, especially written by Dwayne McDuffie. And it also sounds just like any number of previous changes the Fantastic Four has made, so it is not really that big of a deal.
I wonder if this is going to “rip the internet in half” or if “nothing will ever be the same?” Possibly “there is no going back.” If you believe that, I’ve gt a bridge in teh marvel universe I can sell you.
OMG THEY’RE MESSING WITH ICONS IT’S CHANGE FOR CHANGE’S SAKE WTF…
Ahem. Actually, this does look like it could be pretty cool, especially with McDuffie writing. The first time I read an FF book was during the time where Reed and Sue were replaced by Crystal and Ms. Marvel II, so I’ve kind of got a soft spot for this sort of thing.
“The first time I read an FF book was during the time where Reed and Sue were replaced by Crystal and Ms. Marvel II, so I’ve kind of got a soft spot for this sort of thing.”
I have a soft spot for that run myself. I always felt like it was this strange little detour from the usual FF jazz and shook up the dynamics of the team in a way that felt “in the family” and somewhat plausible.
I loved the run of FF when She Hulk replaced the Thing. I also dug it when Powerman was a member. I guess it kind of depends on how you see the FF. Are they a family of adventurers? Or are they the Earth’s first line of defense against the rest of the galaxy? If the latter, Black Panther and Storm are the perfect replacements for Reed and Sue.
It may not be Earth-shattering — and I’m sure Marvel will promote it as such — but that is genuinely a team I’d like to read about.
Storm and the Black Panther are pretty good analogues for Reed and Sue, really. One is a super-genius beyond reproach, and the other is the heart and soul who also happens to be easily the most powerful member of the team.
I pointed out a while back that Marvel tends to do this once every ten years or so. Reed “died” in 1994, I believe, and was back by 1996, so they’re pretty much right on schedule.
So if the FF had a line up of Black Panther, Storm, She Hulk and Luke Cage, would it still be the Fantastic Four? Or just a Fantastic Four? Can they keep changing members and keep the name, like The Temptations?
I’m in the midst of re-reading my FF collection (Vol. 1 29-299) and it is amazing how frequent someone quit the group or needed to be replaced. The Torch had left the FF when he found the Sub-Mariner, the Thing would up and quit for an issue or two every 15 issues or so during the early years, the Invisible Girl was replaced by Crystal when Sue got pregnant, Sue comes back only to quit shortly thereafter when Reed can’t handle her “liberated” attitude and then files for divorce when he puts Franklin in a coma to save the universe, Medusa replaces her (it’s interesting to note that no one knew what to do with ANY of the female members of the FF up until Byrne took over! Sue was next to useless for most of the first 200 issues, Crystal should have been the most powerful member but never did anything it seems, and Medusa’s power is pretty laughable when you think about it.) until Reed and Sue make up, Reed loses his powers and breaks up the group until he gets them back, whereupon Johnny leaves the group to attend college…
Well, that’s through issue 206 and I’ve probably forgotten something along the way. I should count up the number of issues that the original FF weren’t together. I’m betting it’s probably around 40%.
Confidential to both Marvel and DC: stop letting Michael Turner draw your covers when you have better artists doing the interiors.
Honestly, Paul Pelletier is one of those artist who can get me to pick up a book by himself. He’s certainly the better half of the rotation on Exiles, so I’m looking forward to this.
And yes, I agree that this “major change” is nothing new - but I still think it’ll be a nice little shake-up for a few issues…

That’s one of the things I loved about ‘Sergio Aragones Massacres Marvel’. They have an argument about the roster which says who’s turn it is to quit the team (the argument itself makes several of them want to quit the team). Eventually Doom shows up to declare he is quitting the Fantastic Four with the rest shouting; you’re not even on the team! Classic stuff.
Still, this could be a nice storyline for the time it’s gonna last.

Is it the one Gwen Stacy died on?
(Are there any other bridges in the marvel universe than that one?)

Add in McDuffie, and yeah, I’ll give this a shot.

Well, it’s got Ben Grimm in it, so it by definition at least has the *potential* to rock. And McDuffie’s almost always worth reading.

For those reading Civil War: Has Grimm at least confirmed for the record how revoltin’ these developments are?

So Black Panther, Storm, Human Torch and….. Robotman? Or is that Trap-Jaw? Yikes.
Seriously though, I like McDuffie’s work so I imagine it’ll be worth at least a look.

Thank god Turner isn’t doing the interior art as well. Sounds great, I don’t really enjoy Fantastic Four - but this got me interested.

This is after Civil War, right? So when does Silent War take place, since it’s got the regular FF lineup? Please pardon my ignorance.
