I couldn't read any of Bachalo's work on this title, but Ramos was okay on Wolverine. At least he doesn't go absolutely apeshit when asked to draw an action scene. I'll try reading this title again...

"I just wish the art wasn’t Bachelo and Ramos but someone a little more traditional. In the end I’m a story first, everything else second, art last sort of guy so I’m ok with it."

The art should tell the story, though. Which is why Bachallo on this book was a deal breaker on this book for me, and I avoid Ramos. I find Bachallo incoherent a lot of the time (I hated most of his work on New X-Men) and Ramos is too exagerated, as another guy pointed out, for my tastes. And I like exagerration. I'm far from a "all superhero comics should look as if they were drawn by Neal Adams in in 1972" kind of fan. But yeah, Ramos and Bachallo's work is too overboard for me.

"Some very good comics came out today. Like Onslaught: Reborn! Oh, I’m kidding. Seriously, I couldn’t even look at that comic long enough to make fun of it. It was painful to peruse for even a few seconds."

I almost bought the first issue, just to spite you, because you used it in your "don't buy this!" schtick. I was going to review it. But then I didn't. I probably remembered the splitting headache Youngblood #1 gave me, and I bought that for a nickel and thought $3 was too much for that kind of thing.

I bought Nextwave solely for that cover, and enjoyed it. (Otherwise, I'm waiting for the trade. And no, the hardcover doesn't count.)

I bought Onslaught: Reborn solely for research purposes, and it is not up to publishable standards. Seriously, if I were an editor, I'd have handed that script back to Jeph Loeb, and said, "Come back to me when you can explain, in clear and simple terms, exactly what the villain is doing. Because this--this is gibberish." Onslaught has no goal in mind (he's just EEEVIL and bad and nasty and has big teeth) and he has no motivation for any of his individual actions, either (he has all the powers of Charles Xavier and Magneto, but despite all that doesn't use his powers to, oh, I don't know, just kill everyone instead of slinking around in the background like a low-rent James Bond villain?)

There are more problems than just that--the dialogue is awful, it doesn't make any sense in the context of the original "Heroes Reborn" project, the art is painful to look at (seeing Liefeld art now is like watching an old 80s movie and looking at the fashions. It's not just ugly, it's also dated.) But it's so fundamentally bad at its conceptual core (ie, Onslaught himself and his total lack of depth) that fixing all the tons of superficial problems wouldn't help. And this, by the way, is coming from someone who actually has fond things to say about the original Onslaught crossover.

I second the goodness that was this weeks Spidey Hearts MJ. There's a hardcover of the first two MJ serieses and the first 5 or 6 issues of "Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane" coming out in March if you want to wait for that, Greg. I think it's like $16 right now if you pre-order from that giant book selling (and more) website.

I have to go back to the comics shoppe and ask about several DC titles. They mentioned that no store in Arizona got Batman this week, and they didn't get Jack of Fables or The Boys. I'm not sure if I'm going to buy Jack of Fables, but I'd like to see the resolution of The Boys storyline, which I assume resolves in this issue. For some reason, DC didn't like AZ this week, so we'll see about next week. As for Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane, does this mean I have to buy those stupid digest editions? I keep hearing nothing but good things about it, but I hate those stupid digest editions.

I used to like Ramos, back when he was drawing Impulse, but I haven't read any of his stuff for several years now. Looks like he's gotten even more stylized, and not in a good way. He did a cover for one of the Wolverine books a few months ago that had Wolverine's jaw hanging down to his belly button. It was grotesque.

Hey, Greg, did you read The Boys this week? It was quite enjoyable, with some good beatdowns. I don't know if you will get too turned off by the Ennis-isms (the cover is a hint), but I liked it.

Also, Jack of Fables and Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane were very good. Check out my blog for reviews (later today, hopefully).

Hey - Love the reviews every week, thought I'd comment for once:

I wholeheartedly agree about X-Men. Carey has pulled together the best X-team in ages, and he's managed to give each one of them a distinctive voice at the same time. Delightful. I'm also glad he dropped most of Rogue's awful, forced Southern accent. If he would just get rid of the "ah" instead of "I" now -- that drives me crazy.

Ramos' art could be better, and man, the boobs sometimes steal the show from the action, but I have to say: He draws some dead sexy guys, Cannonball and Iceman in particular.

"and if you like full frontal male nudity and lots of bloodshed, then this book’s for you!"

Looks like I've got another book to add to my pull list. Thanks for the recommendation!

There's nothing I'm more interested in at Marvel than Carey's X-Men run.

I just wish the art wasn't Bachelo and Ramos but someone a little more traditional. In the end I'm a story first, everything else second, art last sort of guy so I'm ok with it.

As for DD, I really do think that the next issue is going to make or break the story.

Yeah, Mad Monk will be the last Wagner Batman series for
a while. If he does another one in the future (and
probably will, he loves the character), it won't
necessarily be a sequel of the last two.

And I'll try to help you with the names of The Killer
(Le Tueur, on the original french) creative team. They
are writer Matz (he only signs as Matz, probably a
nickname) is a veteran crime comics writer who already
wrote a bunch of european series (at least one drawn by
Colin Wilson). Luc Jacamon is the artist and he has done
just a couple of series so far, both with Matz, The
Killer and the still-ongoing Cyclopes, about a futuristic
TV show that shows soldiers in real combat (imagine Cops
with mercenaries).

Oh, and The Killer was published in 5 44-page european
albuns, so each US edition is half of an european one.
Knowing your reading habits, you might want to read them
two at the time...

Archaia Studios is also publishing some other cool
eurocomics, like Okko and The Secret History.

Best,
Hunter (Pedro Bouça)

I thought Mad Monk was the end of BatWagner for a while.

Ramos's art grows on me more and more. Though he's suited to some things better than others. I like that cover, though.

Nextwave is the perfect Marvel comic.
