Snark Free Corner for 1/1
Welcome to the latest installment of your breath of snark free air!
Enjoy!
Let's look back at 2006 a bit - snark free style!
COOL COMIC THINGS
One of the many things I love about comics is the "surprise factor."
And I do not mean the whole "surprising plot" thing, as I personally am not a big fan of surprises in comics, as quite often, when things are surprises in comic book plots, it usually means that the writer is trying something that does not exactly make sense, in the hope of surprising the reader.
No, the comic book surprises that I like are like when a writer like Denise Mina starts on a book like Hellblazer, and does a fabulous job, when I am not expecting anything in particular from her (as I was unfamiliar with her work, and even if I was familiar with her non-comic work, good non-comic work does not necessarily translate into good comic work).
Or rather, someone like CP Smith, whose work I was never a fan of, but he has slowly evolved his style (particularly this year) to the point where he is now an artist that I eagerly await new work from.
Until you open up a comic book, you never really know for sure what the comic book will be like.
You don't have to be a fan of Geoff Johns to appreciate the coolness of Miss Martian. It was a really neat surprise how cool Miss Martian was.
Probably the neatest surprise of 2006, for me, were the back-ups in Doc Samson by Zeb Wells and Frank Espinosa earlier this year. I was totally unaware of their existence, and man, were they good!
Zeb Wells' story about the Living Totem were funny, and Espinosa (he draws Rocketo for Image) is just an amazing artist. And to find this awesomeness in a back-up in Doc Samson mini-series?
Talk about awesome surprises!!!
COVER THEME GAME
As always, here is the game. I show three covers. They all have something in common, whether it be a character, a trait all three characters share, locale, creator, SOMEthing. And it isn't something obvious like "They all have prices!" "They all have logos!" "They all feature a man!" etc.
In addition, please note that you must have some familiarity with comic book history to correctly guess these comics. You cannot guess the connective theme just by looking at the covers solely, you must have some knowledge beyond just the covers.
Good luck! A cool point to the first one who figures it out!

Which new title that came out in 2006 do you think was the best?
COVER HOMAGE
Phonogram was a new release in 2006 that I was totally free of snark for.
One cool point to the first person who can tell me which album cover this Phonogram cover is homaging!

Remember, tell me who it is and what number clue gave it away!

The answer to your Who is It is Kate Spencer.
The first clue gave it away, actually. Her connection to the Darkstars is her costume, which is a Darkstars uniform.
And she joined the Birds of Prey this year as well, which is a good fit for her (although I hear she was originally going to be a member of the new Justice League).

The Thing's guest stars are channeling Scott Stapp, with their arms wide open and such.
As for best new title, I'm agreeing with Entertainment Weekly with The All-New Atom.

Best new series of the year:
Probably Casanova. Did DMZ start in 2006, or late 2005? What about Testament? I liked both of those, and DMZ would be a contender, but I think it was '05. Also close: Nextwave. Oh, and if you count miniseries(es), Agents of Atlas and Dr. Strange: The Oath are very good. But I think I'll have to go with Casanova.

Im very late answering these, but I'm going to answer them anyway without looking:
Cover Theme:All the characters teaming up with The Thing died or were dead in 2006 books.
Snark Free Challange: Hmm...Jack of Fables or The Nightly News. And although I dont think it's the best, I'm still really enjoying 52.
Cover Homage: It's friggen Oasis but I forget which album (which is a sad thing for me to forget due to the fact I'm a former music critic).
Who is it?: Up until that last clue I thought it was Donna Troy. She had some sort of relation to the Darkstars, she was married, she is female, and a new 2006 team...does he space heroes count? But I never remember her being a defense attorney. Im not sure now.
Ok, I just peaked at the posts above...friggen Kate Spencer...

Quasar wasn't a scientist.
In addition to the above, all three guest-stars in the 2-in-1s had adopted someone else's name/identity. (although the great beast Sasquatch wasn't revealed until after the 2-in-1 story.)

i'm going to say, all three two-in-one guests had to have character logos created specifically for these covers, because they didn't have 'em already.
