Ace - I heard that it was a pretty good issue. I might have to read it at the store and see. Of course, with the advent of trades, if I keep hearing good things about it, I can buy it when it's collected. It's a safety net!

Boy, you picked a bad time to drop Jack of Fables. This week's issue gives signs that Willingham may just be able to have it match the standards he set for himself on Fables.
Here's what I thought of it:

Jack of Fables #6
EXCELLENT. A bit of tongue-in-cheek self-deprecation by Willingham and Sturges breaks up this tale told by Jack to his new companions Pecos Bill, John Henry, and Alice, on how he was once Jack Frost. So not only was he Jack Horner, Jack the Giant Killer, Jack of the Beanstalk, Jack-Be-Nimble, Jack of the Lantern, and the Jack from Jack and Jill, but now also Jack Frost, apparently. Anyways, what good would an issue of this title be without a hot babe? And here we have the coolest of all hotties: Lumi the Snow Queen. And of course, Jack got with her. I was wondering whether Willingham could produce monthly with this title, but so far, it seems to be living up to the standards he's set for himself in Fables.

As always, there's more at my blog.

Bullet Points is okay. The artwork is the best part of it, and uses light very well. The writing's a little clunky sometimes and the narration can get masturbatory, but the plotting is done well, and it's a fun read for anybody who grew up a Marvel fan.

You didn't miss much in Scalped. It's a clunkier Other Side with a much worse artist than Cameron Stewart with plenty more unnecessary vulgarities. I'm not that hot on Jason Aaron.

I dont know what all the fuss is about the boys. People either love it or hate it. I read anything Garth Ennis does. I know it will have high violence and pretty sick humour, but hey that appeals to me. I have not read issue 6 as i live in Africa and it has not arrived yet but i cant see how Butchers explanation has to be Garth explanation, afterall he is only a character and was never meant to Garths alterego...or whatever.

Though the old man left, The Chronovore was still in the restaurant. Only we can't see it, nor can Superman because " 5-D vision only entered our bloodline in the 67th Century"

Well, there are those of us that DID praise We3, NewXmeN, and his other strongest works just as highly. I think what's going on here is that ASS is more accessible to more people, the kind of folks who shut down their brains upon most Morrison work. So there are just more people giving the lauds. To me, ASS takes the formal mastery and experimentation of We3 and attaches it to broader themes and mythological impact.

Shucks, *I* like All-star Superman because it's a good Superman book. I'm with everybody that far. I assure you all I'm delighted to see a fun Superman book I can hand to pretty much ANYONE that's self-contained and smart and doesn't require years of Fanboy Training Camp to get through. That's not what I am wondering.

I guess I'm baffled because "good Superman book" doesn't seem like enough to get the complete swooning raves it gets. To take the closest example, "best ongoing out there"? Period? Not even a LITTLE qualifier like "best superhero title" or "best from the Big Two"? I see this around here all the time and my first response is always to think Huh? Why didn't we hear this about Doom Patrol, or there's We3, there's all the other Vertigo material, there's even New X-Men... but this book is just a fun little love letter to the Silver Age. It seems a bit fluffy to be getting all the accolades it's getting considering the other, generally better and more demanding work from the guys involved that's been out there.

Yeah, I forgot about the drug Hughie took. My bad.

Kevin, make fun all you want! My retailer is probably more like that guy than not, because he barely knows about anything that's from Dark Horse, much less something from back in the book. But he will order anything you want, which is why he's a good businessman, even if he's kind of a less-than-eclectic reader.

The aging guy in the diner had already passed by the window by the time Lana took the picture. That's what bugged me.

The photo shows the man in the diner who walks outside the window who was aging as he went.

Yep, but I suppose Morrison or Quitely could have made that more clear.

Another great issue from the best ongoing series out there!

Was the hamster up someone's bum? I mean, it's Ennis...

Can't wait to read ASS, myself. Next week. Yes.... Must hold on...

I think the Other Side is pretty good. The art is beautiful. Your mileage may vary.

I don't think this will change your mind about the series, but I think the reason Hugie was able to punch through the guy was due to the injection of compound v in issue 4, which is the stuff the Boys use in order to be able to fight the supes without getting completely stomped.

The big problem with The Boys (#6, not #7, btw) was that when Hughie asks the 'why do you Hate superheroes' question to Butcher, the expectation is that Butcher is going to, by speaking as a proxy for Ennis, justify the entire project.

And, of course, the answer fails so utterly to deliver in those terms on any logical, literal, or metaphorical level, which leaves the entire series cut off at the knees...
