Snark Free Corner for 1/15

Welcome to the latest installment of your breath of snark free air!

Enjoy!

COOL COMIC THINGS

Gail Simone jogged my memory of these things the other day, and it reminded me of how neat micro versions of comic book characters are.

It is such an odd, internet-specific thing, and yet, I can't get enough of them!

It just amazes me that there are fans out there who are so into their favorite comics, that they will create micro-heroes for them, even for the most obscure comics out there.

For instance, micro-heroes for Marvel: The Lost Generation....

The Blood Syndicate...

The Avengers analogues from Justice League of America...

Clan Destine....

It is such a neat aspect of fandom. A cool comic thing.

COVER THEME GAME

As always, here is the game. I show three covers. They all have something in common, whether it be a character, a trait all three characters share, locale, creator, SOMEthing. And it isn't something obvious like "They all have prices!" "They all have logos!" "They all feature a man!" etc.

In addition, please note that you must have some familiarity with comic book history to correctly guess these comics. You cannot guess the connective theme just by looking at the covers solely, you must have some knowledge beyond just the covers.

Good luck! A cool point to the first one who figures it out!

SNARK FREE CHALLENGE

Which member of the Fantastic Four would you most want to babysit your children?

COVER HOMAGE

This Kerry Gammill Superman cover might very well NOT be an homage of a previous Superman cover, but there's a cover out there (HUGE HINT - It's an issue of either Action Comics or Superman, ending in 00) that this cover reminds me of so much that I think it probably was meant as an homage.

One cool point to the first person who can tell me which cover I am referring to!

The covers all feature villains killed by Scourge.

As for babysitting, I'd guess The Thing - if it were Penthouse Forum babysitting, however, it'd be Sue.

Cover homage:

Do you mean the cover for Action Comics 300 where Superman's the last man on earth? They are pretty similar.

Sue or The Thing are really the only plausible choices. You're not gonna have a notorious playboy or a nutty professor babysit your kid.

Dangit, I finally get a cover theme I recognize (Death Adder, the Enforcer, and Mirage were all victims of Scourge), and someone beats me to it!

Sue's obviously the only worthwhile babysitter in the FF; heck, it could be argued that she babysits Reed, Ben and Johnny.

And while I don't recognize the homage, it'd fit perfectly in at superdickery.com; I can even see the caption. "This doesn't mean he didn't do it; it just means that this time he's trying to pin it on someone else."

Uh, is anyone crazy enough to want someone other than Sue babysitting your kid?

Actually, I suppose I'd pick Crystal. She has more experience with the babysitting and all.

I think the mystery character is Nemesis aka Tom Tresser.

The character in question in Nemesis. 2 gave me the idea, and 5 confirmed it for me.

I'd leave my kids with Ghostrider. Why? Because I'm a bad father.

Hmmmmm. I originally thought that Ben Grim would be a great baby sitter (my 4 year old can be pretty destructive!) but I'm leaning towards Reed Richards. I mean, he is a fort, a trampoline, silly putty, the man of 1000 faces, Mr. Wizard, and many more all rolled into one. Although, Luke Cage would be good, just so my kids could walk around saying "Sweet Christmas" after he left. I've tried to teach it to them and it just won't stick!

Betty Brant is a correct answer after the first two clues.

Any chance of a more DC-centric cover challenge some time? I don't know nearly enough Marvel history to have a chance in any of these

Look no further than the 12/4 edition, which no one has correctly guessed yet!

Here's a link to it -

Thanks to sterg for correcting me (I originally said 12/18).

Brian, I think you mean the 12/4 Snark Free Corner.

My Guess for that theme is famous firsts:
Nightwing (first boy sidekick, as Robin)
JSA (first superteam)
Superman (first superhero)

superhero*

Since Cronin wrote this, I'm going to guess that the answer to all of these is "John Byrne sucks." Even the ones that weren't questions.

For what it's worth, I got the Scourge thing too, but was beaten to the punch several times over... :(

If Franklin Richards: Son of a Genius has proven nothing else, it's that the only babysitter worth beans in the Baxter Building is H.E.R.B.I.E.

Dang. Everybody else on this board beat me to the Scourge theme and the Sue-Storm-as-hot-babysitter comments.

I thought the "Who is it?" character was Nightshade until question 4. I loved Nemesis in SUICIDE SQUAD, but had no idea questions 2, 4 and 5 applied to him.

"Look no further than the 12/4 edition, which no one has correctly guessed yet!"

Thanks! Unfortunately I haven't got a clue what the answer is
