Judging (DC’s April) Books By Their Covers
Thursday, January 18th, 2007 at 4:11 AM EST
Updated: Thursday, January 18th, 2007 at 4:15 AM EST
DC’s April Solicitations are up, so now is as good a time as any for us to make prejudgments based just on the covers (as we all love to make prejudgments, don’t we?).
Let’s begin!
___________________________________________________
Nice JG Jones cover for 52.
Montoya as the new Question (as I presume this cover is showing us) is a decent idea. I will give Rucka some props for that.
___________________________________________________
Nice drawing by Joshua Middleton for this American Virgin cover, but I don’t think it grabs the reader’s attention as much as it probably should.
As a stand-alone piece, though, I think it is lovely.
___________________________________________________
You see, this Rick Veitch Army@Love cover is just the sort of ridiculousness that other comic book covers present withOUT the clear parody that Veitch is going for, which is pretty darn sad, to me.
A funny cover.
___________________________________________________
This is practically the same exact concept (right down to the teeth flying out of the guy’s mouth) that Phil Hester did for an Ant Man cover a few months back.
That’s surprisingly unoriginal from Ladronn, although Ladronn does a better job with the idea than Hester did, as Ladronn puts a little more pizazz into his cover.

___________________________________________________
Pretty cool George Perez cover for the Brave and the Bold, and the idea of Batman and Blue Beetle versus the Fatal Five is just one of those nifty ideas that you don’t see as much of nowadays.

___________________________________________________
Funny Cully Hamner Blue Beetle cover.
I dig Hamner’s take on Guy Gardner.
___________________________________________________
This Whilce Portacio Batman Confidential cover is JUST wacky enough for me to actually recommend it.

___________________________________________________
While there is a lot of nice things going on with Andy Kubert’s artwork here (particularly some of the detail work), I don’t think it is an overall very appealing cover.
In fact, my pal Cayman remarked to me that he was going to ask his local store if they could wrap it in brown paper when he purchases his copy.
___________________________________________________
Fairly pedestrian Batman Strikes cover by Sanford Green.
Not bad, though.
___________________________________________________
Stephane Roux’s unique perspectives have left me cold the last two Birds of Prey covers, as they ended up looking out of whack (especially the one from two months ago).
This cover is a significant improvement in that regard, as the battle here seems to proceed with a great deal of consistency and logical body movements.
___________________________________________________
Darick Robertson seems to be intentionally going for subdued with his Boys covers.
I don’t think it’s the right way to go, myself.
___________________________________________________
Not a bad Robert Pope drawing for this Cartoon Network Block Party cover, but again, there is no integration of the other featured characters.
I do not like that.
___________________________________________________
This Dan Davis Cartoon Network Action Pack has an even stronger cover drawing, but again, it’s the standard, routine “tack on a couple of circles for the back-up characters” bit that I am not a fan of at all.
Do you think that’s an editorial mandate, or an artistic decision?
___________________________________________________
Decent Adam Hughes Catwoman cover, although more than a bit disjointed to me.

___________________________________________________
Another strong Connor Hawke cover by Derec Donovan, but I think it is a bit of a letdown when the PENULTIMATE issue’s cover has Connor Hawke faced off against a giant dragon, and now he’s against one tiny dude.

___________________________________________________
It is so strange to see Matthew Clark handling the Checkmate characters.
It’s like Ed Benes doing an issue of Queen and Country…you are not used to seeing these Jesus Saiz portrayed characters drawn this way.
___________________________________________________
Decent John Watkiss Deadman cover.
The image looks very familiar. Is it an homage to anything?

___________________________________________________
VERY standard cover idea, but Paul Gulacy pulls it off nicely. I think he’ll be good on a character without a face, as Gulacy’s faces have looked a bit off ever since he became the regular Catwoman artist a couple of years ago.

___________________________________________________
Nick Bradshaw reminds me of J. Scott Campbell, in the sense that both guys can be quite creative with their layouts and designs…I just wish they worked on some better projects.

___________________________________________________
How freaking creepy is seeing Harley Quinn drawn sorta sexy-like?

___________________________________________________
Question - does this cover have to do with the story in this issue?

___________________________________________________
Wow, Philip Bond missed out on a career opportunity!
Forget Exterminators covers, he could make do just illustrating letters to Penthouse!
___________________________________________________
Nice James Jean drawing, but not much of a cover.
Is this really the actual cover?
___________________________________________________
I wonder what the research into this cover was like.
“Why’s Mr. Van Sciver laying down below all those dudes? Is he in trouble?”
“Don’t worry, kids, it’s all for perspective!!”
___________________________________________________
Very nice design by Scott McDaniel.

___________________________________________________
Not a fan of this Talent Caldwell cover.
Especially everyone’s waists…damn, those are some crazy looking waists there.
___________________________________________________
Nice Patrick Gleason Green Lantern Corps cover.
He certainly knows how to draw some manic covers.
___________________________________________________
Aw man, what is Ivan Reis doing?!!?
Her ass isn’t even on the cover!!!!!!!
Poor form, Mr. Reis.
___________________________________________________
Interesting design work by Ryan Benjamin for this Grifter and Midnighter cover.

___________________________________________________
Pretty standard looking Phil Noto Jonah Hex cover.
___________________________________________________
FINALLY!
A reason to use the Batman costume with bat nipples!

___________________________________________________
What’s the verdict on Howard Porter’s new art style?
I think it is ultimately an improvement.
And man, it is great to see Kid Amazo finally!

___________________________________________________
How funny is it when Batman is in a room and he’s like, “Wow, my costume looks downright ordinary when I’m with a dude covered all in stars and another dude with a big T on his face.”
Seems a bit early for JLA/JSA crossovers.
___________________________________________________
Good to see Dennis Calero getting some work. He’s a good artist who was cursed with having to ape Sook and to draw stupid big-head-wolf character in X-Factor.
This Steve Uy cover for the JSA Classified issue is pretty good.

___________________________________________________
Here’s a question…shouldn’t the Alex Ross “character pose” covers be the VARIANT covers?
Why are Dale Eaglesham’s story appropriate covers the variants?

___________________________________________________
“WONDER TWINS POWERS, ACTIVATE!!!”
“Form of a martini!”
“Form of a”…
Okay, I was just doing a “Hal Jordan is a drunk” joke. I don’t have any animal jokes with Sinestro.
By the way, please note that I am NOT saying that comics should be filled with “Hal is a drunk” jokes. I think that would be silly.
HOWEVER, I think it is pretty lame that a writer comes up with a bad idea involving Hank Pym, and that becomes grafted into his characterization from then on, but a writer comes up with a bad idea involving Hal Jordan, and that just gets dropped like the bad idea it was!
EQUAL REPRESENTATION, COMIC BOOK WRITERS!!
___________________________________________________
Nice enough drawings by Steve Uy for this new Legion cartoon comic book, but the cover layout is pretty poor.

___________________________________________________
Very strong Scott Gross cover.
He takes an interesting enough concept and executes it in a very dynamic manner.

___________________________________________________
Good Frusin cover.
I am beginning to sour on Loveless a bit. The Frusin covers are generally my favorite part of the comic.
___________________________________________________
This is the last issue of Manhunter.
With that in mind, I can’t be the only one who looks at this cover and hears George saying, “Look across the river. Describe the farm to me,” can I?

___________________________________________________
Wow, finally, an even lamer costume than the one Midnighter already has….

___________________________________________________
Now that Jonboy Meyers finally is drawing Ninja Scroll interiors, he ISN’T doing the cover! High-larious!

___________________________________________________
Freddy Kruegger covers must be fun to come up with cover ideas for. Not like Texas Chainsaw Massacre covers.

___________________________________________________
This image for this Nightwing Annual cover looks awfully familiar.

___________________________________________________
Heck, so does this Nightwing cover…weird.

___________________________________________________
Duncan Rouleau is such a dynamic artist!
What I don’t get is…I thought the current Outsiders storyline was explaining why the Outsiders are “dead,” so why the Annual as well?
Unless it’s part of the storyline going on in the title…that would be fine.
___________________________________________________
Very nice design for the first Minx book.
Attractive enough look to sorta stand out, while still looking like a traditional paperback.
___________________________________________________
Nice Red Menace cover by Jerry Ordway.

___________________________________________________
Jock is back!
I figured last month’s poor showing was an aberration, and it was!
Fine, fine cover.
___________________________________________________
Standard enough idea, but a funny one, and one Alexander Serra draws well.
I wonder, did Alexander Serra come up with the idea himself?
___________________________________________________
I was going to make a joke about DC finally doing a comic book about menstruation.

But I was informed that that would be too creepy.
So moving on!
___________________________________________________
Pretty decent Barry Kitson Legion cover.
___________________________________________________
Hey, you know how some people say that listening to a band perform in reverse can sometimes give you really trippy results?
Well, that is not true for REM.
REM reversed is lame.
___________________________________________________
I continue to be impressed by how strong Tom Derenick’s artwork has become.
He’s quickly become one of the strongest artists working for DC right now (not sure if that’s necessarily a compliment to Mr. Derenick or a shot at DC…I am leaning towards a compliment).

___________________________________________________
Wow…maybe Tim Bradstreet SHOULD just stick to photo manipulation.

___________________________________________________
This Superman Confidential bit by Tim Sale is well drawn and all, but it doesn’t seem like much of a cover image.
Is this actually the cover?

___________________________________________________
Hey, check this out…look how much like Doug Mahnke Patrick Gleason’s art looks at times!
I believe someone told me Gleason was Mahnke’s assistant at one point. Did I imagine that? That makes a lot of sense, if true.
___________________________________________________
See what I mean about Texas Chainsaw Massacre?
Darick Robertson is clearly trying his damndest, and the work with the girl on the cover is top-rate, but come on, not much interesting things going on with a Texas Chainsaw Massacre cover.

___________________________________________________
Good Liam Sharp cover for Testament. I think Sharp is trying a bit of a different style…his edges seem a bit looser…I like it.

___________________________________________________
Take away the goatee, and I will approve this Art Adams cover.

___________________________________________________
Nice Neil Googe Tranquility cover.
The contrast is clever.

___________________________________________________
My pal Stony doesn’t think anyone will get the Manhunter joke. But I have faith in you all!!
___________________________________________________
I take it that the effect is supposed to be that the Superboy clone is flaking apart?

It does not work very well.
___________________________________________________
Good cover layout by Todd Nauck for Teen Titans Go.

___________________________________________________
“EXPLAIN HOW AWESOME YOU ARE TO THE READERS OUT THERE THAT DON’T KNOW YOU!”
Hey, has Drew Johnson BEEN the regular Wonder Woman artist before?
___________________________________________________
I think Wonder Woman would be pretty darn cool if she was a skeleton.
We’ve had blue skinned Superman.
We’ve had homicidal Hal Jordan.
We’ve had Walter West.
We’ve had Az-Bats.
I think the world is ready for Skeleton Wonder Woman!!
___________________________________________________
Very nice Massimo Carnevale cover for Y the Last Man.

___________________________________________________
HONORABLE MENTIONS
___________________________________________________
PETE WOODS CORNER!
First, a nifty cover design for Firestorm.
I love his use of the black creatures throughout the cover.
Next, we have a really classic feel with his Amazons Attack cover.
The frame is a nice touch.
And the way he fills the whole frame…it gives their attack formation so much more power.
What a nice job of composition.
___________________________________________________
Ryan Sook continues his very strong work (with a very limited palette) on Friday the 13th covers.

___________________________________________________
Zach Howard should be getting more work.
He is a good artist.
___________________________________________________
Possibly the strongest cover work I’ve seen from the Dodsons…

___________________________________________________
Very good Dave Johnson cover, following the same formula as this month’s Y the Last Man cover, only doing it with a little more pizazz.

___________________________________________________
Very trippy, but very good, JH Williams Crossing Midnight cover.

___________________________________________________
TOP FIVE!!
___________________________________________________
5. Very wacky, but still quite strong, Spirit cover by Cooke, who I love.

___________________________________________________
4. I’d have this Smith cover higher, but I think that Captain Marvel seems a bit too detached from the creatures surrounding him.
Still, it’s a very striking cover.
___________________________________________________
3. Very clever design idea by Michael Wm. Kaluta for this Aquaman cover…
And his execution of the idea is impeccable.
___________________________________________________
2. First off, I am pleased to see Brian Wood use the full cover. I was not a fan of the half-cover thing DMZ has had for a lot of covers.
This is a strong cover at first glance that gets better the more you look at it.
Great job of design by Wood.
___________________________________________________
1. Photo-realistic covers get a bad name because they’re usually done poorly, with not a lot of imagination.
This is done well, with a lot of imagination.
Lee Bermejo rules!
___________________________________________________
Well, that’s it for me! Feel free to share YOUR prejudices (and your top fives)!!

I don’t understand you Cronin. The cover to Shazam: Monster Society of Evil #2 was frakking amazing, had great composition, was charming and funny as all get out, and frankly was a cover image so strong that it made me whoop aloud at work because it so captured in a single image the tone of Captain Marvel that has eluded DC in the past few years…and you said it was underwhelming. But this one for S:MSoE #3, which is bog-standard superhero pose and some monstres and you even admit doesn’t entirely work makes the top five!
Your moods and aesthetic taste are a complete mystery to me.

I think that Deadman cover is a riff on the movie poster for Shattered Glass, the film about a journalist who turns to the dark side.

The Manhunter joke is from “Of Mice and Men.” I take it you think the Manhunter chick is going the way of the Dodo?

I love the Judging Books By Their Covers feature. It’s probably my favorite recurring “column” on this blog.
Thanks for your insights and opinions!

I didn’t get the Manhunter joke. I think it’s been pretty clearly established that I’m a moron. Also, were you listening to REM in the middle of doing this? Why the reference?
Haven’t the Dodsons drawn Harley Quinn looking sexy on a cover before? I seem to recall that …

Unfortunately, none of the covers feature Batman wrestling with a gorilla with a bomb strapped to its chest.
Seriously, man, ever since I saw that thing in “Showcase Presents Batman”, no other cover has measured up. It has Batman, it has the gorilla, it has the bomb, and it has Robin shouting, “Don’t drop that gorilla, Batman!” What more do you need?

Derenick’s work of late has been awesome. If you check his MySpace, you can see the progression of his work. I’m looking forward to see his World War 3 stuff.

Pollack Doom Patrol, man. All I’m gonna say.

Harley’s *always* been slightly sexualized. Remember her outfit in the “Harley and Ivy” episode?

I always like reading this column. I would like to see it expanded to Image/Dark Horse covers, at least as a try-out some month.

One mistake on that Daffy Duck cover. That paper would get caught under his feet the way he’s trying to unroll it. It should be unrolling off the bottom. Great looking cover anyway.

Dude, the 100 Bullets cover is an obvious hommage to Roman Holiday, the Audrey Hepburn movie.

“Are you there, Rao? It’s me, Kara.”
As far as the “Of Mice and Men” joke goes, given Kate’s spot on the Birds of Prey, I don’t think a pine box is in her immediate future. I get more of a “second star to the right, and straight on ’til morning” vibe from that cover.

I love the Spirit cover. Cooke’s just channelling and giving a little more of umph!
And the Amazons Attack cover is dynamite. I love Pete Woods!

I’m likely very much in the minority, but I’m psyched that Rene’s the next Question.
Also, I think The Spirit cover is my favorite of the bunch.

A couple comments:
1. The Amazons Attack cover does do one screwy thing that puts me off. It’s something Erik Larsen mentioned a few times, and now gets stuck in my craw, too. The background Amazon (Wonder Woman?) is breaking the border with her spear, while the foreground amazon is not. That makes the perspective all wonky. The border should act as a window, and to work in this way, it would have to be a weird misshapen window.
2. Harley IS usually sexy, but this Harley looks dreakdul. I really can’t stand this artist’s covers (I can’t read the sig, so I forget who it is). Everyone looks… I don’t know. Ugly and screwed up. I guess I’m the only one, though.
3. I got the joke. And you were right, George says it to Lenny. Anthony is mistaken.

How can a Wonder Woman bondage cover not rank #1?
Ian Astheimer
January 18, 2007 at 1:41 pm
Gleason assisted Mahnke on Superman: Man of Steel.
The last time I saw anything by Derenick was during Casey’s run on Uncanny X-Men. His pages in #399 looked as rushed as they probably were. So, that Shadowpact cover is a revelation.
And, the cover to Batman Confidential #2 might just be Portacio’s best work ever. It’s certainly the first time I’ve seen him draw a realistic human being in a long time.

January 18, 2007 at 1:41 pm
Er…Batman Confidential #5, that is.

I believe it’s a homage to the Straw Dogs poster art.

Kinda lame that Jodi Picoult’s Wonder Woman arc seems so continuity heavy for an outside writer.
Brian Cronin
January 18, 2007 at 5:14 pm
I bet that’s why she apparently is only doing one arc.
“Hey, let’s get a famous novelist to write Wonder Woman! Oh, but make sure she follows the previous writer’s arc fully!”
So silly.

January 18, 2007 at 6:23 pm
Harley not sexy? Wasn’t she begging Joker in Mad Love to ride his Harley (or did I dream that?)?
Got the Manhunter joke (BA in English Burgas? Did you read any of the books on the syllabus?), missed the REM joke (or is it just supposed to be a bit of absurd nonsense?).
Greg Burgas
January 18, 2007 at 6:34 pm
Veghead - I have read one Steinbeck book (The Short Reign of Pippin IV). I’ve read War and Peace, though! And Wuthering Heights, - good stuff! And I love Heart of Darkness! These semi-modern Americans, though - Steinbeck, Faulkner, Hemingway, Fitzgerald - for some reason, I just don’t get into them. The Great Gatsby? Blech. Some Hemingway is okay. But I can discuss DeLillo’s White Noise like nobody’s business!
Bill Reed
January 18, 2007 at 6:44 pm
You’re right, Greg. The Great Gatsby does suck.
But Heart of Darkness sucks, too.
veghead
January 18, 2007 at 7:57 pm
Gatsby doesn’t do much for me, Faulkner intentionally obscures his meaning rather than writing clearly–what’s up with that?–for me it’s painful, Hemingway’s style is of the gods, but he’s such a boob that I can’t stand to read him. However, you should give Steinbeck another chance. Try Tortilla Flat or Cannery Row.
I though White Noise was ok.

Pat Gleason was, in fact, Doug Mahnke’s sidekick for a few years. I think he drew his first couple issues of Noble Causes in Doug’s studio.

I think Howard Chaykin is pulling a Wally Wood on Hawkgirl. Her breasts on that cover are the most ugly porn boobs I’ve ever seen outside of, well, real ugly porn boobs. Perfectly circular.
I like Tom Derenick’s work now too, (especially compared to his older work) but I’m not fond of his Blue Devil. He makes BD too big and muscular.
I really don’t like Captain Marvel’s face on the Jeff Smith cover. And, whoa, I just noticed Captain Marvel’s deformed right wrist. Loosen the sleeves on Captain Marvel! You’re going to cut off his blood flow, and he’s going to lose his right hand. Oh, God, no! They’re going to give him a hook.
Burgas has a BA in English, but didn’t get the Of Mice and Men reference? For shame.
Also, Harley is not sexy on that cover. In fact, it’s probably one of the ugliest Harley’s I’ve seen.
That JLU cover is awesome, if a bit sporadic with the colors. I’d like to see more covers like that on the regular Justice League book. Maybe that’s part of the reason I like the Brave and the Bold cover so much. It’s a fun mix of characters that’s filled with energy.

The Deadman cover looks very Sienkiewicz like to me…
Brian Cronin
January 19, 2007 at 12:44 am
This month was a worse month for DC covers, so a weaker cover managed to make the Top Five.
In a weaker month, the cover for #2 would have made it.

I just thought it’d be appropriate with this being the end of the book and all.

January 19, 2007 at 12:47 am
Mysterious ways…
They drew her with gigantic breasts, but I think they always had her as wacky instead of sexy.
Alex Ross’ cover that introduced her, I think, would be an exception to the sexy rule, and that cover freaked me out, too.
Brian Cronin

Yeah, I guess I’m looking at it more as “I guess it won’t be THAT bad.”
Brian Cronin

Wow, GREAT pick up, Mark!!
Scott Gross, do you feel chagrined?
But yes, still a great cover, but that is a significant mess-up.
Brian Cronin
January 19, 2007 at 12:54 am
I’ve done Image before, Ian, but it’s tough - way too much effort goes into doing these things (with formatting, etc.), so I dunno if I can find the time.
I’ll try, though! I’d LIKE to do one for each.
Punch
January 19, 2007 at 1:42 am
That is probably the least sexy picture of Harley that I’ve seen.
but COME ON MAN, that Art Adams cover deserves to be #1. The goatee is not his choice.
Alun Clewe
January 19, 2007 at 2:29 am
No, it’s not (a mess-up, that is; I’m not disputing the “great cover” part)–actually, the way the tape roll is drawn is correct. It would be awkward to unroll it that way, since the bottom of the roll would have to be moving forward so it would be pushed rather than rolled, but it would be possible (actually, the pressure of Daffy’s feet would help unroll it if he stepped on the part near the roll). Having the tape unroll from the bottom would be a mistake, because it would mean the roll tape would have to be sticky on the outside–which isn’t how tape works. Go ahead and try it with a roll of (single-sided) tape (well, pushing it with your finger, I guess, unless you can find a roll of tape as large as the one Daffy has)–the way it’s drawn, awkward though it may be, is about the only way it can be done.

I read more Marvel, but I think DC usually has the better covers. This is kind of weak month for DC though, eh?
Top 5: Spirit, Looney Tunes, Scooby Doo, Scalped, Loveless
Strange mix of cartoony and dark covers.
Honorable Mention: Exterminators, Tranquility, Legion, DMZ, Crossing Midnight
Captain Marvel (should have been on the top of the stack, but just a little wrong in execution)
The perspective on the BOP cover is pretty goofy. I haven’t been paying close attention, but you’re saying this is better? Hmmm? Catwoman is a little too “colorforms” for my tastes, but Holly looking straight at the reader helps draw you in. Supergirl= What the hell? Decent execution, but really?

As for the Cartoon Network covers, I like the approach of having the backup features set off separately in circles or whatever. It’s striking enough and it beats the alternatives of ignoring the backup characters altogether or trying to integrate the images and ending up with something confusing to the kids picking up the comic (”But Character X and Character Y are in the same story! It says so on the cover!”).

Morrison actually covered the menstruation territory in Doom Patrol before Pollack did. I think it was in issue #25. “Nobody told me about the blood!” And the red shoes. Yikes.
Good reference on that one, by the way, Tom Foss. Made me smile.
I don’t remember Phil Hester’s Ant Man cover, but I’ll remember this Atom one. That’s some freaky shit, with the zombie’s face flying all over the place. Yuck.
That Jonah Hex cover has a similar thing going on as the cover to Grifter/Midnighter #1. Weird.
Cronin, I don’t know what you’re smoking to say the Fables cover sucks. That is one beautiful image in my opinion. I assume the issue is about Flycatcher, who we learned recently is a very tragic character. I think it captures his dignity and sadness very well.
You think Midnighter’s costume is lame? I mean, it’s nothing mindblowingly good, but it’s sufficient. No weirder than most spandex-type costumes. Huh.
I dig that Crossing Midnight cover. It’s pretty damn freaky. I’m still trying to figure out what’s going on with that werewolf. Has his head been cut off and strapped to his chest? Creepy!

I’ve got to agree that the Watkiss Deadman cover looks like a nod to Straw Dogs, but channeled through Matt Wagner. I had to do a double-take to make sure that “W” at the bottom didn’t have an “M” on top of it…
Cooke’s Spirit wins the month for me hands down (I think I’ve got to get used to that happening!) while the Manhunter swan song seems strangely reminiscent of one of the last Starman covers (and they’re both JSA kids - hmmmm).
"O" the Humanatee!

Holy crap, is that Chloe Sullivan on the Catwoman cover?
