Getting into the con was hopelessly confused, although the herders did their best. This was the first one I had been to, so I can't compare, although I thought there was a pretty good balance. Some of the guys I hung out with who go to every one said it's gotten a lot better, and this one was the best yet. So that's something!

After going to the Phoenix Comic-Con last September and having a boring ol' time, I decided to give this one a pass and join my roommate on a trip to LA. It sounds like this time it was a little more balanced between western comics and manga, which is good, and I hope the space wasn't too small.

I took my 9 year old son on the first day and we had a blast! The turn out was great and there were a good variety of creators. We caught the first half of the "Kid Stuff" panel, which had James Owen and Todd Nauck in attendance. It was nice to see how well they interacted with the kids in the audience. And I'm with Mike too-Len Wein=Swamp Thing. Who is that short hairy mutant?

I meant book distributors, not book publishers. My bad.

Congress DID look into Diamond's monopoly back when they started it (1996), and found it completely legal.

Comics are considered periodicals, hence they can be distributed through any newsstand distribution company in the world, if the publisher so chooses. It's not Diamond's fault that the publishers choose not to. And there are a number of book publishers out there to cover TPBs / HCs.

So by the technical letter of the law, Diamond gets away with it, because they are not preventing any publisher from using any other distribution group technically. It's the publisher's faults for not diversifying their distribution chains, and the retailers' faults for being unwilling to utilize other channels as well.
