I worked with Bob McLeod a few years back as an assistant and later at Ecko, and one thing that I have to say about his art is that (unlike other big name artists) his work has never looked stale. There is always the same quality to his work, the man never lets up. He's always looking to improve his art and bring more to the table every time he's there, not the "same bag of tricks" used by other artists that have been in the biz as long or even less than he has. He's a great guy, talented artist (penciler, inker, and PAINTER both digital and traditional), and deserves a lot more of the spotlight : ) Truly one of the greats!

That was really interesting.

I never pay much attention to (or even notice) inkers, unless it's someone who's work I know (and like) as a penciler, and I can kinda see the similarities. So all these "what exactly do we do" conversations are very interesting to me.

Gotta respectfully disagree with Dan K., I don't think you only notice inkers when done badly. Bob McLeod was one of the four inkers who first made me notice inkers, along with Kyle Baker (did some great inking for Marvel in the 80s), Joe Sinnott and John Romita. Those four were the four inkers who would make me buy a comic based on their names alone.

Marvelous (no pun intended) interview, Drew.

Bob McLeod is not only one of my favorite inkers, but one of my favorite comics artists, period. He was the first artist from whom I ever personally commissioned a drawing -- a terrific Black Panther pinup that remains one of the highlights of my collection. A tremendous talent, and a gentleman also.

Great interview, Drew!
Love that Bob!
Nice to read an experienced pro quizzing an even MORE experienced pro.
Much to be learned here for comic artists and comic fans and even a silly comic writer.
Joe Sinnott next please?

A very interesting piece, thanks alot. I've always thought that inking and lettering were the least appreciated of the comic arts; you only really notice them when they are done badly.

Wonderful, WONDERful piece guys, take a bow. Bob McLeod is one of the greatest ever, whether inking, pencilling or both. One of my earliest favorites, and his work ages incredibly well.
