Hey, thanks for listing (pro)text here. I wanted to let you know that the presses will run the gamut from the for-profit press Wave Books which publishes about 20 titles a year to small hand-made journals like Filter to the little zines that Rachel makes at Eaten Alive. Many of the publishers who will be there produce perfect-bound journals and/or books but they are mostly funded as labors of love by the individual publishers. We do hope you’ll bring your students by! There will be performances throughout the day. This is a grass-roots event sponsored by Cranky as an attempt to get small presses noticed in an arena where we are not asked to shell out $75-$500 for a table. And it’s FREE! Thanks.

Nice to hear about the ZAPP. The only time I stopped into Hugo House was for a rock show and the ZAPP was closed for the evening. I’ve been meaning to swing by and donate my collection of zines that I built up over my years of working at the neighborhood Kinko’s.

My wife was especially impressed, Gabrielle; the stuff you read really resonated with things from her own life and past. And I could tell from the crowd reaction that Julie wasn’t alone in that, either.

Having you show up here made her day — well, both of ours, really. We really wanted you to KNOW how good we thought you were, and were bitterly disappointed we couldn’t find you during the swap-meet part of the afternoon to tell you so. Your work has an audience, don’t forget that. Keep it up.

And maybe we’ll see you at one or another of the small-press things here in town. Our focus is comics and cartooning but there’s a fair amount of overlap between that and the zine thing. Right now I’m trying to see if I can get some of my kids to (pro)text in a couple of weeks; quite a few of the girls are involved in something called Young Authors in addition to my class, so I know they’d be interested.

thanks so much for the nice comments, I’m the girl who read after David, my names Gabrielle Guarnero. You really hit the nail on the head with how nervous I was up there. Dead petrified. Its so good to know that people liked my work since that was my first time ever reading any of my stuff publicly.

I DID get a couple of nice e-mails. I sent a link to everyone who’d given us a business card or a zine with an e-mail contact, letting them know about the write-up, and I’ve since found out that the young lady that read after David is named Gabrielle.

I feel your pain, Greg. Here we are yammering on about standards of art, and you’re out there doing something about it, or at least letting us know about people who are doing something about it. Great column, as usual.
