Thunderbolts: I dunno.

I hadn't really read them much before. I think I bought the Avengers cross-over issues 7-8 years ago.

But I'm generally a fan of villain-centric books. I'll argue the merits of Super-Villain Team-Up for HOURS. And the single issue of "Sinestro: Boy Fiend" from Charlton rates as one of my fave comics ever.

Thunderbolts isn't as good as super-villain team-up. Needs more Henry Kissenger.

But it IS better than Villains United.

Then again, I really, really hated Villains United. Ach. Pooey. Having your newly established characters captured and not able to DO anything for, like, three issues makes for a crappy story, nomadahowya slice it.

And, y'know, I appreciate the satirical elements. And I did quite like Deodato on the Hulk, and he's doin' OK here.

But... still.. I dunno. Smells like another Warren Ellis book that ain't as good as Transmet, and I don't feel that's something I wanna support.

(Weirdly enough, I ended up buying Batman because of your comments, but I haven't read it yet.)

Joe, thanks for reviewing Ghost Rider: Trail of Tears. I had been wondering if it was worth reading, but I couldn't find a decent review of it anywhere. After your recommendation, I might pick it up, especially since Crain's art doesn't bother me nearly as much as it does you. I might also check out Barracuda while I'm at it.

Batman 663 - the comic book shop guy renamed it for me, which I thought was pretty awesome.

And accurate, as it turned out.

What a pile of suck.

I dunno, turning the Joker from the talkative nihilist spree killer he's been since the late 1980s into a mute nihilistic spree killer seems like the most reductive approach possible, really; far from the infinite and bizarre possibilities Morrison and Millar pulled off with the "blank slate" concept when the Joker turned up in Aztek.

At any rate, Joe is dead on with the Van Vleet art dying on the page -- the big splash reveal of the Joker looking like a mannequin should have worked a lot better, but everyone else looked like a mannequin already. But really, I said it below, and I'll say it again here -- Morrison stretched for a writing style here that would be for prose what exaggerated superhero art is to realistic representation, and demonstrated exactly why superhero art works despite itself while superheroic prose usually doesn't.

Tim, I see what you're saying, but metatextuality and reference doesn't make up for the abyssmal art. I applaud the idea, but the execution is severely flawed.

Joe, I tend to agree with your opinions, but I think you're way off base with Batman 663. Read my little essay at my blog: http://geniusboyfiremelon.blogspot.com to see a defense of the work.

Plot-wise, yeah, but meaning-wise? Wow, that would actually be neat.

Based off an interview with Axel Alonso where he stated that the miniseries is going to lead into events in issue #50 of Punisher MAX, I'm guessing that Barracuda will eventually end up developing into something more substantial than the first issue suggests.
