I enjoyed PWJ #4, but had somewhat of a change of heart last night. While furiously changing the channel from the Catwoman movie, I remembered how good the Brubaker Catwoman comics were. This really helped crystallize how I feel about character deaths: anyone can be the basis for a good story, even Stilt-Man. So I suppose that in reality, I do mourn for dead comic characters, or rather the loss of potential that goes with it.

On the other hand, however, this did provide for a good story (the first I’d ever read with Stilt-Man, in fact), and the sense of danger and uncertainty in comics can be well served by an occasional fatality.

On the third hand (damn X-gene!), dying and coming back, while often rightly vilified, sometimes works well. Astonishing X-Men was one of my first comics after a long absence, and I had no problem with Colossus–didn’t know he was dead, didn’t know why, got a little explanation of the Legacy virus and the other characters’ reactions–ok, got it, whatever, let’s get on with great stories. (My reaction seems mirrored by the characters in the comic, by the way.) Similarly, all the Elektra/Hand stuff from way back worked well.

All in all, chalk me up as deeply ambivalent. I’m willing to deal with this if it pays off more than the effort I have to put in to it.

Kirkman introduced a second Stilt-Man in Marvel Team-Up, but I don’t think he was ever used again. He was just some random guy who found the plans for the suit on the Internet.

Stilt Man came out of retirement because he heard that the government was offering work to supervillains so long as they registered. Wilbur saw this as an opportunity to finally do something productive with his life – Punisher saw one of those ducks from Duck Hunt.

Apparently there’s no room for “fun” characters in today’s Marvel U., much less “fun” villains. I think they prefer heroes fighting heroes.

At least that’s the vibe I got from the new issue of Punisher War Journal…

Okay.

Let’s forget about the 616 universe.
Let’s stick with the Ultimate universe, and the IKON titles.
Let’s forget all the continuity and the cross-overs and the tie-ins.

Then things might be better Marvel-wise.

Otherwise, pop a couple of tylenols (or aspirins) and try
to make sense of everything.

I miss Stilt Man. Whoever decided to do away with him has some pretty _big_ questions to answer. A lot of people made fun of ol’ Stilty, but I think he stood high above the rest.

Stilt-Man is easily in the top five Marvel baddies (MODOK, Batroc, Stilt-Man, Swarm, and ?) and maybe Top Five *any* baddies.

I mourn for him far more than I do for Cap, who will be back by the time his movie comes out at the latest.
