Not trying to be a brat but wondering when Magneto was Erik the Red? I remember Cyclops pretending to be Erik to join Magneto around X-Men 50 and that Sh’iar guy acting as Erik to restore Magneto to adulthood the first time he fought the new x-men. Has it been in the last 7 years or so, because I don’t own any X-men after 2001. If so, I would like to seek it out as I am a big fan of Magneto appearances.

Not bratty at all!

Magneto used the Erik the Red disguise in Uncanny X-Men #350 (late 1997).

I got to go against Batman at point guard. You want your PG to get people involved. When the hell has Batman ever been the type to do that? Honestly Batman might have the most upside of any player, but he'll kill your team.

Would it blow my indie-comics-writer cred to confess MY TERRIBLE LOVE FOR THE WRECKER?

I suspect it would. I DON'T CARE.

Great picks, Andrew!

Man, DC has so many, I bet we could try to come up with the ten best players, and try to make TWO teams - as evenly matched as possible.

DC Basketball team:
Steel/John Henry Irons- center. The man was once played onscreen by Shaq, so I think this is only natural!

Green Arrow/Ollie Queen- shooting guard, with Deadshot as an alternate. Neither one would miss a basket...EVER!

Booster Gold- forward. Has the build and the athleticism. Plus, if you ever need a few more seconds on the clock, he can put a call into Rip Hunter...

Batman- point guard. Mr. Terrific as an alternate. You want a field general who can strategize on the fly, who better then 2 of the DCU's "3 smartest men?"

Wildcat- power forward. He would rebound like crazy and his fists of fury would make him this team's Bill Laimbeer-like enforcer.

I wasn't making any attacks on Shooter, and I don't despise him; it just didn't seem like the type of character he would create.

I seriously disagree with your assertion that the Legion is more important than anything ever published by Marvel, since Marvel Comics more-or-less brought characterization and mood back into comics.

All the Legion has to offer are fruity flight rings and Matter-Eater Lad.

Though Matter-Eater Lad *is* seven shades of awesome. I'll give you that.

And I say that the Space Canine Patrol Agents had much better stories that the Legion. :- )

This one might be too different for you to deem it an homage, but the thematic connection combined with the visual similarity makes it a candidate, I think:

New Teen Titans #39:

I have to defend Shooter. He created a large number of characters who are arguably "as cool" as War Machine or Huntress- starting with Karate Kid & Ferro Lad, and moving through the whole Fatal Five.

The man may be despised in the current industry, but he achieved remarkable success in comics before graduating high school, and us Legion fans will forever be indebted to him.

It's not exactly a comic book cover, but Back Issue #20 has a cool Jerry Ordway homage of the Spider-man cover using Captain Marvel.

at one time or another Martian Manhunter, Projectra, and Magneto all held secondary superhero identies i think.

Correctamundo!

All three pretended to be other super-people for a time (Bloodwynd, Sensor Girl and Erik the Red, respectively...I'm only using Eric the Red in case people want to argue that, in current Marvel continuity, Magneto technically was never Xorn).

If the Constructicons taught us anything, it's that you don't mess with demolition based villians. Plus, what compells three convicts to listen to a guy who tells you, "Okay, here's the score. I've got an enchanted crowbar, and when we get out we're going to team up, get you guys some spadex, and tear some crap up. Who's with me?"
