"And also, if you could turn into Superman, why would you ever choose to turn into Steve Canyon?"

A Captain Action scholar might be able to confirm or deny this, but I always figured Ideal used Steve Canyon, Sgt. Fury and Buck Rodgers as their "military accessories" for the line. (Not a bad idea since the scale for Cap was a little larger than GI Joe. Joe uniforms would work, but the pantlegs would be a little high and Cap had bigger feet so HASBRO boots would be out if little Billy took his Captain Action to play Army on the playground with the other kids.)

My other theory was Ideal had the deal with Caniff dating back to the 50s Steve Canyon TV show and just took advantage of the relationship when they were putting the CA line together.

I've sent my pitch off as well; if it doesn't get accepted (which is, of course, likely in an "open submissions" environment), I'll be posting the pitch on my blog for the curious. But the quick and dirty version is, "It's 'The Unknown Soldier', but with super-heroes instead of World War II."

Wasn't the appeal of Captain Action not that he could turn into other heroes, but that he could turn into other heroes that you already knew? I can't imagine Moonstone being able to license Superman, Lone Ranger, Captain America, et al for this project! And also, if you could turn into Superman, why would you ever choose to turn into Steve Canyon?

It seems like they're accepting anything. Can't hurt to try!

Would Moonstone be likely to pick up a pitch from somebody without any writing experience?

I'm more interested in reading it than writing for it, but here's a free hint for all of you -- Captain Action, the original action figure, was all about turning into OTHER superheroes.

Now, we've already had Robby Reed and "Dial H for Hero," so I don't know that you'd use that SAME concept -- but some kind of compromise position between that idea and the Chistopher Chance Human Target master-of-disguise position ought to be in there.

And yeah, the original DC book was a heaping helping of awesome.

Hmmm.

I might do this.

The Gil Kane Captain Action in the seventies was coagulated comic brilliance.
