365 Reasons to Love Comics #82

Green Lantern Week: part five. Featuring the universe’s cutest Green Lantern, according to all the ladies. Rest assured, this here’s a ladies man.

82. Ch’p

(Click to make Ch’p’s actual size. Ha.)

Ch’p is pretty cool, because he’s basically Chip of the Rescue Rangers with a Green Lantern ring. And that is awesome. A Disney cartoon with a GL ring is a fun little concept, probably taken as far as it could go.

Ch’p was fighting against an invasion when he was gifted with a fallen Green Lantern’s ring by the Guardians. He defeated his archnemesis Dr. Ub’x (named after a Disney animator) and became an upstanding member of the Corps. Shame he never had a decent cover to himself. He was always in group shots, and the one cover dedicated to him didn’t even show his face!

(I think that’s him, anyway).

The little guy was heavily affected by Crisis on Infinite Earths. Time was rewritten so that he’d “died” in the past and everyone on his planet H’lven had moved on– his wife M’nn’e (Minnie Mouse?) remarried his best friend D’ll (or Dale, of the Rescue Rangers). Heartbroken, he hung out on Earth with the Earthbound GL Corps of the time.

Sadly, in an early issue of the John Stewart-centric Green Lantern: Mosaic (#2), Ch’p was killed in the most humiliating and stupid-kind-of-silly way ever: he was run over by a truck. A giant yellow truck. Le sigh. I know the scans used to be on the ‘net, but I can no longer find them.

(See? There he is!)

But I come to praise Ch’p, not to bury him! He was a great idea for a character. Maybe they took it as far as it could go, but I would’ve rather seen him fade into limbo than killed off ignobly.

As per usual with these GLs, here’s the detailed history and here’s the cool Wiki entry, which I think is actually in-depth, considering it’s Ch’p. I guess he has a bigger following than I thought. That’s good! He deserves it.

What’s your say on Ch’p, friends?

Awesome. I could definitely envision him in the new GLC.

I’m loving Green Lantern Week because all of these GLs are *exactly* what I love about comics – crazy, outrageous character ideas you don’t find in other media, and Ch’p is a perfect example of that – as you say, a typical cartoon character.

But instead of being in the Zoo Crew or something, he’s just another Green Lantern. It’s great. Great!

Here’s hoping we see Medphyl (speaking of Alan Moore using the GLC well . . .) before the week is up.

I knew it was going to be Ch’p before I clicked to open up the article.

Ah Ch’p. Cute little guy, did they really kill him off like that? Maybe next year you should do 365 Reasons to Hate Comics.

There should be a flashback story featuring Ch’p and coyote from the Coyote Gospel.

Awwwww…Chip *would* make a great GL. (The only thing wrong is the lack of a little Harrison Ford fedora. The overalls/bowtie combo is a bit too…Dale-ish.)

More seriously, Disney never complained about this? I’m impressed. Usually they’re a bit more paranoid about their copyrights than that…

OK, I’m not all that well-versed in Green Lantern lore and much of what you’ve been talking about this week has been Greek to me but Ch’p sounds outstanding! You’re almost making me wish I’d followed the last few decades worth of GL stories.

Argh! I loved Ch’p from the moment I saw him years ago. I can’t believe they killed him in such a horrible way. Was that another Dooley editorial mandate, like Hal goes wacko and kills everybody? Or was it something that the writer (Gerard Jones?) came up with?

i would’ve had to send a nasty e-mail if the great ch’p wasn’t included in my favorite reasons to love comics week. now i don’t have to boycott the internet and snap at strangers on the street. thank you.

i think i saw ch’p amoung other gls in a issue of the latest GLC series. not a speaking part just a part of a large multi-character drawing. i’m too lazy to dig it up and check what issue it was. perhaps i just willed it into my memory and it never happened. kinda like when winona laduke became president in 1996, nader died in a terrible pinto accident.

great post in a great idea for a series of posts!

“Ch’p was killed in the most humiliating and stupid-kind-of-silly way ever: he was run over by a truck. A giant yellow truck. Le sigh. ”

Are you kidding?

Ch’p was stupid.

He made the whole Green Lantern Corp seem like a stupid thing for stupid kids by having him in it.

It’s not the 50’s anymore – comics aren’t for kids, and shouldn’t be fun. They’re way too important for that.

(Maybe it’s a blessing the best GL since the planet died back then – imagine what they’d do to him now, under Dido)

So while I don’t know much about the Green Lanterns, I have to figure a series about G’nort, Kilowog and Ch’p cruising the galaxy and fighting space-crimes while trying to pick up hot alien chicks would be roughly 4,000 times more interesting than anything they can do with Hal Jordan.

Bry has just said the rightest thing about comics that I have read in years.

Ch’p getting killed was one of the reasons I quit buying comics.

They really should bring back Ch’p. Poor Salakk misses him.

Hey, at least Ch’p has a Heroclix figure:

(and Salaak, so far, doesn’t)

With all due respect, killing him with a yellow truck is pretty funny.

How much respect is due to a deceased fictional cartoon alien chipmunk?

How much respect is due a deceased fictional alien who wore his underpants on the outside?

If Ch’p is not on your Top 5 list of Green Lanterns than frankly you don’t have a soul and probably think highly of the ending to CIVIL WAR.

Hey, I was just re-reading my back issues of 52 (no snide comments, please, I enjoy it), and in week 24, in the big page 3 splash of the “new” Justice League, Ambush Bug is eating a bag of snack food labeled “Ch’ps” with a cartoony animal on the package.

Has the Bug made the 365 list yet?

They killed Ch’p with a yellow truck?

Crap, I have to find another humiliating way to kill Hal now.

Aww…thanks for all the wonderful sentiments, guys. Just so you know, thanks to the ol’ Superboy Prime time altering punch thingy (see Infinite Crisis) I am alive and well on MySpace! There’s an online petition to bring me back, too…and if anyone runs into Geoff Johns tell him to return my phone calls!

Greetings from Los angeles! I’m bored at work so I decided to check out your site on my iphone during lunch break. I love the info you present here and can’t wait to take a look when I get home. I’m amazed at how fast your blog loaded on my cell phone .. I’m not even using WIFI, just 3G .. Anyways, wonderful site!
