Detective is Batman Adventures repackaged with a bit more murder and 'adult' artwork.
I wish they didn't cancel Batman Adventures.

It's not that it bored me, Grant, because I haven't read Madman before, and I appreciated it. I'm going to keep buying it, because I like Allred, but I'm just wondering if such a heavy recap is really the way to go for a first issue.

BTW Madman is usually a great book. If the recap issue bored you try sticking with it for another issue.

Though I really want to read that recap issue. Hopefully this Wednesday.

I'll be picking up both 'Iron Fist' and 'Welcome to Tranquility' in trades (which is something none of those sales numbers take into account--I'd dearly love to sneak a peek at DC's ledgers sometime, and find out just how many titles are being published monthly purely as a loss leader for the trade paperbacks...)

<blockquote>Somebody took umbrage with the fact that I didn’t mention Googe’s art last issue. </blockquote>
That'd be me. I'm always disappointed when reviewers neglect to mention artists, regardless of the quality of the pencils/inks/colors. Comics are the marriage of words and pictures. By only focusing on the writing, half of the work is overlooked; by extension, half of the medium itself gets overlooked. I'm not saying each review should have an in-depth analysis of the art (because that could prove ludicrously time consuming), but some mention of the visual aspect of each issue is definitely a plus, especially for any prospective readers who're trying to decide whether or not to buy a series based on reviews (which might even happen!).

You're far, far better at acknowledging artists than a lot of critics, Greg, which is probably why I took umbrage with Googe's omission last time. A quick comment, like "Googe provides typically solid work, albeit replete with esoteric oval-noses," would've probably sufficed; it would've been preferable to nothing at all, anyway. This week's review, with its look at the areas of the art that work and those that don't, is great, by the way, and that panel's inclusion certainly helps to illustrate (hey, pun) your point.

As for those nose ovals, I'm pretty sure they're simplified representations of the cartilaginous ridge that runs from the root of the nose (where it meets the skull or at least the nasal bone) to the apex (where it meets the base/nostrils), but mostly they're a stylistic tick, which I rather dig, as they make his work instantly identifiable and unique. But, I guess I'm in the minority there.

I thought maybe I was the only one who noticed those little ovals on Googe's noses. I like his art on the book quite a bit, but the little ovals are distracting. I began looking for them in other books to see if other artists did the same, but no, not really.

Another New Yorker Without Madman.

I don't know what an anchor tag is, that's why! I'm lucky I know how to post images, that's how computer-illiterate I am.

And footnotes are fun.

OT but what's up with the superscript "1" for the footnote? A poster on the Comics Journal message board does a similar thing with multiple asterisks (!) that makes his writing beyond unreadable.

This is the Internet, so why not use an anchor tag?

The Legion is really heating up as Waid and Kitson end their run. All signs point to all the teenagers vs. adult stuff that so many people complained about will largely be a thing of the past once this storyline is over.
Great stuff.

My shop apparently didn't count on there being a demand for Madman, and only ordered a scant few copies which were gone by the time I got there. Doesn't sound like I missed much. Having never read the book before, the ten-page CBR preview, which was all recap, felt kinda off-putting instead of catch-up-y. I would rather it just leap into the story. Same with that cheapo Godland issue that didn't entice me at all. Hmm.

Whedon's issue of Runaways was good, I think, so you may find enjoyment in it. I dunno how different it is from Vaughan's stuff. I am a newb.

'Tec was okay. The best bit was the flashback at the end. I know Dini can write a good story-- his first issue was fantastic-- but quite a few of these Detectives have been more mediocre than I'd like, and the art is starting to bore me. I'm thinking about dropping it, but I keep coming back. I'm probably a bad comics reader.

In fact, I must be, as I don't find the Iron Fist title to be fun. I love the art, I like Matt Fraction's other stuff-- what's wrong with me?

That's bullshit. We live in NYC. We should get everything first.

It's the fly over states that should get fucked over by Diamond.

David's gone out and said that this is pretty much Linda.

The feel I got for Harley not being able to spell is that the jokey voices in her head (which were just a cute page 1 gag anyway) were dredging up a spelling be moment from when she was a kid.

Really glad you liked Iron Fist, and even gladder that you'll be picking it up. It's a great book that deserves to live.

Marvel isn't as gloom and doom as it was a few months ago(surprisingly enough), but it's still just so incredibly fun and made with a lot of love. And that makes it stand out, even amongst two or three other Bru books.

I forgot to mention that this will bring all the rumors back, Linkara, about Supergirl. I doubt if David will let it go too far, because he's not writing for DC anymore, but I'm sure that's what he had in mind. It doesn't really interfere with the story, although I'm sure Peter David haters will get all snippy about his jokes.

You're welcome, Adam, even though I'm not sure how much it will help.

Michael - that's good to know. I wondered what the deal was!

What's Lin's backstory? Oh, I don't know. Probably something weird like being an earthborn angel or flying around in a white tub-top with a big shiny 'S' on it or sending a poor girl to her doom because some cosmic spirit of vengeance wouldn't let her bend the rules or something. ^_~

Very peeved.

Can't wait for Gargantua. They should do a second printing of the big Atomics book that came out a few years back.

Very peeved.

Can't wait for Gargantua. They should do a second printing of the big Atomics book that came out a few years back.

Glad you like IRON FIST. I've been reading this title since the first issue because I'm a fan of Brubaker and I knew Fraction's penchant for quirky-yet-cool pop culture oddities would make him a perfect fit for this title. (On his message board, he refers to it as "kung-fu billionaire"). The art, which is outstanding, is icing on the cake.

Your other choices were pretty solid as well. Good week.

The thing about Harley, though, was that she was a *bad* psychiatrist. In fact, I recall Mad Love intimating that she slept her way to her degree.
