. . . and they have “leached [sic] respect away from strong leadership, championing chaotic individualism.”

No [sic] is needed here; this is a correct use of the verb "to leach". Look it up.

But alas! his telechron only functions in one direction, so he’s trapped in the awful future. Didn’t he read Welles’ The Time Machine?

First, The Time Machine was written by Wells, not Welles. Second, reading it would not have helped Quayle on this point, because Wells's time machine could travel both forward and backward in time.

He actually says “Jumping Jehoshaphat!” He’s from the 1930s, remember, and that’s what they said back in the Depression - incorrect spelling and all!

"Jehoshaphat" is the correct spelling. Look it up (2 Chronicles and 1 Kings in the Old Testament).

I guess I'm an anomaly *koff* because I've always loved Sekowsky's work. Does this mean I'll hate it someday? I'm so confused...

The JLA put their headquarters in Rhode Island so that nobody would have to give Snapper Carr, who lived there, a lift to their meetings. Nobody wanted to put up with that goddamn interminable snapping for a moment longer than they absolutely had to. I'm sure Gardner Fox could have turned out a "Secret Origin of the JLA Headquarters" story in five minutes if only Julius Schwartz had ever thought to ask him for one.

When Kurt sold this story, he was incredibly pleased at having slipped in the Scooby Doo reference. In fact, he was so enthused about it that when the issue finally came out, I thought I must be missing something. I don't know if his script originally called for the characters to be drawn as that Fred and Daphne but Sekowsky chose to ignore it, or if some gag that would have justified those character names -- for instance, Dr. Anomaly complaining to the pair "I would have gotten away with it too, if it hadn't been for you meddling temporal researchers!" -- got edited out along the way. As it stands, I was never sure what the point of that was.

Sekowsky is always belated in becoming a favorite of people. For whatever reason, it takes a while to figure out just how good he was at what he was doing.

Mark Evanier told a story about working with Sekowsky somewhere, probably H-B. Sekowsky eventually got one of those "take a number" things and put it outside his office. The sign said "Take a number to tell me how you used to hate my art, but love it now."

I remember this issue, but I thought it paled to Busiek's "Coming of Paragon" story in an early JLoA issue. Now THAT had some action!

I've noticed that Sekowsky's faces have quite a bit of variation depending on his inker (the panel here doesn't look a lot like other Wonder Woman art I've seen from him), but he's belatedly become one of my favorite artists. I especially like the way he draws "incidental" characters and villains - with a lot of cartoony distinctiveness that (reasonably enough) the more iconic hero faces don't have.

I suppose the one difference between this and the Gardner Fox JLofA stories it's modeled on is that Dr. Anomaly has a broadly sympathetic motivation; he's not one of Fox's purely malign scientists or aliens, but rather a badly misguided and anachronistic sort who thinks that he's the superhero in his story.

Come to think of it, the "varsity"-style superhero teams really don't tend to get even vaguely sympathetic villains, do they? Maybe because of the expectation of scale, all their recurring foes turn out to be megalomaniacs with genocidal or totalitarian ambitions.

I actually have this issue. Actually, I have all four of Busiek's JLofA issues, including the coming of Paragon and the "Family Crisis" story. And Tom Peyer used the "future is horrible" aspect in DC 2000, only instead of a well-meaning guys from the 1930s, it's the friggin' Spectre.

Wow...science AND technology? Give those people a research grant, stat!

I like Sekowsky's Wonder Woman, too. Besides the logical ethnicity, she looks like an actually powerful, capable woman...as opposed to the usual male comic artist's solution to the same idea. Which is, of course, "Of course she's powerful! Look how she carries around those really big boobs!"

Busiek's clearly channeling Gardner Fox here; with the exception of the framing device, the structure, plot, and villain are completely in line with what you can find in the Showcase JLA volumes. Heck, it even has Mike Sekowsky on art!

Oh, and according to Wikipedia, it's "Science and Technology Advanced Research Laboratories."

So, the best way to take out Batman really is to drop some rocks on him? I think Bruce Timm owes Killer Croc an apology.
