I'm a bit late commenting on this, but I think the photos in Alice in Sunderland are actually reproduced with some sort of Photoshop filter. I could be wrong, but they just don't seem to be painted with a brush. Great review though, and I loved the book.

I'm not quite finished Sunderland yet, but I'm really enjoying it. It may sound dry, but it's surprisingly addictive; once you start reading, it's quite fascinating. And of course, it look amazing. On top of that, the value is incredible - 320-page full-colour OGN for $30? Seriously, where else can you get that much comics for your cash? And I get to see Talbot tonight! (Info here for anyone in the Toronto area who hasn't heard about it yet)

Sunderland is where I was born and raised. This made AiS pretty much a compulsory purchase (together with the fact it is by Bryan Talbot of course). Itâ€™s a fantastic book but I know what Tom Russell is getting at. I read more â€œregularâ€ comics the same weekend as AiS such as â€œIron Fistâ€ and â€œthe Killerâ€ and probably enjoyed them more, although I appreciated the level of craft in AiS and got something completely different out of it compared to other more whimsical titles. Definitely worth getting but not for everyone.

I'm (hopefully, if I can find a copy) going to buy AIS this afternoon. I just got The Tale Of One Bad Rat out of the library (again) and remembered all over again why Talbot is my favourite cartoonist that my favourite cartoonists like... I don't know whether it's good or bad that he never did a run Befuddling X-Teens or whatever to make the american market aware of his work.

Elk's Run is going to have to wait a little bit. Maybe my library will get it!

I'm about due to buy a comic book book (as opposed to the standard-size pamphlet) in the next few months, and Alice in Sunderland looks to be seven shades of awesome. But so does the transformations of Jimmy Olsen trade. That trade is (1) cheaper than Alice in Sunderland and (2) I know I'll love it, while AiS could, concievably, disappoint. Not saying it will, but it's a blind buy, even with the strong recommendations here and elsewhere, and if I don't like it, then I'll be out $30 with nothing to show for it. Damn me and my addiction to Superman's Pal! But should I win the lottery or get a pay raise or something, AiS will be near the tippy-top of my list.

Alice in Sunderland looks really unappealing, and I've been in university for the past several years. Studying English.

Elk's Run is a bit more interesting, but I don't really dig the art examples that you provided, the style seems a bit... scratchy for my tastes.
