Snark Free Corner for 4/23

Welcome to the latest installment of your breath of snark free air!

Enjoy!

COOL COMIC THINGS

This weekend, I attended the Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo in Columbus, Ohio.

user_icon.gif

It was most certainly a cool comic thing.

The most amusing aspect to me was how there was a doll convention at the same convention center, and it was MUCH more crowded than SPACE – but that’s most likely because of all the OPTIONS that fans have nowadays for comic book conventions.

SPACE isn’t even the only comic book convention this past weekend that was designed specifically for small press comics! The Alternative Press Expo was ALSO this past weekend, only on the Left Coast!

It is a good time for comic fans – especially fans of mini-comics.

I got a whole pile of mini-comics – so expect some new reviews this week!

COVER THEME GAME

As always, here is the game. I show three covers. They all have something in common, whether it be a character, a trait all three characters share, locale, creator, SOMEthing. And it isn’t something obvious like “They all have prices!” “They all have logos!” “They all feature a man!” etc.

In addition, please note that you must have some familiarity with comic book history to correctly guess these comics. You cannot guess the connective theme just by looking at the covers solely, you must have some knowledge beyond just the covers.

Good luck! This one is pretty tough, but I thought last week’s was tough, and it was solved quickly, so only ONE cool point this week!

SNARK FREE CHALLENGE

Who has a cooler costume – The Flash or Wonder Woman?

COVER HOMAGE

Here’s how this one works.

I give you a cover, and you have to tell me a comic cover that homages this cover.

You get a cool point for each cover (one cool point per commenter, so one single commenter can’t just blow it all in one fell swoop), with double the cool points for any cover homage from three on (as I can only think of two homages myself, offhand)…

3364_4_01.jpg

Here’s the twist, though – you cannot use a cover drawn by Kevin Maguire himself.

Oooooh…trickier, eh?

WHO IS IT?

Remember, tell me who it is and what number clue gave it away!

The character was Javelin. I suspected on clue 2 and got it on clue 4.

I think the Illuminatti: Issue 1 was an homage to that JL over.

Homage: Justice League Europe #1, Justice League Annual #4, Justice League International #24, Justice League Europe Annual #2

Shit…I didn’t see the twist. You have to understand…usually, I don’t see this column until Tuesday, and everybody answers the stuff by then. I’m very sorry.

As for the cooler costume: I like the Flash. It’s basic red, and there’s been very little alteration over the years.

I like The Flash’s costume better.

Homage?

Ack, HTML doesn’t work.

It’s supposed to be the cover to The Pulse #11 with everyone crowded around Jessica with her new baby.

The Flash absolutely has the cooler costume. Wonder Woman’s is just an odd America pastiche. But the Flash has one of the greatest, most iconic costumes in comics. It’s so simple, and yet everything you need to know about the character is there. Lightning=fast and earwing/ornament-thing=running. I love the Flash’s costume and I’ve never even touched a single Flash comic.

Actually, someone gave me the “Stan Lee Imagines The Flash” comic, but I don’t think that counts.

Another homage cover: Formerly Known as the Justice League #1

Justice League Europe #26 is an homage to JL #1.

http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=49567&zoom=4

Since Jason took most of the cover homages, I’m going to go with Justice League Quarterly #3, with a shrunken League featuring a tiny Guy saying “Wanna Make Something of It?”

Also, the Flash’s costume is cooler by far. Because the Flashes are the coolest evah.

Flash’s costume by far. Nothing says cool like a pair of jeans, a red sweatshirt, and a metal hat with little wings on it.

Cover Homage: Gen13/Fantastic Four. Drawn by Maguire himself!

Yeah, I gotta go with absolutely any Flash costume over any Wonder Woman costume. M Bloom throws some snark at Jay Garrick’s costume, but it’s a classic that nobody’s ever dreamed about changing. Can’t say that for too many superheroes.

Throw in Wally’s Kid Flash costume, Barry and Wally’s red Flash uniforms, and Alex Ross’s KINGDOM COME design – when it comes to costumes, The Flash may be the king of the DC legacy heroes…

The JL cover thread is no good without pictures! But the JLAntarctica, where they were facing the wrong way; or the recruitment drive cover where it was REALLY crowded… They really milked that pose for every joke they could get, didn’t they?

Cover theme: I got nothin’. I’m worse at those than I am at Magic Eye pictures.

The Flash’s costume is a better overall design, but Wonder Woman’s contains cleavage. And I never underestimate the power of cleavage.

And I guessed Javelin on clue #4, was positive on clue #5.

Now, here’s a corollary to the Flash question:

Which Flash costume is cooler; the one that Barry invented that fits in a ring and expands when exposed to nitrogen, or Wally’s costume that is made entirely of the Speed Force?

That’s not snark, Kenn MFP. I really do think Jay’s costume is awesome.

Primal Force #8′s cover was yet another homage to the infamous Kevin Maguire “hey look we’re standing here from below” shot.

Wow, that is seriously the first time in literally years I have thought about Primal Force.

The JLA animated pic doesn’t work. Here’s a better one:

cover homage:

X-Factore # 146:

http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=84764&zoom=4

(by the way, since I came across this cover, I’ve been hoping that Justice League #1 comes up in this game so I could use it.

that should be Factor without that imaginary E I added to the end.

It’s the old tyme mutant group!

Cover homage, Planetary Brigade #1 (Matt Haley art):
http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=289488&zoom=4

Hunter (Pedro Bouça)

Sorry, M Bloom, my snark detector gave off a false positive!

I gotta go with Barry’s Magic Shrinking Clothes over Wally’s clothes made out of magic wishing. Clothes made out of energy just make me nervous and worried that Wally’s gonna lose his concentration…

Cover homage: Here’s another animation-style one: Adventures in the DC Universe #1 by John Delaney http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=60134&zoom=4

I think the cover challenge is something like that the covers are all flashbacks within the story.

- Uncanny X-Men: The cover depicts Forge’s life in the Vietnam War, but the issue is a Morlock issue; that Forge stuff is just a flashback.

- Legends of the DK: The story takes place early in Batman’s career, and is something he’s telling a psychiatrist.

- JLSF: I think Martian Manhunter and Gammeron have met before (“Reunion”), even though that’s one of his first appearances, so I’m thinking it might also be a flashback-cover

I don’t know, though, this is a hard one.

Justice League Quarterly #1 is another homage, mixing the JLA with the Conglomerate.

I doubt the cover challenge is that all our heroes are splayed so wide we can see their Commander Steel-esque packages, but that’s my guess and I’m stickin’ with it.

Cover homage: How about the cover to the second Invincible trade (8 is Enough):

As for WW v. Flash, I have to go with Flash. Close though, as Wonder Woman is so iconic. Yet the Flash’s is far more “practical” and sleek.

I’ll take a stab at the cover game, even though I only have access to the X-Men and JLTF issues. Is it rehabilitated villains almost returning to form?

JLTF has L-Ron in Despero’s body nearly destroying an off-shore mining rig and nearly killing the inhabitants before deciding not to.

Uncanny has Callisto being turned from glamorous model back to her Morlock self, only to revert again at the end.

Like I said, I don’t have the Batman issue to gauge by, but this is as good of a guess as I can make from the two issues I do have.

I don’t any of those covers are homages, besides Justice League Europe #26

^I don’t think

WW wins because no matter how much damage diana has, the costume still covers everything. And it comes with cool accesories.
THe flash costume has what – a secret compartment ring, BAH!

StormWatch #37 (Warren Ellis’ first issue) is a Justice League homage.

Belated cover homage (can you tell I’m organizing all my old comics?). And unlike many people, I actually read the sentence about it NOT being drawn by Maguire:

Which comics had the Justice League Antarctica on facing the wrong way?

Mark_Lucas (not THE Mark Lucas, are you?) JLA Annual #4, as seen here:
