Not such a strong month.

Honourable mentions:
Amazing Spiderman 543 - like the use of the red behind the black and the off centre framing
Daredevil 99 - both Matt and Milla are well drawn
Treasure Island 2 - I don't think it's too bright, I think it's a beautifully detailed piece of work.

Top Five

5 Spider Man Fairy Tales 3 - because it looks quite unusual and moody, not very Peter Parker

4 Iron Man 20 - that Gerald Parel knows a thing or two about making a damn fine cover - making Tony Stark somehow weak and vulnerable, very fine.

3 Cable & Deadpool 43 - more brilliance from Skottie Young - particularly his crazy haired Wolverine

2 New Avengers: Illuminati 4 - very fine group shot - hope you don't miss the (ahem) point(s).

1 She Hulk 21 - because Horny ain't all about the T&A, he can create great expressive characters and situations and don't both Jen and Shulkie come across so well, here?

i know that its appearance on the videogame cover was pointed out, but really- that carnage was one of the most overused things i remember from the 90s. it started with maximum carnage and i wound up seeing it on lots of promos, ads, tie-is and merch for years afterwards. and THAT one looks almost exactly like a trace.

And here's a few more to choose from. You can really see how he's moved on from his painted beginnings to embrace the PC:

When you see that cover in the flesh, I'd be very surprised if the character's face is much different from this lad here: http://www.2000adonline.com/functions/cover.php?choice=1442&Comic=2000ad

Is that the first work Clint Langley’s done for the Yankee Dollar? If so, get ready for a whole new level of photo-reference.
You mean someone out there actually has a weapon like that cover (Cay referred to it as the "tongue gun")?!?!

D'oh! J beat me to it.

But yeah, I think Ferry deserves SOME demerits for that stuff, which is why it isn't ranked HIGHER, but the main power of the cover comes from

A. Ferry's layout of the cover

and

B. The main figure, which Ferry drew himself.

Why on earth does that Ultimate FF cover get an honorable mention? It’s so blatantly obvious he doesn’t even bother to draw backgrounds, those airplanes are swiped stock photos which he tried to cover up with Photoshop filters.
So? If that's true, what does it matter? It's still a good composition.

Alex Maleev too. Video game screenshot + filter = hard work!

Great caption on the Amazing Spidey, there. How else can one deflate all that pathos? Love the Skottie Young cover for Deadpool. Glad to see Art Adams is still working, I just wish I could find more of his stuff. Terrible costume for Thor... sucks all the energy right out of the character. And that Michael Turner cover reaches new levels of suck, but I've gotta hand it to him - I didn't even notice the women. Between Mr. Fantastic looking horrible and Black Panther pulling the Dr.Strange/Cloak pose, Storm seems almost demure by comparison. Give him credit, though, he's evolving his style where the women don't look so ridiculous anymore...

Oh, and the Hildebrandt cover? Awesome. He picked his colours just right for that part of the story.

I think that Young's CABLE/DEADPOOL cover looks more like Sam Kieth than Sienkiewicz, with the elongated arms and Wolverine's hair tufts.

What’s the deal? Is the C, like, removable when she’s in different moods? Pretty creepy.

You know, if you were a woman and you said that, you'd be a homophobe.

I usually can't stand him, but Greg Horn's really been on a roll of late. The last several She-Hulk covers have all been pretty good, major improvements on the first year of the new volume. The Awesome Andy cover (#14) in particular was great. Ms. Marvel covers haven't held up as well, but he's at least getting creative with the last few.

Carnage in that Spider-Girl cover looks an awful lot like he came from the old Maximum Carnage videogame:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:MaximumcarnageSNES_boxart.jpg

Not an exact trace (the hands are in a slightly different position), but it's the first thing I thought of.

Spider-man Reign wasn't all that good.

At least the first issue.

But Kaare Andrews is damnnear my favorite cover artist ever. That's now officially my favorite cover ever to have Wolverine on it.

And I dropped all the Marvel stuff a month-or-so back (temporarily, 'cause of no money) but I think I have to get that Treasure Island Adaptation.

Damn my obsessive compulsive love of pirates.

I'm curious how New Avengers/Transformers will turn out. Who's drawing it? C'mon Cap and Optimus Prime that's pretty cool.

I'm pretty excited about the Bendis/Maleev Halo book. That cover has sort of Moebius feel to it.
