I started becoming interested in comics again when I was about forty. But I can still remember those brilliant checkerboard DC covers from when I was 6 or 7 - and the equally brilliant Batman series on TV (preferable to those gloomy pretentious 'Frank Miller' films with the likes of Michael Keaton and Heath Ledger).

Annoying, annoying go-go checks.
Always hated them. Used to try to haggle with comic store clerks, that this one should cost less because it's got those stupid annoying go-go checks across the top.
And it never worked.
Hate the go-go checks, stupid idea. messing up some perfectly fine Legion covers.
Annoying, annoying go-go checks.
Always hated them.

Could you do more features about the go-go checks?

The recent Action Comics annual featured checks on the cover, I don't know of anything since then.

The little black-and-white Spidey and Captain America pictures Marvel used instead of barcodes were also pretty funky.

So it was that short a period- huh. I've seen those so often I thought they went for about half the decade.

"but now I can see why Marvel had the horizontal bar at the top of all their 70s comics."

Yeah, now that you mention it, it seems pretty logical from that point of view.

I remember when Marvel went from the corner box to that horizontal bar back in 1971. I always hated it, though, of course, practically every comic book I was buying those days was off of a spinner rack.

You know, that brand recognition factor (especially given the vertical racks) is something I hadn't heard before, but now I can see why Marvel had the horizontal bar at the top of all their 70s comics.

I think "go-go checks" is a fine addition to these 365 reasons to love comics, and I guess "Marvel Value Stamps" are on their way. But I hope we won't see "ads for Palisades Park!" No, I'm kidding. I'd be fine with that.

Very nice observation. And don't forget about The Silver Age books from a few years back with the retro covers and checks.
