Help me buy my comics this week!
- by Greg Burgas

It's Tuesday, and that means ... audience participation!
Here is the list of comics that are coming out. My shopping list is below:
Samurai: Heaven and Earth volume 2 #4
JLA Classified #38
Mystery in Space #8
Outsiders #47 (Yes, I'm giving it a look because of the Checkmate crossover.)
Y The Last Man volume 9 TPB
Noble Causes #29
Phonogram #6 (Yay!)
Iron Fist #5 (See? Now I'm hooked.)
Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four #2 (Possibly. I may just wait for the trade, even though I bought issue #1.)
Cover Girl #1 (Even though Kevin picked on me and the entire blog in his comments section. The nerve of him! I may cry.)
The Gamekeeper #2
Chronicles of Wormwood #3
The Killer #4
Rex Libris #8
The Secret History #2
Two Guns #2
You know, when I have a small week like last week, I always think "Maybe I'm beginning to cut back on my purchases." Yeah, right. Then a week like this comes along. For the non-Big Two stuff, I'll believe that it's out when it's in my hands, but even so, this is a big week. But there's still some other stuff out there. So let me hear it, people! What else, besides all this stuff, should I buy?

Ugh. I guess it's either DMZ (which I remember you didn't care much) or giving Countdown a shot.

Yeah, I'd probably go with Countdown too. The only other new series starting this week I'm interested in is the Hack/Slash series. The artwork looks amazing and Tim Seeley has done a great job of making me care about a series about slasher flicks, a genre I don't normally care much for.
And hey, Greg, don't feel bad about buying Outsiders just because of the Checkmate crossover. There are plenty of us in the same boat my friend...

I'm going to go with Thunderbolts, just because the concept is still relatively accesable to someone who has not been following it. As long as you know who Norman Osborn is you should sort of be able to follow it. Combine that with the awesome creative team and it's a solid book.
I'm not going to recommend Countdown yet, although I think it'll be better than 52, which I admitedly liked overall.

You should check out Invincible 41, if only because of the bitchin' cover. http://www.silverbulletcomics.com/shop/product.php?a=96874
I don't understand why everybody likes Phonogram so much. I buy it, but only cos I'm from Bristol and I like seeing the places where I hang out in a comic book. Doesn't anyone else find it a bit boring?

I have to go with Green Lantern Corps #12.
The best Green Lantern of them all, Guy Gardner, is charged with murder. Some strange shit is going down on Mogo, and something yellow has seemed to infected Kilowog.
This is easily one of the best books DC is publishing and needs more eyes to view its amazing to the uber degree.

Looks I'm just getting New Avengers and Invincible this week.
Of the two I say get new Avengers because it's taken a major upswing in quality and suprisingly accesiable and entertaining despite the fact it's came from the events in Civil War.

this week I'm getting:
Countdown, Jack of Fables, Tales of the unexpected, Y the last man, Nobel causes, and Iron Fist.
I vote for Countdown.

I'm going to recommend Batman Strikes. Batboy and Robin looks like it's going to be lots of fun. And last month's issue was pretty good too.
I don't know about Countdown, yet.
I just read the 10 page preview and it left me kind of... eh?!?
For starters, Darkseid wears a Pink Tutu and plays Heroclix (okay... maybe one of those things isn't true). Anyways, what shocked me was that the Multiverse isn't a week old, and all of a sudden, characters already know about it and one D-lister is even looking for a way home, and whatever. I just don't know, maybe there's an explanation. I mean, maybe Booster reverted back to his Bwah-ha-ha personality and decided to e-mail this little secret to everybody in DC Universe and let them know how he single-handedly saved 52 Earths from Mister Mind.
Hell, I can see it know:
Rip Hunter: "Hey Booster, I thought I told you to keep your trap shut about the 52 Earths!"
Booster: "I did! Never told a soul!"
Rip Hunter: "Oh, really? Then why did I just get an e-mail from you? Hell, you even CC:ed the Pink Flamingo!!! He lives on another Universe!!!"
Booster: "My bad. I guess I must have gotten my mailing lists all mixed up. Say, you wouldn't be interested in purchasing some online Viagra?
(...it's without a prescription!)"

I got nothin' this week. I'd say that you could give Countdown a shot, but it's gonna be (legitimately) available for free online, so you can give it a shot without actually buying it.

I'd get Spidey/FF in singles. It's only four issues, and the trade will probably be a digest, so you should probably just pick up the next three.
You're already buying a great spread, though, so I don't think I have anything to suggest. 2000AD, maybe? Just for something random.

While everyone seems to be leaning towards Countdown, unless you are knee deep into things like 52 and the greater DCU, its probabyl going to disappoint.
If you can find it, I'd recommend Josh Howard's Lost Books of Eve #2. It is easily the best art that Josh has put out and the entire story is pretty compelling, despite its simplicity. Its more adventurous than his previous work. I really liked the last issue, so I'd recommend this one.
If you can't find that, I recommend Nova #2. The last issue was an incredibly strong debut, with some nice new twists on the character and his situation. This one is going to tie to the post-Civil War Marvel Universe, which might turn you off a bit, but I think that DnA will make it interesting despite that.

Hulk and Power Pack. Charming, straightfoward all-ages superheroics, with no political allegories or convoluted corporate crossovers to spoil the fun. Plus a MiniMarvels backup, which is always hard to resist: last issue had Devil Dinosaur failing to change a baby's diaper because he has no opposable thumbs.
Madame Mirage First Look. Despite a dreadful cheesecake cover, Paul Dini's other new series this week might be worth trying out for his writing. And its cheap, too - only 70p in the UK.

Nova #2, because Nova #1 was so good! Seriously, issue #1 was awesome, and even though I read Annihilation, it seemed like it'd be extremely accessible to people who didn't.
I don't know about recommending you start Invincible now, since it sort of seems to be an epilogue to the most recent arc.
DMZ is supposed to be kicking off a new arc, but way back when I first tried picking the book up, I wasn't too hot on it until I got all the back issues. That said, #18 was a good start to an arc that seems accessible to new readers, so if you can find that, maybe try to get it and #19. This one site I go to gave it a bit of press recently too:

You forgot OKKO: The Cylcle of Water # 3, if you're picking up The Killer and The Secret History, then you've got to get OKKO.

Based on reading the first trade yesterday, I'm going to suggest Star Wars Legacy #11 or just pick up the first trade that came out last week. It's got great action, some spectacular art, and is everything I was looking for in a Star Wars book. If you're any kind of fan of the movies, give it a shot.
DMZ is always worth a shot too, although this is part 2 of the new arc. I'm undecided on Countdown, but you might check it out to see if it's any different than 52.

Punisher War Journal #7. Matt Fraction is good. Even if the Olivetti art is terrible.

A couple of trades I would recommend would be Criminal vol.1 (but I think you got the single issues) and Eternals for some John Romita Jr goodness.
Maybe the Marvel Zombies Dead Days one-shot if you are interested in that stuff. Most of my books are mid-story arc so there is no point telling you to give them a look.

"Punisher War Journal #7. Matt Fraction is good. Even if the Olivetti art is terrible."--Tim C.
Ok, good, I thought I was the only one that thought this.
Look how many comics on your list cost more than $3:
Mystery in Space, Noble Causes, Phonogram, Cover Girl, Chronicles of Wormwood, The Killer, The Secret History, Two Guns--Yipes!!
I'll be getting Spider-Girl, because it's fun. Plus, subplots!
Loveless vol. 5 is on that list, but that doesn't make sense; only two TPB's have come out so far. If your comic shop orders from the future, you should get that one.

DMZ is the only book I am comfortable reocmmending this week that you are not already buying. DMZ has been consistently interesting and the art is well done too.
Otherwise, I have enjoyed Jack of Fables which seems to have become another fun book.

I read the Nova #2 copy our shop got as a preview, and I enjoyed it.
But, yeah... go for Countdown. I am already anticipating liking it, and yeah... I am anticipating you not liking it. But I can read what you write and see why I disagree.

Is that true? I don't see it listed.

Of the comics not on your list, there are only 2 I can honestly recommend.
The first is Stormwatch: PHD #7. It is part 2 of a story, so you'll better off picking up any back issue but #5, but this is a very enjoyable comic. Seeing human agencies coping with a superhero world is a fun concept, and so far it's mostly consisted of solid done-in-ones, heavy on the F%^# Yeah moments. If you're looking for another Gotham Central or Checkmate, try this.
The other is Madame Mirage First Look. Yes, the cover looks ridiculous -- but surely Paul Dini deserves the benefit of the doubt.

I'd recommend Okko, but coming in on the 3rd issue of a 4-issue mini is a tough call. Instead, I'll repeat my standing recommendation of Star Wars: Legacy. Just do it already!

Countdown - maybe...they don't have the same level of talent writing it as they did 52, but if they learn from the mistakes of 52 and don't repeat them, it could turn out to be a good series. I'd wait though, before recommending it.
Thunderbolts - An odd title. I'll read it, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it...especially to someone who hasn't been reading it.
Invincible - Absolutely! Highly recommended.
Green Lantern Corps - One of the worst titles being produced by DC right now. A title with zero sense of direction, no feeling for the characters, and ludicrous plots. I really don't like this book.
Jack of Fables - This current arc is seriously EH. Overall, a good title, but if you haven't been reading it, I can't say as I'd recommend starting with this issue.
Y The Last Man - this title is in the homestretch. If you've enjoyed it thus far, I'd say definitely pick it up. Otherwise, wait for the trade.
Nova - I wasn't sure how to feel about last issue. And in this issue, Marvel editorial imposes Iron Man upon Nova in order to tie in the events of Civil War. I think it's a mistake to do something like that in such an early issue of a new title.
Punisher War Journal - If every issue of this title were as good as last week's Spidey annual, I'd say no question. As it is, last issue was pretty EH, and the title has really been hit or miss for me as a whole. It's not that it's particularly bad writing. It's just that Fraction's Punisher isn't someone I really care to read about.
Hulk and Power Pack - Only if you enjoy the Marvel Adventures series would I recommend this.
New Avengers - I'll read it, but the fact that Bendis has been jumping back and forth in time is really jarring to the reading. I wouldn't recommend it.
Marvel Zombies Dead Days - looks interesting. It might be worth picking this one up. At least you wouldn't have to worry about potentially adding another continuing series to your pull list.
Spidey/FF is definitely worth keeping on your list. Because even if every other single book you buy is utter shite, this book will leave you with a pleasant taste in your mouth.
Nobody else has mentioned it yet, but New X-Men's upcoming arc could be promising. Skottie Young's new art is really cute.

I'd go with New X-Men. This is a seriously overlooked book. I've enjoyed almost every issue and the characters are amazing. Last issue was a little tedious at points, but I guess that happens sometimes with a prologue issue. All I know is that there's going to be some Niko Hendrickson art in the issue and that's reason enough for ANYONE to be buying this book right now.
Plus, did I mention the return of Magik?

Me, I'll be getting the Criminal trade and the Ethernals HC, but if you go for single issues (which I'm assuming, otherwise this could turn out to be an expensive feature for you) I'd recommend DMZ (DMZ, DMZ, DMZ!!!) or Jack of Fables.
Blade of the Immortal from Dark Horse is good too but I think it's better in trades. Also, it's very late to join in if you've never read it.

The Criminal trade is highly recommended if you enjoy crime fiction. I'll be buying it myself!
If you already got the single issues, then I vote for Okko. It may look like a #3 of a 4-issue LS, but the series is ongoing in Europe, so there is gonna be much more than that in a few years' time. This is just the first act of the story!
Best,

I'm not sure I'd say that the "& Power Pack" books are the bset thing Marvel's putting out right now, but if someone made that argument, I wouldn't argue against it.
That's what you want. Hell wait, get the Spider-Man & Power Pack Digest for a freaking 7 bucks. It's more than worth it.
Barring that, give Nova #2 a shot. It should be fairly powerful if done well, and DnA are pretty competant.

@Greg: That first story arc is what hooked me on the series, and the TPB skips over the early fill-in issue (which was good in its own right) so you'll be well positioned to decide whether to add it to your pull list or not. Because it's Star Wars, it's something you could easily trade-wait, but you'd miss out on the one-shots that flesh out the setting and add another layer to the story.

I know you said you'd picked it up the last time (when I forgot to put my name in) but 2000AD #1534 has a double size first episode of the new story from Ian Edgington and Steve Yeowell. It's called Detonator X and could best be described as giant robots vs alien dinosaurs in the future with some nicely arch dialogue. All the other stories are on their penultimate episodes, but I still think you should go for it.
