I always liked the idea of there being a hidden "Big Bad" in Infinite Crisis, manipulating Alexander Luthor, a forgotten DC superstar... Bob Hope! "He wants everything back, the way it used to be!"

Actually, wherever I first read this idea, Jerry Lewis would be the villain, but I think Bob Hope would be funnier, and perhaps even legally doable since he's dead now. (In truth, probably not, given semi-recent laws protecting the likenesses of dead celebrities.)

If I'm remembering right, (and boy does it make me feel old) Bob Hope had kind of a running gag where he would pretend to be an snooty Ivy League type. He would babble on in an affected voice, saying things like, "I say, oh yes, Hahvahd hahvahd hahvahd..."

I'm guessing that's where the dog's name came from.

I may be totally wrong.

But I'm a dancing fool!

Bring back Go-Go Checks!

A while back, three or four years ago, I was covering a Bob Oksner appreciation panel for Jonah and when the subject of his Bob Hope run came up, both Oksner and the audience really lit up. I KNOW that if DC would get the stick out of its butt about paying royalties and licensing on some of these old strips that a Best-Of collection of some kind would sell; especially a smaller print run of something in the relatively cheap Showcase format. Even at the giant page count they currently use, it's so much cheaper to print in B/W as opposed to full-color that you could probably move two or three hundred units and meet the basic printing overhead.

I miss the Silver Age. You just don't get insane and wonderfully wacky stuff like this with such frequency in the modern era of comics.

Bill, thanks very much for all the linkage! I am honored!

Since I wrote that so long ago (2003...wow) I have actually acquired a few of those Bob Hopes and keep thinking I'll post a few pages, either at the Show or on the scans_daily LJ community. I'll have to keep that in mind.

And even though I do dread a Super-Hip revival in today's DCU (like it's really going to happen) I'd kinda like to see Grant Morrison or Pete Milligan write one, with Philip Bond, Cam Stewart or Mike Allred, even doing the art honors. And of course the Maniaks would have to make a cameo. It would be the ginchiest!

Thanks, Mark. Fixed!

And Da Fug, that's a brilliant idea. I will most certainly keep that in mind.

I'm enjoying the more random posts, Bill. Super-hip and Spidey in the same week! Sweet. But if you want to go back to theme weeks and such at some point, it might be cool to do "GUESS the theme week" to involve your audience a little bit.

(Also your link to Oddball comics thinks you're "Stealing bandwidth" even though you're not.)
