I like â€œFinn Family Moomintrollâ€ a lot, but it’s very light and fluffy compared to the later stories. “Tales from Moominvalley” hasn’t been mentioned; it consists of short stories, and I especially like the one about the Last Dragon In The World.

“Finn Family Moomintroll” is one of the earliest ones. The classics start with “Moominsummer Madness” and “Moominland Midwinter”, then on to the Moominpapa pair, and out with the Samuel Becketting gloom of “Moominvalley in November”.

Apodaca – Huh.

They should work together. I’m picturing in my mind something half-way between Woodsman Pete and Rusty Brown, and in my mind it’s the coolest thing ever.

(Would be cool if Ware learned a little from her, too. At least I’d like his stuff more if it was less little-people-doing-small-things and more… mythic, y’know? And if the jokes were punchier.)

I don’t know if it is possible to get hold of any full episodes. As I remember it it was kind of like an animated version of BONE.

Apodaca – Woodsman Pete was my favorite of the four things I talked about here. But in the absence of any interesting flaws or much cultural context to talk about, I just couldn’t come up with anything to say.
(I had a bunch of jokes about reviewers block, but it seemed a little ego-centric so I cut em.’)

I’ll definitely follow her work from here on out, though.

Lilli Carre is a friend of a friend and I’m definitely a fan. ‘Woodsman Pete’ has a great sense of humor to it, and reminds me a bit of Michael Kupperman’s stuff.

Regarding Moomin â€” the comics are decent, but the novels are absolutely brilliant, starting out as idyllic summer adventures and then turning darker and more melancholic. Although I donâ€™t like what little Iâ€™ve seen of the English translation, so you may want to learn Swedish first. No, really! Itâ€™s worth it just for the Moomin books.

I spend all afternoon trying to learn Swedish before giving up. But I tried, dammit!

I was actually wondering about the books. When I was doing my usual perfunctory research for this bit I kept hearing that the Moomin stories were sad and satiric… And I didn’t really see much of that kind of depth from this collection, good as it was.

(I put out an interlibrary loan request for the English translation of Finn Family Moomintroll. I hope you’re not too disappointed in me.)
