Sorry to resurrect this post, but I just picked up Dynamo 5 #1, 3 and 4, based on just general word of mouth, and I have to say that I'm really underwhelmed. While I love the concept, I find the writing in this comic to be almost insultingly bad. The exposition in the first few issues was really bland, and involved a lot of people explaining out loud what could have been told in much more exciting graphical sequences.

The origin story in particular was so abrupt ("ZAP - You have powaz"?) and the mirrored sequences with their families are soo predictable.

I read this blog avidly, so let me know if this title throws some major interesting twists and just improves in general. Until then, I'll be saving my hard-earned dollars for something readable.

Thanks for reviewing Unique and other non-big two titles though its clear from the feedback that no one gives a shit.

I agree the art is much better this month but I don't think the story is all that bad. In fact your review lowered m expectations and I ended up enjoying the book more. lol

Heck, one of my best friends owns “A Contract With God” but has never read a single Spirit story.

Heck, I own A Contract With God, Name Of The Game, Life On Another Planet and The Plot, yet I've never read a single Spirit story.
The art style looks quite different and y'know, just cause I like his Human dramas, doesn't mean I'll nessecarily like his superhero/crimefighter book.

As I recall, if you go waaaaaayyyyy back to Stan Lee's original X-Men it was actually stated that Bobby's ice form actually functions as a kind of armor. It used to be that he was harder to hurt when he was in his ice form rather than his regular human form. I suppose it also would have afforded a certain level of disguise as well.

If this still holds true than Bobby does not need to be in his ice form to use his powers heavily -- he only should be in his ice form if he's in the middle of a battle where he is in danger of coming to physical harm.

Bobby is one of the few Omega level mutants.

That means Marvel doesn't need to explain the phyiscal impossibilites of his abilities.

ICEMAN can control temperature variations and moisture in the air.

He need not be in ICY form to do so.
It just LOOKS cool when he is.

I would imagine that SOME amount of power or effort (and definitely moisture/temperature control) goes INTO making himself ICY, so if he performs a BIG feat, he may want to de-ice himself and send that extra power/effort/temp/moisture to the intended task.

Just snowballing* a concept.

*(minds outta the gutter, people.)

...how does Bobby create all that ice when he’s not iced up?

Turning into ice is simply one aspect of his abilities, not the whole shebang. Coating things in ice is a separate part of his mutation.

While I agree that this has been the best issue of The Spirit so far I do understand why Cooke has spent so much time establishing (or reestablishing) many of the original supporting cast -- simply because not everyone has read The Spirit Archives, or The Best of the Spirit. Heck, one of my best friends owns "A Contract With God" but has never read a single Spirit story.

Cooke just needed a little time to set up the base before he started building the pyramid.

ELEPHANTMEN and CRIMINAL in the same week... sweeet.

I often see people in blogs or on message boards complaining that DC and Marvel have become cynical and shitty and have stopped producing "pure" superhero comics. I often wonder why they don't just jump ship and pick up INVINCIBLE or DYNAMO 5 (and those are just two examples). Is familiarity with the characters really that important?

If you like superhero comics published from the 60's to the 80's and you wonder why DC and Marvel aren't doing anything that enjoyable lately, you should simply quit and find some Image comics. Spider-Man won't go back again.

Sorry, Jordan - I forgot who wrote Beyond! I'm waiting for the trade.

And John - I know both Callisto and Marrow are still alive, but Storm didn't know either one of them would be. Who knew Marrow had two hearts????

You liked Gutsville.

Huh.

I thought it was pretty, and all the bonus materials were cool but I had HUGE problems with the storytelling.
Too many characters introduced in too short a time, and the background information was given to us kind of haphazardly. Great concept, but this issue was fairly muddled.

I've been screaming about Ant-Man ever since te first issue dropped. I'm probably the only one (even in the Ant-Fan sub-group) who has LOVED every issue.

Perhaps I have no taste.

This series is so canceled, but I really hope they keep Eric O'Grady around, as he could be a fun character to follow. Perhaps in a "Loners" miniseries, or as a moral barometer for the Runaways, or maybe he can join The Great Lake "Whatevers" and appear in all their one shots. Or maybe Marvel should just bite the bullet, make it a MAX, and give all the pervy fan boys the cussin and boobies they wish they could see. The sky is the limit, I say!

1. Ant-Man is great.

2. Greg... You say MacDuffie was correcting Marvel's mistake of killing Gravity, but you're wrong. MacDuffie was the one who wrote that death, and it was his plan to bring him back all along.

I’ll point out that both Marrow and Callisto are still alive. So Storm’s only an attempted murderer.

Yeah, she even had an all girl three way with Callisto at the end of The Arena storyline in X-treme X-Men.

I'm surprised Antman doesn't sell - I thought Kirkman was big enough to have an inbuilt audience - and couple that with the inbuilt Marvel audience, that you'd have a successful book no matter what.
