I don't like to look these things up, but this appears to be dying out without anybody identifying the "who is it?" out loud, so I did a little research, lest it drive me crazy. It looks like the answer is Sgt. Rock's little brother: "Larry Rock, the Fighting Devil Dog".

Rock vs. Fury..

Nah. Can't call it. Rock is slightly tougher, but he also functions in a more realistic world. Fury's more of a cartoon character, with all the inherent advantages that grants.

Quick Kick and Doc died, I believe, because they had to have SOME popular characters die if people were going to pay attention to their mass slaughter.

Doc was the roughest, as, well, the dude was a freakin' MEDIC!

#109 is part two of a two-part story, but it all ties together to the longest (and bloodiest) battle in Joe history, which took place from, like, #106-114.

And yeah, I was wrong about Falcon. Luckily, Sneak Peek was on the same cover, so "Dead Joes" still fits. :)

The Joes who were killed in #109 were:

Doc, Crankcase, Heavymetal, Thunder, Breaker, Crazylegs and Quick Kick

Fury wins vs. Rock. He lost his eye when he caught a freakin' potato masher thrown at him, then tossing it back at the Nazi scum (and proceeded to catch the blast anyway when it detonated early), which suggests a lot of stones and, more importantly in a street fight, quick reflexes. True, Fury's cooler as a super-spy than a soldier, but this is the guy that thinks he can tell guys like Wolverine and the Thing what to do. He's crazy. I think those give him the edge.
Plus, in '44, did Fury still HAVE his eye?

they killed quick kick!?!?

where's an interrobang when you need one?

seriously, and doc too?

wtf?

i gave up on the title after issue 79 or 80 so i was not privy to this travesty, but i am morbidly curious to read issue 109. is it a multipart story or just a one and done issue?

Brian & Mike said:
"“Close enough, Andrew!

Specifically, they all feature Joes killed in the same issue (#109), the infamous “Let’s kill a bunch of Joes because, hey, it’s the 90s and soldiers die, right?” issue where seven Joes (who were being held as prisoners) were mercilessly killed off, including Doc, Quick Kick and Lt. Falcon.”

I don’t think that’s correct. I’m 99% sure Lt. Falcon survives that. Sneak-peak died, but in issue 113."

I stopped reading the Marvel series sometime around issue #75, so I missed out on the whole mass slaughter storyline. I remember the hype it received at the time though. Is Falcon dead? I noticed he hasn't been mentioned in the DD series at all (at least not that I can remember). If he is alive, it's odd he wouldn't be by his brother Flint after Lady Jaye's death.

My thought is that Fury wins. Because the only way these two guys would be fighting was if Rock was out of his mind with anger/grief, and Fury was trying to put him down to keep him from doing something he'd regret later. Which gives Fury the upper hand, because he'd have a cool head and be able to use his wits. It'd be a heckuva fight, though, because Rock ain't the type of guy to go down easy...I see it as the sort of thing that'd last a while, before Fury finally hit Rock with enough haymakers that his legs folded up. And when Rock wakes up, he's actually grateful that Fury did what needed to be done.

I actually come to the opposite conclusion as Hunter. In a street fight, Fury wins. For one thing, I believe Fury actually grew up "on the streets," getting into street fights and such, didn't he? Plus, Rock's attitude would be "Knock it off, war's over!"

I've always seen Fury as the kind of guy who "needs" to fight, and would (and did) seek out opportunities to keep shootin' bad guys. Rock, if he survived the war, would just go back to civilian life and be one of those guys who never talks about what he did in the war.

Oh, and Nick Fury is cool, but on a street fight Rock ALWAYS wins!

Howevr, he wouldn't beat up Fury, since he would never hurt a brother in arms. Just a couple of punches to sober Fury up.

On the other hand, it they were fighting on the field, with guns and tactics, Fury, a Special Forces soldier, would have the upper hand.

Best,
Hunter (Pedro Bouça)

Cover game:

Sgt. Rock Special #6:

Ironically, a reprint of the very same story. Johnson gets no respect!

I only recently got back into G.I. Joe via the Devil’s Due series, but I think the theme above is that all 3 covers feature DEAD Joe’s- Quick Kick, Doc, and Sneak Peek.
Close enough, Andrew!

cover theme game:

all 3 covers are about gi joe insertion into enemy territory. though i would say that bolivia (or whatever the country was called in #61)was not exactly enemy territory, but it was quote a war zone for the joes.

next guess, and i say guess is that a carnival/circus plays a big part of the story in each episode.

and what does it say about me that i know more about gi joe stories than superhero lore....

The obvious answer to "who is it?" is Sgt. Rock, but that's too obvious. And I haven't read any war comics (well, except for some current ones, like The Other Side and DMZ and Pride of Baghdad) so I don't know any of the characters Rock served with. But I'm guessing one of them had to have a mineral-like last name.

Here's a fun fact about GI Joe. This may be common knowledge, but I was never much into the show in my younger days, but here goes.

Destro was never a member of Cobra. He was an international arms dealer who just happened to hang out with Cobra. Plus, he totally had a thing with the Baroness. I mean, how cool is Destro, right?
